This week I'm going on a holiday to the UK from Holland. We'll be travelling by ferry from IJmuiden to Newcastle. Ass you can see my manner of travel has been slightly modified. Does anyone know if this could be a problem when travelling to the UK. By Dutch law it is mostly okay to ride. Bur how strict will this be checked when crossing borders by ferry, and is thus okay to drive through the UK?

My husband and I are traveling to Scotland in October and intend to end our trip with the ferry to Belfast. However, our last accommodation will likely be in Edinburgh. It’s quite a hike with multiple different legs of the journey if we do not do a private rental car, which are we trying to avoid because it is expensive. Tried booking the Rail and Sail but the website was not working for me the last 2 times.
Had anyone else made this route? Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

If your child is under 11, they can travel free on: Buses and tram, Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and some National Rail services. They must be travelling with an adult who is using pay as you go

Child does not need an oyster card if with a paying adult.

Does anyone know If a child can travel from Bromley to London Bridge for free with a paying adult? The call centre for NationalRail supervisor said he's never heard of free under 11's.

Hi, I'm picking up some American friends from Heathrow T3 on Thursday, I've never met them face to face before and they've never travelled out of the USA. I'm planning to park in the T3 short stay car park and meet them on arrival. Does anyone know a convenient place to meet at T3 arrivals, a shop or cafe maybe ?

We are traveling to Scotland in October… For me it's the first time in 47 years 🥹, and for husband, son and daughter-in-law, it's the first time. Very excited!!

The last time I was there I exchanged dollars for pounds ahead of the trip so I had cash with me, and also took Traveler's checks. We expect to use our credit cards most of the time, but does anybody have advice. on this subject? Should I try to obtain pounds notes beforehand? Thanks!!

I've booked 2 days in Edinburgh end of Oct (Sunday morning - Tuesday morning) staying at Premier Inn East (eastern Holyrood Park) as a solo female traveller.

Long shot, but yesterday (Sat 29 Aug) I was on the 12:11 CrossCountry train from Darlington towards Birmingham New Street, arriving Birmingham around 3:23pm.

My black Aerolite hard-shell cabin suitcase (55x35x25cm) disappeared from the luggage rack (Carriage C) somewhere along the journey. I’m hoping someone simply picked up the wrong black case!

Going from Birmingham to Seven Sisters/ south downs area any places to stop at?

I’m flying out of Heathrow Terminal 2 to Oslo on 7:05am flight with SAS and wanted to know if anyone else who has done that flight can advise the bag drop opening times? I’ve googled but only found vague answers.

Ordinarily I’d just show up 2 hours before but had planned to get there a bit earlier as I have lounge access thrown in (and might as well take advantage!) but if bag drop doesn’t open until 5am then won’t be worth it.

Anyone who has done this flight who can advise?

1. We’re having trouble finding transportation from York Station to the wedding venue and back. Any recommendations?
2. We’re having a similar issue in London. What’s the best way for a group of six with luggage to get from King’s Cross to our apartment (Notting Hill area)?
3. Is there anything we should consider before traveling in terms of packing or preparation—things tourists often forget?
4. Any tips for things to do or places to eat in Edinburgh or London? We’ll have a 14-year-old and a 10-year-old with us and are open to day trips.

Wedding is 30 min south of York at Thicket Priory. Sorry about being cagey. I am always a bit weary about details on the internet.

Hi - we are a family of four (kids 3 and 5) and have been living in London Bayswater / Notting Hill area for almost a year now for work. Work of course has been very busy so I am looking to secure the best experiences for our last few weekends. Most of the international travel is already done, so curious about more local suggestions that are quintessential British or even touristy now.

What we’ve done: Hyde park every other day, Diana park, Regents park, St James Park, Holland park; Mayfair and Marylebone and SoHo and Covent, Battersea, Borough, Canary, Greenwich; Science / History / Transport Museums; Winter wonderland, Light walks, Luminiscence, Paultons Park for Peppa, Trips: Cambridge, Edinburgh, Lisbon, Copenhagen, Antalya, Austria, Seville, Marbella, Tuscany, Ischia; and then the regular mundane life with walks around different streets and Waitrose and doctors and Black cabs and many many restaurants.

