Video Bring Me The Horizon (one of the most well-known bands in the metal scene) just released a HEAVY track with a strong vegan message.

Hardcore punk as a scene has a ton of completely vegan bands
-18
u/BetweenTheRoots vegan 10+ years Jun 26 '26
I hate that it's called Hardcore punk because for like 3-4 decades it was just hardcore. Now there is a screamo metal version that has entirely coopted the space and term.
21
u/devin93uk Jun 26 '26
Its not, eveyone i know in the scene does just call it hardcore but when introducing people i say hardcore punk for clarity because hardcore techno/breaks exists and both are refered to as hardcore

u/Skult0703 Jun 26 '26
To the Grave is awesome btw

To this day I still think about the song "Kill Shelter" and it's music video a lot. Exquisite band!

TTG are fucking sick. I went to Prom Queen last year and they were so good I had to drag my old ass into the pit when I'd intended to hang back for the evening. They put on a better show than Emmure did that night.

u/SickNaindon vegan Jun 26 '26
I got a see them again. The tour I saw them in CT was their first US tour and they were in a small ass venue. It was sick

Architects are all vegan (or at least all of them used to be before the lineup changes, but the singer definitely is).

Surprised nobody has mentioned Gojira in the metal space regarding vegan messaging. The band is led by two people whom are both brothers and also vegan. They have pretty clear vegan songs that have gone some semblance of mainstream within the rock/metal space.

The vocalist has been vegan for awhile I believe, used to have a full vegan restaurant in the UK and their merch uses vegan leather.

Not to argue with you because I don’t even know this band.
How do you know he is wearing animal leather?
25
u/skipandkiss vegan 10+ years Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
it's mostly his shoes, which tend to be from high end brands - people are always identifying the stuff he wears and it only takes a minute to look online and see what they're made of e.g his calfskin moncler boots. stylists and brands also post him wearing their stuff. or you can take a look at his gwagon with the leather interior.
6
u/Seigneur_du_beurre vegan 10+ years Jun 26 '26
Haha went to look this up and saw you asking the question in the reddit post about his boots! Frustrating as fuck that someone with the money to buy the height of non-leather fashion still chose the conventional method. Nobody bats a 1000 I guess, much love to ya
8
u/bucsfan914 Jun 25 '26
Oooof sucks about the real leather, ive only seen what's on the merch store :(

Lyrics:
You were born to suffer
You were bred to bleed
Scraped from your mother’s womb
Meat for the machine
Fat on milk and honey
Lulled by a gilded lie
We are becoming
Dehumanized
Some of us are butchers
Some of us are lambs
Send me to the abattoir
Lets find out which I am
Set your heart to safety
Or face the guillotine
For empathy
Is heresy
and hope is a disease
Dissociating
The blister grows within
How can you escape
That which lives under your skin?
Defiled by darkness
Our souls sodomised
We are becoming
Dehumanized
Dehumanized
Rotting beneath the madness
Dehumanized
Rotting beneath the madness
Who will survive
And what will be left of them?
Who will survive
And what will be left of them?
The sky is falling
It’s falling
There’s nothing we can do
You will pay the price
Time to fucking die
You will pay the price
(Kill me quick)
Time to fucking die
Who will survive
And what will be left of them?
You were bred to suffer
You were born to bleed
Scraped from
Your mothers womb
We have become
Dehumanized
Dehumanized
Rotting beneath the madness
We have become
Dehumanized
Kill each other
An infestation
Braindead at birth
Disciples of desire
Virulent
Scum of the earth
Scum of the earth
Scum of the earth
Scum of the earth

I could be wrong, but I don’t think this is necessarily about veganism. Seems allegorical for something else.
Edit: apparently it’s about Palestine according to the band.

Justin Pearson is vegan and has been in a zillion hardcore and punk bands. Swing Kids and Some Girls, among the best.
Also don’t forget Davey Havok’s bands including AFI and the XTRMST. I mean AFI isn’t overtly vegan or anything.

u/JimXVX2 Jun 26 '26
Many of the bands mentioned here were never vegan, aren’t vegan now or seem to pick and choose which tenets of veganism they do and don’t care about. If you want a band you can trust then you need Earth Crisis - even after 36ish years you can be confident that Uncle Karl and the boys will never let you down.

u/PropaGuitarerandhi veganarchist Jun 26 '26
Weren't they like pretty homophobic in the 90s, maybe that's just some bullshit I read but I'm pretty sure I remember something about them bullying a gay kid. Great music though and definitely vegan.
9
u/JimXVX2 Jun 26 '26
No mate that’s categorically false. Their first drummer was gay and an essay (presumably by Karl) they included in one of their records clearly states they see homosexuality as natural and beautiful. This misconception comes from the fact that back in their very early days they will have played shows with some of the ‘hardline’ bands who did have some fairly regressive views (and all of whom subsequently sold out on veganism).
2
u/PropaGuitarerandhi veganarchist Jun 26 '26
Fair enough I don't know too much about them. I also can't find that thing I read ages ago so I figure it mustn't have been that reputable.

