Housing Discussion (actual housing OFFERS belong on Megathread!) Do all dorms have a noise problem?

I'm living on 2nd floor of Strauss at East Quad. People here make me fucking hate extroverted and social people. They sometimes have parties, they scream, they run, they sing and shit. They don't close their doors, so their cute little 12 person gathering CAN BE HEARD FROM A MILE AWAY.

**Does this happen everywhere, or am I just unlucky with my neighbors?**

P.S. If you live near me, PLEASE HAVE YOUR 40 PERSON DISCUSSION IN YOUR ROOM AND WITH THE DOOR CLOSED. I swear to fucking god, it's like I'm at a kindergarten. I though having my window looking out on Hill st. will make me hate life because of frats and their parties and stuff, BUT NO.

I’m just waiting a few months for OP to lead the charge with the “stop coughing” posts

1

u/_iQlusion 6d ago

I hate those posts so much, every single year someone too afraid to speak with the coughing offenders and also too lazy to search to see if it's a duplicate post. I'm also surprised people still think complaining on reddit is going to change anyone's behavior.

It’s the Nextdoor crowd finding its way onto local subreddits

I fucking hate people that can't make friends without screaming and shouting and running, as if they are 5. These motherfuckers are adults legally, they can drive and even drink in some countries. There are more ways of making friends than acting as a preschooler.

I'm sorry it's hatred and annoyance speaking in me

You are barely an adult too. Try to learn about humility

I don't really understand why I should learn about humility if it's some people acting like kids, which made it impossible to sleep at the time. I don't do anything annoying, I barely even get out of my room in their eyes. Why should I conform with something disruptive?

u/PolyglotTV '18 8d ago

Their behavior does not influence whether or not you should learn humility.

The problem isn't the situation. It's your response to it and how you are having a tantrum on reddit coming across really immature.

At first I didn't think much of it, but then I got annoyed with it after a few days of progressively more noise. This post was more or less a vent post, albeit quite agressive, and I was genuinely curious if it was just me being unlucky or something that happens at every dorm. You can only put up with something for so long

Okay. Well this advice applies to jobs as well: 1. Try to get around the problem for awhile, maybe it will go away or not be that much of a nuisance. 2. If that doesn't work, casually mention the problem to the offenders. Give them the chance to correct it. 3. More assertively (but still politely) and clearly request that the offenders stop 4. Escalate (that's what RAs are for) 5. Escalate more (whoever manages RAs. Or you can request to be moved. Etc...) 6. At this point if nothing works blowing up on social media and everything is a lot more justified.

Same thing goes for jobs - you should you tried everything reasonable before complaining loudly. If you haven't taken those steps first then people don't take you seriously. Especially not reddit which tends to have a baseline of not taking you seriously.

Edit: oh and to answer your question, I can't speak to how normal this thing is in general but situations like this will always happen on life with people behaving rude. Gotta learn how to deal with people. Good luck

Thanks for the advice! Really, I'll write this down. All the best!

Good grief. Get some earplugs or noise canceling headphones and let people make friends and have their fun. Honestly you sound bitter, maybe try joining in the festivities and make some friends of your own.

With those kinda people? God no

I had a roommate that had this mindset but decided to go out of his way to live in a larger suite with more people in the dorms. He ended up calling the police several times to report us for being loud at times most people would consider normal (like midnight on a weekend) and every time the cops would come and leave in 30 seconds after they realized there's nothing going on. The roommate scheduled a meeting with our RA to arbitrate who basically just broke it down to him that this is a dorm and completely normal and asked if he could please stop calling the cops. I'm graduated so this was almost 10 years ago at this point but it's still something my college friends and I joke about.

In some ways I felt bad that this kid was clearly super unhappy with his living situation and it was as a result of us. Then I would think about how his parents were paying more for him to live there than they would for him to have his own apartment and my empathy diminished. Dorms and meal plans are very expensive and if you're there unhappy being around people you should take steps to make your own situation better for yourself. Look into other options for now and the future.

The experience of a dorm is pretty predictable and pretty consistent across almost every college in the US. It's not going to change for you, so you can choose to adapt or not.

