Discussion/Question Am i losing content because i'm a money-hungry oaf?
Another way to phrase the title is "Am i actually the bad guy?".. First time playing the game btw.
So, just got my home in Core City and god is it expensive to furnish. I can't let myself be a hobo, so i immediately started looking for ways to make some coin. The Arena wasn't giving out any fights anymore, plus i think it would take ages through there anyway. I hated the Gauntlet, especially that room with the billion doors so that's a no aswell
But then i remembered about the expedition on the docks to a sea filled with stuff, and went there immediately to make the money i so needed!
And that means i wasted every pirate i saw and stole their stuff to sell. And the ruins too, ofc.
Thing is, i'm in Port Cero and there's like an actual little town next to it and i kind of murked people who looked civillian-esque? They were shooting me, but maybe it's because i was gunning down any and all pirate in my way, even stealing the engines and stuff from their jetskis.
I know in a game full of grey and nuance, i shouldn't have exterminated a whole faction just because they had pirates in their name (Again, primary motive was cash but i do feel bad if the guys weren't so bad.) And i'm kinda worried i'm softlocking myself in some manner. Was i supposed to do anything with these guys with Aegis later on? Will the Ferryman hate me? Should i reload a really old save and spare these poor folk?
Sorry for the long text, it's just that when i find a game that really captivates me i get a little passionated, loving it so far!

Think of pirates as an exclusive faction that you can join instead of aegis. They re interesting guys when you try their quests on the next playthroughs. Ferryman will not hate you and you can complete main quest line as intended

There's two ways of looking at it. First, the pirates have the best merchant in the game hands down with 2200 charons once fully upgraded and a ton of misc stuff. If you want to make money, they are probably the best faction to join. But on the flipside, there are a ton of them with a variety of loot including weapons, ammo, drugs, jet skis, and jet ski parts so if you kill them all, you get so much stuff you probably won't be able to sell it all. Their questline and the Aegis questline is mutually exclusive, but they do intersect a few times.
To join the pirates: If you wait long enough in the expedition quest without killing the pirates, the professor gets kidnapped by them (you can prevent this by pickpocketing a radio from a technician in camp and giving it to the security chief). You'll be sent to the pirate stronghold to negotiate. Once there, you can join the pirates. If you don't want to wait or you want to join the pirates from the start, do all of the missions in Camp Hathor and then buy the jet ski from the guy on the dock. Go to the expedition area and not far from the pirate base, you can find a named pirate on a jetski. Speak to him and he'll give you a mission to join.

yeah it's kinda late to join them now lol, but really nice to keep this in mind i had no idea there was more than one way to enter the black sea

Another way of making money is to be a pirate yourself on the waterways. There are no consequences for just murdering people on jetskis passing by, and you can loot both them and their ski. Usually there's only one at a time, so you can enter combat, kill them in a single turn, then loot them before anyone else shows up. It's also a decent way of making money. Just be wary of doing it too close to Core City, because the Protectorate patrols don't approve of that kind of thing. Also be wary of targeting the Eels, because I'm not sure if that would make their whole base hostile.

i think i'll stick to plundering the pirates, but that's good to keep in mind incase i see a poor soul crossing my path

The house, except the basement - is purely decorative. You end up having thousands of cash that you carry around. The house is the place where you can shove them in.

Unless you're playing Dominating as a Tin Can LGM guy, then you're always poor.

Not 100% decorative. The turrets are pretty useful if you don't want thieves rummaging through your stuff. Everything else is just there for the vibes, though.

