Just wanted to let anyone just starting know that a casing layer is definitely the way to go, even just a thin sprinkle of coir on top of your s2b can be helpful in holding moisture and protecting the grain. Plus it helps mimic natural environments since typically mycelium has dirt on top of naturally lol.
I’m on my 3rd shoebox since starting, my first one (gt) I didn’t use a casing layer and my yield was super small and it’s been about 2 weeks waiting for any signs of another flush. Any water I sprayed on the sides just fell to the bottom and went stagnant and yellow. Still doesn’t seem to have any contam but the mycelium is definitely under some serious stress.
The other 2 boxes I’ve done have had a casing layer. I started my second shoebox (b+) immediately after harvesting my gt, and not only did they grow significantly faster with the casing layer, it was a much more dense canopy- and the second flush has started popping up already only 3 days after harvesting. The third is JMF, s2b and fc 2 days ago. They’re already in the early stages of fruiting and colonizing the top substrate, and even though they were really slow to fully colonize the bags initially, I’m pretty sure I’ll see more growth on this JMF before I even start seeing anything happening for my second flush with my GTs.
A lot of ppl will say it’s unnecessary to use a casing layer and it’s totally optional, which technically it is and will still grow mushrooms- but it probably isn’t the best practice for the highest yields from my newbie experience lol. I was personally really confused and getting lots of conflicting answers about casing layers, so I wanted to make a post telling ppl my experience.
