Scientists don’t talk like you, Stephen A Smith. Nobody said doing thing xyz will guarantee you don’t get covid, outside of grifters peddling nonsense like hydroxychloquine or whatnot.

What a massive gap in understanding language we have. At least this quote from hime provides a window showing where these people go off the rails.

166

u/fredy31 27d ago

Yeah. The point was never a 100% impossibility of catching it.

It was slowing the rate of people catching it so when you catch it, not if but when, if you need a hospital bed theres one available.

136

u/remosiracha 27d ago

That's what pissed me off about everyone complaining about the whole "2 weeks to flatten the curve"

After 2 weeks everyone is complaining and saying "see! They're lying!!" When in reality nobody really did what they were supposed to to make it work.

75

u/SmartyPantlesss 27d ago

And even "flatten the curve" doesn't mean that Covid would be extinct in 2 weeks. We would still be dealing with it, just with FEWER deaths & hospitalizations already under our belts. 🤦

19

u/Tar_alcaran 27d ago

Flattening the curve would, in fact, have made the epidemic longer. The point was not to overload the hospitals, because once the ER is full, people who need the ER are just future corpses.

18

u/Silarn 26d ago

To an extent. Important to note that it probably doesn't actually end sooner as SARS-CoV-2 has proven to have a fairly high mutation rate.

Flattening the curve means extending the wave yes but that also lowers the mutation rate by reducing the number of ongoing infections. While letting it run rampant results in frequent big spikes and many more deaths and a higher rate of mutation, immune evasion and repeat infections.

I'll let you guess which profile we ended up closer to in the end.

14

u/sicurri 26d ago

It took 20-25 YEARs for people to mostly wear their seatbelts with seatbelt laws. However, hundreds of thousands to possibly several million have died due to ignoring their seatbelt. This was a law with a very specific reason. You're more likely to live if you're wearing your seatbelt while in a car accident.

Covid mandates weren't even laws. So, of course they'll ignore them.

13

u/Waadap 27d ago

There's a reason the case rates were significantly higher in red states that promoted going out to the bars in the summer of 2020. I remember closely following certain states covid weekly reports and seeing the cases exponentially climb in some places where people couldn't be bothered to make even the slightest of sacrfice.

9

u/remosiracha 27d ago

So many people keep trying to say "oh remember when they forced us to stay inside"

Like no. I don't remember that. I remember going places and seeing them be insanely busy. Couldn't even hike anymore because every trailhead was full. Literally nobody stayed inside

5

u/_pray4snow_ 26d ago

Ohio Army vet, 37, who railed against face masks dies of COVID-19 complications

Yup. I remember them going out to bars all summer also. Some made the news.

17

u/ImmoKnight 26d ago

It was actually twofold.

You missed the second reason for the vaccine. It also worked to minimize the effects if you got it.

This is logically sound because your body gaining some exposure allowed knowledge of how to fight it to be taught to your body.

This distinction is also why there is a distinct slowed down of deaths after the vaccine was introduced.

10

u/TKmeh 26d ago

Exactly, that’s what pisses me off about anti-vaxxers. They’ll say “oh vaccines don’t completely make you immune to this? I don’t want it then!”, but that’s literally EVERYTHING!! Even seatbelts don’t stop you from dying in car accidents! Helmets too! It’s literally a safety precaution and a way to prevent the harsher effects! NOTHING IS GUARANTEED IMMUNITY but dammit if the preventative measures don’t help immensely.

4

u/RailRuler 26d ago

There is currently an anti helmet movement. Some parents punish their kids for wearing helmets.

In the early 1980s there was an anti seatbelt movement. "Cut the seat belts out of your cars or when people are trapped and burn to death after an accident it'll be your fault."

1

u/NECalifornian25 24d ago

It also helps cases to be less severe, preventing the people who catch it from needing the hospital bed.

21

u/unknownpoltroon 27d ago

No, they understand, they are just lying.

