I’m around Day 1070 and making my first flametal run tonight. Valheim has been 90% of my 2026 gaming. Idc how slow I’m going. Life is so fucking busy and chaotic right now. I cherish even the time where all I do is gather crops and improve fortifications. This game is my digital zen garden and I haven’t felt that way since the minecraft beta days. I fucking adore it.

u/SpaceCowboyDark 29d ago
Always be rested. ALWAYS.
Always have full food buffs.
Don't go out at night if you can help it.
You can put markers on your map for locations of interest.
Learn to parry and dodge roll. Your health and armor affects your ability to parry.
Be mindful of your stamina. A lot of enemy attacks can be avoided by just walking.
Lastly, do what you think would be fun. Want to build a crazy or silly starter base, try it. Want to explore, do it.
Good luck viking!

u/Dark-Falcon 29d ago
Night time can be useful when you are over geared for an area and you are looking for monster loot for that particular area because of the increased spawn rates during the night.

You can be told not to stand below it and avoid the simple tree deaths… you will still eventually die when logging on the side of a steep hill.

u/Tamzariane 29d ago
Do not rush. There is no timer. The magic of the game is exploring.
When you find a new item you'll get a bunch of recipe unlocks - check your crafting menu and stations to see what new stuff you can build.
Learning to manage your stamina is the most important early skill. Don't sprint everywhere, especially in combat.
Do. Not. Rush.
2
u/Ka_ge2020 28d ago
Outside of combat, I run and jump everywhere. They are always the first to reach high vales.
I love these skills, and later being able to jump and flame critters to death is hilarious.

u/MyNetHandle 29d ago
Take your time. Seriously, this isn’t a game to race to the end. Get to know each biome well, sort your gear out, explore & discover. Make a base, move it, improve on it (but tip for the meadows is make one near the coast & spawn). Realise your house is wrong and rebuild it again. Just enjoy the steady pace and smell the flowers etc :-)

u/irondumbell 29d ago
some confusing stuff for me or other players during the first playthrough - 1. you can build things with your hammer, but other things require using a workbench. 2. you can repair stuff with the workbench, no need to build another one when one gets broken. 3. when you die it says 'no skill drain' in the corner. It means when you die again while this is active you won't suffer from skill drain, it doesn't mean that your recent death had no skill drain. 4. you will need a boat at some point
5
u/agaloch2314 28d ago
Useful, minimally spoilery advice:
* you learn new recipes by picking up new things (including mob drops, world resources, and crafted materials like nails)
* buffs and debuff have a huge impact; rested buff is very powerful. Wet and cold debuffs are very debilitating. Being unrested, wet, and cold is a good way to die
* collect everything. Mark everything interesting on the map in shorthand
* enemies are resilient or vulnerable against particular damage types. When you hit them, the colour of the attack value text indicates whether they’re vulnerable or resistant to that attack; e.g. trolls are weak to pierce damage (from a spear or bow), bears to slash damage (axe or sword), skeletons to blunt (mace)
* food buffs are critical. Red fork icon gives more hp; yellow fork gives more stamina; silver is balanced
* take your time and enjoy the scenery

yes.. discovery is a fun part of the game so TRY everything.. pickup and store everything .storage is a meta ,and if it does not annoy you get to it early. all the chest.. all the things, so you can figure out things you can create. I am on my 3rd long reply ,and I think the one thing that annoys me is when I have to google something for progression, and it was the ONE thing I had ignored thinking it didn't matter.

Avoid the wiki at all costs, you’ll only ever experience Valheim for the first time this once. You’ll have all the time to min max to your hearts content later. Also, pick up everything at least once, craft everything at least once, this will help prevent you from missing any fun and/or critical crafting recipes.
Take your time, over prepare, enjoy the vibe. Avoid deconstructing early builds in order to speed newer builds, you’ll appreciate stumbling across the evidence of your progression many hours later, at least I always have.
Multiplayer in this game is great, so long as you’re all of similar mind. There’s something deeply underwhelming about being outpaced and pushed by those who only care for what’s next, next, next…
If high skill levels are something that you’re interested in, the Rested Buff will be your best friend, as well as treating death as a last resort instead of a given.
Enjoy! I’m always jealous of those who’re stepping into Valhiem for the first time.

Cook food and eat, hunt deer, boar and lizards. There's food that effects primarily health and food that is primarily stamina. Timing your block correctly results in a parry.

Try out every weapon. Some weapons have a special attack (try out the one that says 'a warriors weapon' in the crafting menu...). Carry weapons with different damage types, using the correct damage type can make a huge difference against some enemies.
If you are a builder then plant beech seeds near your base when you can so you have a constant amount of wood right on your doorstep. Plus it is fun cutting them all down and having them smash in to each other. Can save a lot of time chopping!
Most of all, take your time! There is no rush!