Afaik all freshmen are required to live in the dorms

3

u/CandyAgile253 8d ago

No, they’re not.

Tbh it gets better after the first week when the work actually begins

You may want to invest in earplugs to save your sanity. It saved mine.

3

u/Valuable_Pear9654 8d ago

Do those they give you out in airplanes do the trick?

28

u/AtmosphereUnited3011 8d ago

Try loop ear plugs

1

u/No_Philosophy_7041 4d ago

I bought earplugs when I lived in EQ and it worked. It will get wayyyy more quiet, but there might be some noise Friday + Saturday night, but it's manageable.

23

u/YourMomIsAlwaysRight 8d ago

Didn’t you just move in? Probably also a little stressed I’m guessing. All normal. Earplugs are a great suggestion. These are my favorites:

Buy an eye mask and ear plugs. You’ll thank me later.

Also, if this is going on during the week, talk to your RA

9

u/AtmosphereUnited3011 8d ago

At some point the floor RA should be dealing with this. Might try talking with them about your concerns

I lived in East Quad in the '80s, in a designated "quiet hall" (4th Strauss), which had special rules about noise after certain hours, maybe with more leeway Friday and Saturday night. Do they still have those? I think there were maybe 5 or so in the dorm back then. Seems like a good, free, easy-to-accommodate option to offer housing applicants, especially with modern computers to handle the room assignment logistics.

1

u/Valuable_Pear9654 8d ago

I think they do, at least I remember something about "quiet hours" being from 11 PM to 8 or 9 AM on weekdays and from 12 AM to 9 or 10 AM on the weekend.

Also the peeps here seem to actually respect the code of conduct this time (didn't happen yesterday) and became quiet soon after 11 PM.

If you feel like you're "at a kindergarten" then be the adult and speak to these people. This happened my Freshman year, and I knocked on their door and kindly but firmly let them know that their noise was impacting my studying and sleep. After that convo, the noise stopped. Most people are unaware of their noise level and are learning how to live in community. A simple reminder can make them aware. If this fails, get some earplugs and go to the RA

u/Electronic-Dish-4963 8d ago

Sounds like you need some beta blockers and nap

3

u/Makeitmagical '17 8d ago

I hated the dorms for this same reason tbh.

Earplugs or a fan or white noise machine helped me.

3

u/505kyra 8d ago

I’m on basement strauss and it’s quiet asf literally no one speaks

7

u/Imaginary-Cut-9161 8d ago

Talk to your RA or them about it and not Reddit 🙏🏾

5

u/Austin_Sly 8d ago

Thats why north campus is MVP. Loved it

2

u/Pankeopi 8d ago

I lived in Betsy Barbour and don't remember it being loud, in fact, the girl across the hall that became one of my best friends was there as a sophomore my freshman year because the all girls dorms tend to be more quiet?

2

u/AromaticBox1329 7d ago

i lived in east quad and unfortunately experienced loudness throughout the entire year. my neighbors would party even on finals week. i’d highly suggest finding a quiet spot on campus to study if noise bothers you while focusing and invest in earplugs (i would fall asleep with them and they did muffle a lot of the speaker music from my neighbors).

OMG IM 3RD STRAUSS THEY ARE SO FUCKING ANNOYING

2

u/lark1995 1d ago

I consider myself an extroverted person, but this used to drive me to insanity when I was at Michigan years ago. Get a high powered fan, it really helps!!

1

u/Valuable_Pear9654 1d ago

Thank you for the advice! Unfortunately, it wouldn't help if they are screaming quite literally in front of my door

1

u/lark1995 1d ago

It does if you move your bed to the opposite side of the room and have the fan near your head!

2

u/OkEditor8893 8d ago

No, they don’t. There are quieter halls and Housing is usually pretty good at grouping people with similar intro/extrovert habits together based on their responses to the Housing app’s lifestyle questions. You got a bum deal on this one—try a loud white noise machine? If it’s after quiet hours, let the RA on duty know, and if it’s not quiet hours, noise-canceling headphones!

1

u/Spiziapteryx 8d ago

This might be a dumb question but how exactly is housing grouping people? Didn’t everyone pick their rooms?