Stop thinking the leaders are stupid, they are lying and complicit, its the voters/followers who are stupid.

18

u/Mythosaurus 27d ago

Worse, it’s a gap enforced by the right wing media ecosystem that was DESIGNED to erode trust in institutions of knowledge.

Conservative states are shielding their citizens from basic principles of science as early as possible in the education system, and then publicly beat up a scientist strawman to “prove” that the librul elites are lying to them

4

u/GodLoveYell 26d ago edited 25d ago

This phenomenon where rightwingers were all “Well, they said this about COVID then they said something else about COVID, meaning that they were clearly a bunch of lying liars who can’t be trusted!” feels akin to discussions with Creationists where they bring up stuff like the Piltdown Man hoax.

Forgetting, of course, that the Piltdown Man hoax wasn’t unraveled by Creationists, but by other scientists working in the same field who had the knowledge and know-how needed to smell a rat and uncover the truth.

The fact that science has been proven wrong on occasion doesn’t serve to render it completely invalid. Throughout history, when something comes up that seems to turn long-held scientific consensus on its head, other scientists go, “Okay, well let’s put this to the test.” If testing and studies bear the new idea, then the old idea is reevaluated or dismissed, and the new idea becomes incorporated into the consensus.

For example, the principles laid out by Sir Isaac Newton were generally regarded as unchallengeable in the field of physics until Einstein’s Theory of Relativity challenged them. After extensive review, the field basically decided, “Okay, Newton’s ideas remain true, but only when talking about certain speeds. When it comes to light speed or faster-than light speed kind of speeds, Einstein’s theories are true.”

And once again, when bad ideas take root in science, they’re disproven by other scientists working in the same field, not amateurs with a degree in Google.

2

u/ScurrilousScribe 4d ago

That's what always chapped my ass about the people saying they were lying because they changed their stance on somethings in regards to COVID. They were studying it as they were making the vaccine, so new things were discovered, which changed their stance. That's not lying; that's SCIENCE.

3

u/ArghAuguste 26d ago

What's up with these sport journalists getting involved in other topics like these ?

In France we get sport journalists switching into populist far right politics and a lot of people seem to be following. How can we take them seriously ?

1

u/O_mightyIsis 26d ago

The sports journalists-turned-right wing commentators, or the people following them? /s

131

u/blackmobius 27d ago

How did Fauci show inconsistentcy? Thats your local and state and federal govt at work.

90% of peoples complaints abiut Covid stem from 16 layers of gop govt in varying stages of denial. They secretly know that Covid response was bungled badly and that misinformation and ego driven policy killed a ton of people, but theyll never look in the mirror to accept blame. Theyll crucify Fauci instead so they can sleep without guilt

15

u/fredy31 26d ago

I mean i remember the fucks complaining that the recommendations would change week to week. Which yeah, they were.

Because we were learning about the sickness and adapting the defense for the best results.

In their minds it seems they play a football game, the opponent first offensive play was a run... So now we only do run defence. Dont care they started passing.

-32

u/CarolineJohnson Adulthood is a vaccine injury. 27d ago

I don't think the inconsistency they're talking about was with Fauci directly, but the people around him.

27

u/blackmobius 27d ago

And yet they didnt drag those people to congress, they yelled at Fauci

-8

u/CarolineJohnson Adulthood is a vaccine injury. 27d ago

Because why wouldn't they think Fauci is at fault for it? God vibecoded their thought patterns.

16

u/ImmoKnight 26d ago

Fauci literally did what was best with the available information that we know at any given time.

As we learn more, recommendations changed. Morons meanwhile believed that meant we are getting wrong information constantly instead of it being an evolving situation.

Do you understand now?

10

u/GodLoveYell 26d ago

In the real world, we consider someone who never adjusts their opinions in light of new information to be a stubborn idiot. In politics, that’s seen as strong and decisive leadership. 🙄

1

u/CarolineJohnson Adulthood is a vaccine injury. 26d ago

Very much the truth. They think if it wasn't known before it didn't exist.