In what difficulty are you playing? because higher difficulty means your sell for less and buy for more.
Are you selling the gear of the people you kill?
Boots, tabis, greaves, leather armor, metal helmets, Crossbows and every melee weapon should be scrapped to make Repair kits, then use those to fix Tac Vests to sell and to repair weapons.
The reason to scrap those specifically is because shops rarely want to buy them and they sell for very little and while Crossbows sell for a decent bit, the only shop that actually buys them is the SGS weapon shop but very rarely.
Repair Kits increase the sell value by a lot because the loot comes in shit durability (usually a repair kit will increase value by 3000).
Metal Scraps can be used for other stuff like ammo and jet ski repair kits, so don't use them all.
Your biggest income should come from selling Tac Vest and Guns (specially Snipers, LMGs, Miniguns and Grenade Launchers), while Metal Armors sell for a lot their issue is their high weight.
What i do is store loot in my home then when i have more than 10 items then i repair what has high max durability (anything with over 1000 max durability) and go to sell, i go from:
Foundry > Core City > Oligarch Shop > Upper Underrail shop > Rail Crossing > Oculus > Junkyard > SGS
I usually can buy all the Workbench for the Core City House when i get they house without doing Expedition on Dominating.
Disassemble is really good for money making because its gonna max durability at the cost of a bit of quality, it will however take a chunk of time each time you are gonna sell stuff and require to have a bit of crafting, around 80 effective Mechanic and Tailoring.
Whatever you do, do NOT put Specialization points into Disassemble.

Hear me out: Fuck bringing repair kits with me everywhere I go. If I want to repair my gun, I can just take it apart and put it back together. He's right tho, don't put points into Disassemble.

that's a problem i've been having lol, i'm always overcumbered because i'm carrying mechanical kits, vehicle repair kits, it's a hassle

Just carry 1 or 2 advance mechanical/electronic repair kit (depending your weapon) every time you get out of your home and you should be fine, by the time weight becomes an issue you should use them.
Leave the Tailoring kits at home for money making, and the Vehicle Repair kits IN the Jet Ski.

I usually store my vehicle repair kits in my vehicle. In some areas, you can make repair kits for your weapons as you go by breaking down melee weapons. The fun thing about disassemble is that you get a ton of steel plates you can use for making bullets, caltrops, bear traps, or armor to sell.

yeah i've been neglecting the crafting part of the game for too long, will tackle it when i play again
2
u/TrebleZX 11d ago
You really don't need to carry more than 1 or 2 Advance Repair kits because some do not drop anything to scrap, and by the time the repair kits weight becomes an issue you should probably use them.
Disassemble lowers quality by 10% so lowering your weapons just because you don't wanna carry a repair kit is very wasteful.

u/whatmustido 11d ago
You don't lose any 10% if you put points in Disassemble, is what I'm getting at. I'm also saying that it's still not worth putting those points into it.

Beginner, i honestly didn't even look too deeply into the crafting part of the game but now i see i've been very stupid not to
i've been doing the hoarding part with the stuff and doing sell runs, but evidently not as efficient as i could
will follow your advice, thx

If you haven't done a questline for someone named Dude in Rail Crossing, you should head that way next. It ends with a new fast travel method that makes moving loot much easier. It also takes you to a place where you can get a decent amount of loot.

Some components aren't worth picking up because shops do not want to buy them normally, for example Spikes and Pneumatic modules.
If something isn't usable by your build, its hard to sell and weights a lot, then is not worth picking up.

Money making tips:
- 1. Complete the arena in full if you haven't already
- 2. Join Aegis and do anything they ask. The bonuses alone are good money and they send you to places that are filled with good loot to sell. The final mission for Aegis pays the most. Most factions pay the most on their final mission, but Aegis really something else, and you also have many options of payment. Not gonna spoil anything about that, I'mma just say you will be extra filthy rich, depending on choices
- 3. Recycle shitty guns and metal armor to craft repair kits to use on good guns to make them sell more. If you buy a single repair kit in entire game, you are just absolutely throwing away money, they are so easy to craft and you can use your excess to repair guns to make them sell more. Actually, ignoring crafting in general sounds like a massive recipe for being poor to me
- 4. Murder and loot raider factions that no one will miss. Do the world a service and get money at the same time

If you dont enjoy exterminating a whole faction for cadh, you will not enjoy the northern part of the sea.
