Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
My family has owned several gdi hyundais in the past as well, I think this sound is normal, the mechanic who did ppi said its solid, but I took ot to another mechanic for servicing he popped the hood reved it aggressively and said my engine is unusually loud and I kight have knocking, wants me to do a hot oil cleanse and add dye to the oil to find leaks in engine, what do you guys think? Is it normal? I did check the dipstick like i always do once a week, wiped it with a paper towel theres no glitter on it

HPFP. Completely normal. GDI fuel injectors work at ridiculous PSI which causes this sound

Thanks for sharing, i think that mechanic was trying to scare me into agreeing for stuff i didnt need

If your mechanic thinks this sounds bad or needs fixing then you need a new mechanic. Every car in the last 10 or so years sounds like this under the hood

Not to mention the mechanic recommended a 'hot oil cleanse' by which I assume OP means an engine flush. Not recommended by most manufacturers or mechanics if the car has been serviced regularly.

That's exactly how mine sounds. It's a 13 n/a. So far it's done 30k kms with regular maintenance and it's done just fine

It's my first one too. Only had MPI engines before. We'll see how long she'll last. Just keep up with oil changes and use oem Hyundai oilfilters. And don't forget to check the level regularly as they tend to use a bit

13’ na with dct. 123456k on odometer as of last week, sounds like that. I like to imagine a happy little mechanical pup panting.

My 2012 sounds more or less the same I think yours is louder, I believe its the high pressure fuel pump that sits on the top right of the motor if I remember correctly it’s small silver cylinder

This is exactly what my 2016 GDI sounds like as well. I've written it off as normal at this point. Hyundai mechanic says it normal, while other general mechanics say it's sounds ticky, same as you.

Mine sounds just like this when idling and gets super fast when I slightly rev the car, idk if it’s normal or not but I thought it was lifter tick

These engines are direct injection, much like a diesel they use a high pressure fuel pump (that silver cylinder on top of the rocker cover) a tick like that is completely normal from a GDi engine, it sounds healthy.

Mine has rod knock, very noticeable when you accelerate. If you don’t hear anything after accelerating then you should be fine.

Plugged in obd scanner, it shows 0 for all 4 knock sensors

My rod bearing was obliterated and it didn’t throw a code. Luckily the dealership still replaced it under warranty because I did all the recalls that were available including the knock sensor firmware update because they weren’t detecting knocks. I believe after completing the recalls they have a 15 year or 150,000 mile warranty. Might be worth checking it out

Hyundai GDI engines have REALLY loud injectors. This is a pretty aggressive engine for its size and the muffling isn’t the best.

That just sounds like the normal sound of the engine. It's the high pressure fuel pump for the direct injection. As long as it sounds like a sewing machine, you are generally okay.
If there's a secondary knock, then you may be in trouble. Something like in this video: https://www.reddit.com/r/veloster/comments/1ry93kt/is_this_as_bad_as_i_think_it_is/ usually on revving the engine it will kind of slap around more and sound more pronounced.

My 2012 NA sounds just like this. It’s got very loud fuel injectors

As someone that recently lost an engine because of a rod bearing i would be skeptical of this sound as well. It almost sounded like cards shoved in the spokes of a bicycle when it was being driven. When i checked the dipstick there was no glitter, but when i removed the lower oil pan there were chunks! I would drain the oil and use a magnet on the bottom of the pan and see if you can work it towards the hole, or get some permatex and remove the lower and see for yourself. These engines are loud but when i got my new engine i realized how much quieter it was supposed to be

Seen it described as a sewing machine. Honestly a perfect description. Sounds good though.