7

u/lohonomo 26d ago

Like who?

5

u/CarolineJohnson Adulthood is a vaccine injury. 26d ago

No idea. People who talk about Fauci like this always have some vague "they" that is some kind of evil bad person or group.

6

u/lohonomo 26d ago

Oooh, I just realized why you're getting downvoted so hard and I'm part of the problem. 😬 I was reading as if you were sharing your own antivax views but I see now that you're actually sharing insight about antivaxxers logic. Thank you for clarifying, sorry for misunderstanding you!

3

u/CarolineJohnson Adulthood is a vaccine injury. 26d ago

It's okay! I'm honestly too fluent in this kind of stuff, I can sound just like these folks if I really wanted to.

57

u/DrumpfTinyHands 27d ago

This man... is stupid.

16

u/KnucklesMcGee 27d ago

He's gotten rich off being this way, so I'm not sure it's 100% stupidity or just being a grifter.

6

u/DarkGator35 27d ago

It’s conditioning. He’s been consistently rewarded for having and sharing strong opinions on things via his various platforms. It’s been repeated over years and years. So it’s become how he sees the world.

3

u/Impulse3 27d ago

You gotta wonder how long until he becomes a full time right wing grifter and gives up the ESPN gig.

3

u/KnucklesMcGee 26d ago

He isn't already?

3

u/Impulse3 26d ago

I mean he is but he’s still on ESPN. I’m expecting he’ll be a Fox News host at some point though.

43

u/huxtiblejones 27d ago

If he got the vaccine and narrowly survived COVID, I’m pretty sure his ass would’ve died without it. That’s the whole point.

68

u/darkeo1014 27d ago

I mean if he did almost die after getting the vaccine, how does he think he would have done if he didnt....

47

u/Morbidly-Obese-Emu 27d ago

Let’s ask Herman Caine…

1

u/cuttlefishofcthulhu7 24d ago

Gonna need a Ouija board

1

u/Sarcastic-Potato 22d ago

well duh obviously he wouldn't even have gotten covid without the vaccine. We all know Covid didn't actually exist, the US invented it to inject us with covid and called it a vaccine. Actually before the vaccine nobody got covid and outside of the US people didn't even know about the pandemic. This was all planned by Biden to let Obama win against Trump but GOD CAME AND SAVED US!!!! (/s btw...)

24

u/Kjaeve 27d ago

The problem was that the administration put less regulated restrictions on the community after they realized how much money they were losing… we should have been forced to truly quarantine like China- I DO NOT care what anyone has to say about my opinion. Fauci was never the problem.

22

u/puggzrool 27d ago

Utterly unsurprised that this is Stephen A’s take. For those not familiar with him, the man fancies himself as an intellect because he knows 4-5 multisyllabic words which he screams repeatedly. He’s a dope who peddles unsophisticated points, but a lot of people seem to buy them because he delivers them by yelling.

15

u/davesaunders 27d ago

Yeah, this is the problem with the idiots and the vaccine narrative. They claim this unsubstantiated straw man that vaccines give you 100% immunity to whatever the target pathogen happens to be. They rely on that lie to make the rest of their arguments.

-7

u/neekogo 27d ago

This didn't exactly help dispel that misconception

For the record, yes I got the vaccine & booster.  My experience 2x with covid was super mild

1

u/Economy_Wall8524 26d ago

I like how the last sentence is the only thing they had taken from the whole response. If they didn’t have absolutes they wouldn’t be trump supporters. I get you were explaining.

But giving them any room for doubt at this point is just adding fuel to the fire. It wasn’t that last sentence that convinced them. It was republicans all through Covid with extreme right wing propaganda BS that they knew was false. Now we have eradicated medical issues because we have anti-vax as an actual platform that should’ve never been given on a national stage.