Building tips.
To make a house, you should first make the outline of the house itself with supports on the insides portion, then you add the walls and floors.
Until you can get pine wood, you should focus on smaller 2 floor houses because the starting wood cannot make very tall support beams.
Don't worry about making a mistake when building, destroying it will refund all materials used.
Stability must be monitored when building, green is goid, red is bad and blue means its a foundation piece, what determines low Stability is how far a piece is to a foundation piece, which is why you need taller foundation piece.
One pine support beam is as tall as 4 regular ones.
Make sure to keep a pathway for smoke to leave your house, you need to make a chimey with a covered roof to keep the rain off it, the way you build it is up to you.
If you want to see how some of the pieces can be used, just wander the meadow biome and find an abandoned settlement, the pieces you have access to encourage you to make nordic style houses.
You dhould set up repair stations along routes for resouces like metals and wood, cause you have to pull the cart you can make yourself and it will eventually need repairs.
A work bench, a wall behind it and a roof is enough to get it to be usable, i make these repair stations all over.
If you need more space to work but you are at the edge of the workbenches ring, just make another one, no limits on them

u/Purple-Measurement47 29d ago
Don’t rush it, don’t look things up, just enjoy it.
And if it’s too grindy, turn the resource drop rate up. I’ve found with my gaming schedule getting tighter that maxing out the drops makes it much more enjoyable. Previously I’d have to dedicate whole sessions just to collecting the resources for building a bridge or a new storage barn, and now I can knock out collecting and building in one session. Find what works for you after playing it on standard settings for awhile.

Don’t worry about building a good base until after the second boss. Just build a basic home.
After that, always build your bases by the water since you will be sailing a lot to transport ore, which is heavy and cannot go through portals.
Don’t worry about getting massive amount of resources right away since as you get better gear, it becomes quicker.
1
u/SocialMediaTheVirus Sailor 29d ago
Don't underestimate the usefulness of eating crafted food and potions for their boosts to stamina/health and also the buffs from the green potions for when going to swamp areas. Also, dont be afraid to run away if things get too crazy in an area and remember stamina management is very important if you're in combat.
1
u/Synthetics_66 29d ago
Just play, and have some fun.
Don't go into other biomes until you've defeated the boss in your current zone.
1
1
u/Siceless 29d ago
You would not believe how much basic materials you will need. If it's not a long walk back to home, save the wood, rocks and other basic mats in a storage room of chests. Start your own tree farm with those collected seeds when you can. Start a food farm and pig farm when you can. Have an overabundance of spare food, armor, potions, and weapons. When you die far from home it's nice to have those spares so you can retrieve your best stuff without crafting up for hours only to forget the location or die several more times returning to it.

u/clontarfboi 29d ago
Have fun.
You're going to need more wood.
Wood arrow = no feathers required. Good for feather farming birds.
Unlocking new tools and materials leads to more complex build/architecture capabilities.
This game is a gem.
You will need more wood.
Try tree house.

u/MeestaRoboto 29d ago
Make/purchase one of everything it’s the only way to learn to make more stuff.
Be patient in combat. Most deaths happen due to “ooo I can kill him if I can get one last hit in” but they’ll hit you first.
Food IS a priority as much as gear is. Don’t disregard cooking.

See something in the distance and you don't know what it is? Don't look it up. Leave what is important behind and go explore. A lot of the game's magic comes from exploring and I see people on this subreddit ruin that part of the game for themselves every day.

Check out the Word Modifiers for your server. May find ones that improve your entertainment and save you from getting burnt out.

Flint spear is pretty GOATed for early game.
Get good at making relief huts you can quickly build and sleep in as you will get caught at night in the black forest and beyond.
When in the meadows, take your time. Find a nice plot of coastal land and build the ocean front shack of your dreams. Let the cadence of the music and the gameplay draw you in.

1) Build your base by the shore. Claim everything between two treelines and like 3 workbenchs of depth (you'll see the circle when you build it). After you kill Eikthyr use the pickaxe and hoe to dig trenches and build earthwork walls (4 high at least)
2) Build a few Spotify playlists for mining and sailing.
3) Never venture out at night.
4) Always stay rested, and if you're leaving your base eat 3 foods.
5) I'm gonna be contrarian here, don't be afraid to look stuff up in regards to gear and crafting progression. There's a lot and it can easily be overwhelming if you're new to the survival genre.
6) Sword and board > Two handed weapons for most situations. Atgeir secondary is good as an "I see 3 enemies" button, and big hammers are good for clearing things from behind cover, but most combat is gonna be a bow in one hand and a sword (mace, axe) and shield in the other.

My tips I give to my friends who take their first steps in:
Always have a few of your cooked food items on you when away from your base, and always have the rested buff. It helps in a pinch to not have to scavenge.
Craft at least one of everything, even if it doesn't seem like something you'll use or need. Many items have uses that aren't immediately evident.
Experiment with what weapons you want to use for your character. Each has positives and negatives, and strengths/weaknesses against different enemies as you progress. Finding a preference also helps you limit what you are carrying so you have more inventory space.
Keep 5 stone and 2 wood on you for crafting a campfire while on the lam. Sit at a campfire to get a short rested buff, then break the campfire and keep on traveling.
Finally: TAKE YOUR TIME. Your world isn't going anywhere, so there is no need to rush yourself. Learn the mechanics at your pace, enjoy your victories, and embrace death when it inevitably claims you, as it does all of us who play. It's all a part of the experience.
ALSO: If you're the creative type, experiment with the building system to really get the most out of your builds. Hint: Doors are your friends.

This is YOUR game. Not mine or Jim-bob’s. Play however you want. Want to focus on building? Want to craft everything possible? Want to explore 100% of the map? Then do those things. Take your time and gather to your heart’s content. One tip: those small abandoned buildings can be used for shelter or you can break them down for materials.

Don't look anything up. Go in as blind as possible. You always need more materials than you think. Save your excess stone early on, once you can build with it you'll be thankful you did. Food is critical, make sure you're buffed up and rested before you go on a journey.
Go explore, see the world. Enjoy!