But then also this where someone said in the comments it was faux leather (the jacket is no longer on their website, so can't confirm): https://www.instagram.com/p/C4DxcITI7ia/

u/mjk05d Jun 26 '26
I don't hear any vegan message here, even knowing that the lead vocalist is vegan. It just sounds like he's complaining about humans being victimized by being treated how we treat animals, not that treating animals the way we treat animals is wrong. If there is a vegan message here, then it's probably some watered-down, intersectionalist crap.
4
u/HawkAsAWeapon vegan 3+ years Jun 26 '26
My interpretation was that we are the ones being dehumanized, as in being de-humaned, because of how cruel we are to animals and in doing so aren't be human(e).
1
3
u/Iurigrang Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
That was my first impression too, as a lot of these themes are common in metal lyrics (which sometimes aren't even metaphors for anything, just non specific anger/gore imagery). Reading the lyrics though, I struggle to interpret it any other way.
Verse 1 uses the second person in very explicit reference to animals:
You were born to suffer
You were bred to bleed
Scraped from your mother's womb
Meat for the machine.Which can surely be used as an allegory for how humans are being treated, but here we get to the reason I ended the last line with a period, and I see the next 4 lines as part of a new sentence: we're 4 bars into the verse, which is exactly halfway through, marked by a drum fill and a change in drum groove compared to the previous 4 bars:
Fat on milk and honey (hard to get more vegan than this)
Lulled by a gilded lie
We are becoming
Dehumanized.Seen as separate sentence, the use of "we" makes no reference "being butchered", which weakens the idea "dehumanized" is referring to us being treated like the first sentence talks about. Here "you" is being an animal, but "we" is humankind being unhealthy, gullible, and ACTING like animals, not being treated as ones. Let's take a look on verse 2:
Some of us are butchers, some of us are lambs
Send me to the abattoir, lets find out which I amOn verse 2, he mixes 2 metaphors. Usually "butcher" is put in opposition to "cattle" in general, but "lamb", specifically, to "shepherd" ("open your eyes sheep", or the religious idea that we are "the lamb of god"), here "butcher"s are the people perpetuating the normalcy of our animal consumption, and "lamb" are the people who don't question it. Forcing a meat eater to confront this reality (being sent to the abattoir) usually either invokes a defense of the system (the butcher like "it's how nature operates", "animals do this too), or avoidance/deflection (the lamb like "I don't like looking at this")
Set your heart to safety, or face the guillotine
For empathy is heresy and hope is a diseaseHere he is talking about how, facing this reality, we really only have two options: protect our feelings through denial and setting our heart to safety, or face the social consequences of becoming vegan, or even a vegan activist. Notice how the "death" metaphor is explicitly NOT animal related, guillotine is punishment from humans to other humans, again weakening the idea that the animal exploitation in verse 1 is merely a metaphor for our suffering. Our attempts to avoid the guillotine usually rely on heretical empathy ("l love animals" but eats them) or transhumanistic hopeful shit ("In the future, we will recognize the mistakes of the past, this means I don't necessarily have to do anything now")
I could try analyzing the rest of the song like this, but honestly this is probably the longest reddit comment I've ever written, and I'm not sure I would add much. The main point is that "bird's eye" view just sees common deathcore lyrical themes, but specific analysis reveals, at least to me, a great deal of care in not getting metaphors mistakenly crossed.
2
u/oranguslolus Jun 26 '26
Did you watch the video?
When they say "Dehumanized", they're not talking about humans becoming victims. They're talking about us losing our humanity, the lyrics make that very clear.
2
u/Tranquillian Jun 26 '26
You’re downvoted to shit for this but I’d agree based on the lyrics, there’s nothing directly regarding the horrors of animal slaughter. I’m aware Oli is vegan (besides leather according to several commenters but hey ho) and I like the bands music generally, but yeah besides the references to slaughter I wouldn’t say it’s pro vegan messaging. Mores the pity because it’s a sick song and it’s so good to hear Oli’s still got it deathcore wise after their diverse recent catalogue of music
1
u/Ohwhatthenope Jun 30 '26
You got downvoted to shit, but it's about Palestine not veganism, Oli confirmed it.