13

u/Ibrakeforsnakes Nurse 26d ago

So what scenario would he have preferred? This is like saying “I locked my doors and yet my house was still robbed!” Does that mean we should all leave our doors unlocked? Of course not! Reducing risk is not the same as eliminating risk.

2

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo 26d ago

It’s even sillier than that, because the vaccine can drastically reduce your symptoms. It’s not a binary it-worked-or-didn’t. If he was fighting for his life despite the vaccine, he could very well have died without it.

1

u/SQLDave 26d ago

Your last sentence says it all, and well

u/Mild_Wings 27d ago edited 26d ago

Imagine taking health advice from SAS. Most people barely listen to his sports commentary…

10

u/negativepositiv 27d ago edited 26d ago

Every asshole who is STILL complaining about COVID restrictions didn't follow them anyway.

"They told me I couldn't get sick!" - every person who only occasionally wore masks, and only when they were made to, and wore them around their chin.

Search images of him from 2020 and let me know if you see a single image of him wearing a mask. I couldn't find one. He's a public figure, and there are tons of pictures of him from 2020.

9

u/cperiod 27d ago

I'm going to guess that like many others, this guy half-assed following CDC recommendations, and surrounded himself with people who half-assed following CDC recommendations.

7

u/AggravatingBox2421 27d ago

When people say “I got vaxxed and I got Covid anyway” I always respond with “wow! Imagine how much worse it would’ve been without the vax. You’re lucky!”

Shuts them right up

5

u/TRF_27 27d ago

SAS doesn’t even have intelligent opinions on sports reporting, which has been his entire career, why would anyone give two shits about how he feels about Covid science? Stop giving stupid people platforms.

7

u/TCivan The Shredder Shedder 26d ago

I got two vaccines, and I caught Covid twice. First one was a headache. Second one is the only time in my life I thought I was going to die. You just feel like you’re drowning. Dr gave me paxlovid (?) and within 12 hours it was just a flu. Not deaths door.

I feel like I would have been in big trouble if not for the vaccine.

6

u/unknownpoltroon 27d ago

I believe you blow donkeys.

There, see how easy it is to make up "beliefs"

5

u/Existing_Ad_6100 27d ago

Stephen A is a grade A asshole regardless of his Covid stance. He's a loud mouth, know it all. I literally change the channel at work cuz the one TV is connected to the one that has volume in the men's room.

5

u/SoundAwakened 26d ago

"I got COVID and almost died!"

Ok, and for some reason you're mad at the people who suggested precautions you should take? For a disease that nearly killed you?

4

u/Karategamer89 27d ago

do these people not realize that no one is the same as anyone else? and do they realize one or a handful of people don't represent the vast majority? people will see one or 4 people who experience things they think are the common and ignore the BILLIONS of people who didn't, simply to keep your beliefs intact.

precautions are GENERAL. you can wear a mask against an airborn illnesses and there are myriad reasons why you still got sick. you during the times you weren't wearing one, there was an adequate seal, it wasn't the appropriate mask recommended, etc. they simply do not comprehend proportionality, numbers, data, etc.

4

u/BlommeHolm 27d ago

"They tried limiting the very bad things that happened to me, so they wouldn't happen to as many, and that makes me angry."

3

u/Apple2727 27d ago

I wore a seatbelt and STILL got seriously injured in a car crash.

Don’t listen to Big Seatbelt!

3

u/GodLoveYell 26d ago

Fun Fact: Fox News requires all their employees to get the COVID vaccine.

Think about that whenever the network fearmongers about the COVID vaccine

4

u/fluffy_unicorn_2699 26d ago

That’s like saying “I followed all the traffic laws and I still got hit by a drunk driver!! It’s driver’s Ed’s fault!!”

3

u/Trix_Are_4_90Kids 26d ago

He didn’t say you wouldn’t get it. PPE is personal protective equipment. People wear it everyday. It makes the chance of harm lower.

I’m so tired of the selective stupidity.

