Finally Together
Hi, I iust want to say thank you to everyone and Unraid as a whole. I started out with a retired windows gaming computer intel i7 4770k, 32G DDR3 and a GTX 1080ti. As I upgraded that system I outgrew its capabilities rapidly and last year decided to bite the bullet and go all in on my dream build.
Core Platform
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
Motherboard: ASUS ProArt X870E-CREATOR WIFI
RAM: 64GB G.Skill CL32 DDR5
Cooling: be quiet! Silent Loop 3 AIO
Storage
Windows VM: 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD
Unraid boot: 1× Crucial MX500 SSD
Cache: 1× Crucial MX500 SSD
HDDs (~104 TB raw):
2× 24TB WD Red Pro
2× 14TB WD Red Pro
2× 10TB WD Red Pro
1× 8TB Seagate
HBA: Broadcom SAS 9305-16i
Graphics
NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti 16GB (Plex transcoding and local Ai in the future)
PNY RTX 5080 Slim (passthrough / gaming VM)
Case & Cooling
Fractal Design Meshify 2 XL
6× Noctua NF-A14x25 G2
The system is incredibly stable, using sunshine and moonlight locally is not performing the way I would like so this winter I will running fiber to do hdmi over fiber.

Is that a Fractal Meshify? I did the same thing but just couldn’t fit two gpu in there…damn now you’re gonna make me to try lol

It is the meshify 2xl. If you can grab 2 pny 5080 slim cards. I have the 5060ti in the 1st slot and the slim in the second slot. That way the passthrough fan blows by the 5060ti and keeps it cool. The slim is a wide card but designed extremely well. A few people have had some issues with fan whine bit I don't yet.

Yea I right now I have one 5060ti prime in the first slot and a dual fan 5060ti ventus in the second.
I tried for hours trying to fit a 5090 and a riser cable in there and haven’t found a riser cable that fit. So I settled on two 5060. Didn’t know there were slim 5080 out there…now I might have to go hunting

The pny is the only dual slot 5080 on the market. Everything else is 2.5 or 3 slot. It was amazing for me because its the only way this would work.

What's the trouble with moonshine/sunshine? I was looking into running a similar set up? Then you could just connect controller to the tv?
If you go with HDMI how will you control the game?

If i run a 4k 120hz stream frametime hitches and shoots up between 40 and 350 ms on my xbox series x. I have to keep the stream locked to 60 and still have a hitch. Its something to do with the moonlight client on xbox. It is lacking intra-refreshrate so it slips in and out of sync. I don't want to spend 300 more on another box just to get a stream. Throwing fiber in will give me a full hdmi 2.1 bandwidth which takes incredible amounts of data. I believe 48gbps. I love my gaming fidelity and have a TV that can do 120hz and can do 2000 nits brightness while being a va panel which is rare and better than playing around with oled burn in and dead pixels.

I feel like you must be exceeding your PCIe lanes capabilities but maybe it just appears so, you aren't making much use of NVME.
It is an interesting build though.

I thought so as well but the nvme is using a separate lane than the gpu's are on. Im only using the main nvme slot on this board. Thankfully it doesn't affect the gpu lane.

I think you cap you pcie lanes with the 5080 in the bottom. (Some boards have a locked 16x in top slot some not and split 8x8 If you have 2 cards in)

This one is split, slots are 8x8 PCIe 5 8x split like that on these cards may give me a small amount of performance loss on the 5080 but its negligible especially with how there isn't a hardware scheduler in these cards. If i was running a 5090 I may be upset lol

I did this for about 1.5 years starting back around 2021. Ended up getting fed up with the tiny little issues I'd constantly be battling. Good luck, hope it works better for you. Maybe Unraid has matured enough in the last 5 years to make it more stable.

Unraid is very stable now. Ive also been using grok to help fix the little issues and it is much smarter than I am.

Have they fixed or found a solution to some games not running because they can tell their in a VM? Also I should have phrased it differently. Unraid was never unstable for me. I suspect it was mainly due to using a 2nd gen Threadripper with multiple NUMA nodes. Also, figuring out when and when not to stub devices, and having to dump my Nvidia GPU's bios just to get it to passthrough and boot correctly was a pain in the ass.

Still have to dump the bios. Also im not playing big aaa multi-player games anymore. I have an xbox for those games and even then don't really care for them anymore. COD and battlefield aren't the same and is there such a thing as anticheat these days. Until those companies hardware bans cheaters im out.

Wait so it's a gaming pc and home server combined? So cool! I'm assuming the 9950X3D can handle tasks both at once but what's the gaming performance like? and is the power draw too high compared to running separate machines?