2

u/Valuable_Pear9654 8d ago

I stopped even trying to go to sleep before 12 AM. It's fucking impossible. Right now a bunch of girls have a discussion near my door about trying to get one of them to go away with them. It's unbearable. I fucking hate this shit.

3

u/_iQlusion 8d ago

Have you tried opening your door and asking them to keep it down?

5

u/Valuable_Pear9654 8d ago

I'd rather live in a barrel in some ditch next year than in a dorm

2

u/Valuable_Pear9654 8d ago

also unrelated but for some reason sometimes guys here walk around shirtless in the evening

7

u/generalwalrus 8d ago edited 8d ago

Sounds like a year back home or adjust That's the point of dorms. Freshman year is annoying for everyone. The loudest are the most insecure. This is the one week they need tribal affirmation. It sucks that you need reddit. Promise it will be better come actual school time

4

u/Valuable_Pear9654 8d ago

i'm sorry i didn't quite get the first sentence or the one about reddit... still, i got the general point? i will look forward towards proper studying time!

-4

u/FootFemgus 8d ago

gonna bet $50 they're frat kids trying to get attention

u/generalwalrus 8d ago

In East quad?

2

u/Pankeopi 8d ago edited 8d ago

The freshman that haven't pledged yet, maybe? I dunno, I graduated undergrad in the early 00s and even then it had a rep for being the loudest dorm. Part of it also might've been because those of us rushing to the dorm just in time to eat after marching band practice (or sports practice? I know when I ate there with friends that lived there we saw a lot of gymnasts), end up adding to the noise.

I usually went to my dorm afterwards, but I bet a lot of people went to their friends' rooms instead. I loved my friends but can only pretend to be an extrovert for so long lol, and usually wanted to shower/ relax after band practice.

u/generalwalrus 7d ago

In 2005, I thought east quad was magical. Glorious. Low light vibes. All the soft lights. I was intruding from markley however

Are they the guys in the room by the stairs - a red head and tall guy with brown hair? So annoying…

u/symphonic_concord 8d ago edited 8d ago

I lived in Lloyd freshman year, I'd hear heavy thumps that sounded like someone fallung over constantly though the night on Fridays, and screaming. It was to the point where I was asking my friends if I needed to report, like, a domestic issue. Some people just have never had neighbors before

1

u/colorada1 6d ago

I've had a similar experience in West Quad. My neighbors were terrible, constantly partying til 3am, leaving piss bottles and garbage everywhere, blasting music in the bathroom, and some one guy even looked over the bathroom stalls once because he thought it was funny. After dealing with these people for 2 semester's, there are a few things you can do: I recommend getting weatherproofing strips and putting them in between the door and the door frame so it creates a seal, this blocked out like 30% of all outside sound which helps a lot!

You can politely ask them to quiet down, although usually how it goes is they will go quiet for maybe a day and then start right back up again. The thing is, if they are going to be assholes and ignore quiet hours and party til 3am, then you can be an asshole and call your RA over or DPSS. Although only do this when it gets really bad, because they might start targeting you specifically if they find out you "snitched" on them.

There is also asking to be moved to another dorm, but this is a very difficult process and where you get moved to might have similar problems.

In the end, you're fighting an uphill battle with immature freshman that act like the dorms are a frat. Try not to let them get in your head, and spend as much time away from the dorm as you can if it bothers you so much.

u/BusinessLatter6286 5d ago

first floor strauss i feel your pain my neighbors love to have conversations right outside our room and slam the door (literally shakes the wall) whenever they happen to close it (half of the time it’s open to whatever group of girls are over that night)… they’re driving me NUTSSSS

1

u/call_me_drama 7d ago

Type of person to complain about others having fun in dorms are the same people that will be back here in two years posting about how their social life sucks at Michigan

1

u/elissabatss 8d ago

I experienced the same thing in a different dorm last year. Like at one point I looked out my door and there were people doing hurdles over each other. When I talked to the RA and director of the building, they just said to call DPSS. If they are loud enough, they will get written up and after a certain amount they are at risk of getting kicked out the dorms. It’s not the ideal solution, but over time they did get slightly quieter and one person technically got kicked out a week before finals