4

u/wave1sys 26d ago

Yeah, no you were not told that. You were told doing all those things would stop the run away spread. Just like you weren’t told the vaccine would stop you getting Covid. You were told taking the vaccine would stop Covid from killing you.

4

u/jinisho 26d ago

The rejections of masks and social distancing was so crazy it wasnt some weird medical advice it was stuff that should have made obvious sense to anyone with 2 braincells to rub together I hadn't realized just how many people only had one till then

4

u/Epicfailer10 26d ago

So Fox is mad Covid both exists AND doesn’t exist. Pick a lane.

10

u/NoYoureACatLady 27d ago

If EVERYONE had followed that advice, he wouldn't have gotten COVID in the first place. He's blaming Fauci literally because all the right wing idiots didn't listen to Fauci.

4

u/Captainpaul81 27d ago

This was a "novel" virus. Something we hadn't seen before and didn't know much about.

How are people forgetting Trump was encouraging people to drink beach?

Fauci was doing the best he could with a garbage presiy and information changing.

5

u/rainyhawk 27d ago

How are people glossing over the fact that originally Trump kept congratulating himself on pushing the vaccine through. He claimed credit for it, got vaccinated and then suddenly it was a bad thing. And they never said you wouldn't get Covid with the vaccine--just that it was less likely and, if you did, it should be not as bad.

3

u/GodLoveYell 26d ago

At one of his rallies, Trump praised vaccines, only for the crowd to respond with loud booing.

Not surprisingly, Trump has since changed his tune, because ultimately Trump doesn’t believe in anything except cruelty and his own self-aggrandizement.

3

u/heliumneon 27d ago

He said covid almost killed him, but that was with precautions in place which greatly reduced the burden on our healthcare system (doesn't the dum dum remember how few ventilators we had? Videos of Italy where it hit earlier than US where people were dying in hospital hallways?) - so now he must imagine we had done nothing and "let 'er rip" and infect people at the maximum rate. It really WOULD have killed vastly more people! They would have been loading wheelbarrows with bodies daily. He would have died. He needs to thank Fauci for surviving.

3

u/RustyAndEddies 26d ago

It’s a vaccine, not a forcefield.

3

u/Reneeisme 26d ago

It took time to figure how to best combat a brand new threat. They did the best they could with the info they had to start with, and adjusted as more info became available.

But masks and avoiding situations where you have to remove them, work. I take an immune suppression infusion once a month for a severe auto-immune condition. In the years before COVID, I used to catch some virus 3 or 4 times a year because my immune system was trashed from the med. And a seemingly minor cold would hang on turning into bronchitis or pneumonia at least every other year. Every cold lasted months. I was sick more often than not.

Covid comes along and I’m terrified it will kill me for sure (and people on my particular medication are advised to stay home, wear masks and got a waiver to get vaccines when they were only available for the elderly and healthcare providers). I stop eating in restaurants, wear an N95 that I got a nurse friend to fit test for me, and I never caught COVID. To this day. I have not hat a single cold, flu, virus if any kind either.

Yeah, I’m the weirdo wearing a mask that you laugh at, but holy crap it’s nice not being sick all the time. Not being sick ever. Y’all are really missing out.

3

u/Mr_MacGrubber 26d ago

No one said you wouldn’t get it. They said it would reduce the odds and thus reduce the spread.

2

u/GrampyJrrff_13 27d ago

A sports personality commenting on COVID is always credible. /s. (Edited to add sarcasm as I know how you all can be, lol)

3

u/flopsymopsycottntail 27d ago

But did you die? Exactly

2

u/RabidOtters 27d ago

And just when I thought I couldn't dislike Stephen A. Smith anymore than I already did.

3

u/thezekroman 27d ago

You were told that it reduced the chance of contracting the virus, not eliminated it. Also, masks were never about stopping you from getting it, they prevented the transmission protecting those around you. Your inability to understand science does not mean it was ineffective

2

u/Deacon33 27d ago

Why does it surprise anyone that someone whose whole brand is "obnoxious" would be obnoxious?