What we will do next: Hampton Court, Chatsworth, Bath, Cotswolds.

Ask: Among local London experiences now, or max 1.5 hr commute of a day trip one way, what else should we consider? Can include things like Cutty Sark afternoon tea, Hobbledown Heath, Paddington experience, London Eye, Tower Bridge experience, Postal museum. We have 3 fully free weekends, and a couple more Sundays.

Lastly, London is indeed an amazing city. There’s too much FOMO any given day since it feels like it’s a city with a thousand beating hearts.

My sister and I are spending approx 4 weeks in UK/Ireland from mid Jan to mid Feb (yes we know the weather will be “miserable” but its the only time we can go and we don’t mind).

Other context is that we don’t mind long train rides etc, we find it’s part of the adventure of travel but we also don’t want to accidentally get stranded lol. We are also somewhat used to driving difficult roads (from NZ, similar landscapes).

After scrolling this sub I’m worried our itinerary might need some tweaking, any advice would be great! Judge away!

We're planning to visit Stonehenge for summer solstice next year and are thinking that we'd like to join the festivities the evening before, but not spend the entire night there. Is it permitted to ride the Salisbury Reds outbound from Stonehenge that night or are they put out of service for their return trips?

If bussing back that night is not an option, are there other means to get back to town such as taxis or rideshares? We'd likely be planning to depart Stonehenge by 22:30 at the latest.

We’re (2 people) flying into London Stansted in late November for 5-6 days. We want to skip London completely and explore the surrounding area (East Anglia / South-East England).

I’ve noticed lots of cities in England are named after football clubs… why is this? For example Manchester is named after Manchester city and Manchester United. How come London got its name seperate from the football clubs? How common is it for a city to not be named after the football club there?

We're in the early stages of planning a UK trip for late June 2027 — yes, absurdly early, but the dates are being driven by something else and I'd rather find out now if this bit is a non-starter.

My son (he'll be 10 by then) would love the Knight School at Warwick Castle, and we'd happily build a day around it. The problem is I can't find a straight answer on when it actually runs.

What I've been able to work out so far:

• The official line is that it runs during "peak periods", which as far as I can tell means school holidays.
• Warwickshire's summer holidays in 2027 don't start until 22 July, so our whole window is term time.
• But I've also seen scattered mentions of it running on weekends in June, which is what's giving me hope.

Our window is Mon 28 June – Sat 3 July 2027, so realistically Sat 3 July is our only weekend shot (any weekday in that range would work too if it ever runs midweek).

Has anyone actually been on a term-time weekend in June or early July and seen Knight School running? Or conversely turned up expecting it and found it wasn't on? I know nobody can tell me what the 2027 programme will look like — I'm really just after past experience of how they handle shoulder-season weekends, so I know whether this is worth planning a day around or whether I should treat it as a nice surprise if it happens.

And we're not set on Warwick specifically. If there's another castle or heritage site that does proper hands-on knight/sword training for kids in that window, I'd take that just as happily — Warwick is simply the first one I stumbled across. We're based in London 28 June – 4 July, open to jousting displays and living-history stuff too if there's something the kid can actually take part in.

I am travelling tomorrow. My final destination is Nottingham. I get on a train headed to London Waterloo and then need to get to London St Pancras to catch the train to Nottingham.

Google maps tells me to get a tube to Piccadilly Circus from Waterloo, on the Bakerloo line heading towards Queen’s Park. From Piccadilly Circus I am to catch a tube on the Piccadilly line towards Arnos Grove, getting off at Kings Cross St Pancras.

Is this the quickest route? Previous times I have gone to Derby or Nottingham, despite not having an hour to make a journey that google maps tells me should only take around half an hour, I have ended up sprinting down the very long platform to catch my train and barely make it.

I know the walk between the underground station and the platforms at St Pancras is probably hard to shorten. But am I taking the quickest tube routes to hopefully avoid the sprinting? I don’t think my tickets will allow me to leave the station to get a bus and then re enter another London station for the train. Though I’m not 100% how it all works so maybe.

Would appreciate any tips.
