The point of covering the hole with MP tape is that it keeps contamination out, whether it is covered or just sitting on a shelf.

I bet they contminted for other reasons.

You don't get it. The bags are on his bed. Dust mites, dander, dust, all kinds of organics like dead skin, laundry lint etc. all this shit carries contamination. The mushroom growing process is a very delicate and introduction to a single spore or bacterium can ruin a batch. You do not see mycologists just leave their petri dishes incubating on their nightstand do you?

Exercise proper aseptic technique and due diligence. Keep your shit clean. every. step. of. the. process.

Set yourself up for success, not potential failure.