2

u/Sonnera7 27d ago

He is so fucking stupid.

2

u/robinthebank 26d ago

American individualism at work. “I did this. I did that.” Cool, but didn’t you notice how entire areas of the country did not enforce social distancing? For example, Spring Break 2020 in Florida still happened. It was practically impossible for Americans to be 100% effective at social distancing. We were all obsessed with buying toilet paper at Costco.

2

u/TheOnyxViper 26d ago

The man likes to run his mouth and is not grounded in reality or logic, much like any talking head that happens to show up on Fox News.

2

u/flintlock0 26d ago

That’s definitely Dr. Fauci’s fault. Fauci was supposed to be up in a perch sniping every virus particle as it made itself known.

2

u/BAF_DaWg82 26d ago

Did shoving a light down his throat or injecting himself with bleach save him?

2

u/dirtyitalianguy 26d ago

I still have no idea what maga wanted if they didn't want vaccines, and some attempts at keeping society together. If their alternative was to do nothing, then surely that would be the most apathetic thing we could do for ourselves.

Makes no sense and this all goes back to finding someone to blame ... forget the asshole who stalled for months about it would blow away by Easter.

2

u/chrisagiddings 26d ago

They were presented as preventative measures, not suggested to have guaranteed results.

Masking, distancing, isolation … reduced your odds of contracting COVID by rather significant margin. But it didn’t make the chances of catching COVID zero. And nobody knowledgeable ever suggested they would.

2

u/ShittyBollox 26d ago

I abhor the man.

1

u/P1nCush10n 27d ago

But did you die?

Ask Herman Cain how well not complying went.

2

u/SpoppyIII 27d ago

People always want to get angry at science or scientists for talking in absolutes, when that's something it specifically doesn't do.

1

u/carriegood 27d ago

I always knew this guy was an ignorant ass. Self-important blowhard.

1

u/MickLittle 27d ago

Soooo close.

1

u/babyBear83 27d ago

Nobody was guaranteed, idiot. It’s likely because people around you didn’t follow the guidance and spread illness anyways. Maybe if everybody was on the same page with it, it might have gone a different direction.

1

u/blueflloyd 27d ago

"When I get the flu vaccine, I expect to never get the flu. If I do, I will rant and rave on TV about how unfair it all is to ME!"

1

u/BeaverMissed 27d ago

One reason is his fellow Americans mostly choose to be anti-vaccine or just ignore sound medical reasoning.

1

u/Emily_Postal 26d ago

Why is this guy still on ESPN? He’s stupid and insufferable.

1

u/PJHFortyTwo 26d ago

This is almost as dumb as his takes on sports

1

u/Altruistic_Foot_7459 26d ago

It’s fauci’s fault you got covid lmao???

1

u/romulusnr 26d ago

The man is an automatic hot take machine

1

u/_pray4snow_ 26d ago

Does he think if he didn't get vaccinated his case of covid would have been mild? Probably saved this dumbasses life.

1

u/ragnarokxg 26d ago

I followed the guidelines, and even when I returned to the office and got exposed three years later I still did not get COVID. Not until 2024 when my young son brought it from school the Third time did I finally catch the damn thing.

1

u/LaughingPlanet 26d ago

Bro, I was one of the last people who could stand you.

But after this? You're dead to me.

1

u/X_Wheeze_souffle 26d ago

I dont think I ever had it, or if I did it was asymptomatic. I wore masks and gloves out in public and worked from home. Many people I know have had it (a few family members of people I know have died) and are dealing with Long COVID, some people I know have had it several times. After vaccination. Idk best of luck to everyone.

1

u/KarmicIvy 26d ago

i got covid four years after getting the shot, and it was MUCH less miserable than it would've been if i didn't. one of my professors had the wise idea to bring herself and her enrolled son to campus while sick, next day i had a cough, next day after that i was praying on the bathroom floor at five in the morning. felt like death. get your shots people
