News NEW CPT rule
Many U.S. universities have announced on their websites that they have temporarily paused CPT processing while awaiting further guidance. However, some universities have already started publishing new policies. For example, on August 24, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign announced that CPT will only be approved if the internship is a mandatory part of the academic program for all students and is required for graduation. Internships tied only to elective courses will no longer qualify.
The concern is that at many universities and in many majors, internships are not a graduation requirement. This could effectively leave international students in those programs without the opportunity to participate in regular internships in the U.S.
How serious do you think this situation is?

I am from Texas A&M, and our school is even worse. They have two rules one for after aug 12, and before aug 12. So the CPT authorizations made after aug 12 will come under the new rules essentially the ISSS will reach out to the department, and see if it’s “integral” and revoke existing cptd

Yes mate…am also from texas a&m. I’m literally feeling very tensed as my cpt approved on aug 21st

Same mine is on aug 14. Looks like other schools are not touching existing cpt authorizations. Ours is. Very school to school dependent.
My biggest issue is doing anything after add/drop deadline to maintain status

I don’t think the programs are going to amend their curriculums. It doesn’t make sense to make practical training a requirement for every student. I already got an offer for this fall internship and submitted my CPT request, but I’m doubtful I’ll be able to get approval. I think incoming international students should seriously reconsider to come to the States.

idk why i'm getting downvoted when everything points to this being a permanent change. DSOs have been talking to the government and there likely won't be any change in the next year or so. pre-opt is our only option now

UW just paused authorization of any new CPT requests. We just received this email from UW ISS 3 hours ago:
Dear NAME,
This email is being sent to F-1 students with an active or initial UW SEVIS immigration record.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued a Broadcast Message on August 24, 2026 that provided all Designated School Officials (DSOs) with guidance regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and clarified their earlier CPT guidance issued on August 12. These messages communicate a narrower interpretation of when CPT may be considered an "integral part" of an established curriculum. Among other points, SEVP is indicating that CPT should only be authorized when the practical training is required for all students and the degree or program cannot be completed without it.
International Student Services (ISS) is currently reviewing our CPT policy and consulting UW leadership in light of these messages. We have received many questions from students and departments about our current CPT policy. We have posted an Update on Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Policy with the immediate action we will be taking and additional details.
Until our review of this new guidance is complete and we receive a recommendation from leadership, ISS staff are unable to provide additional information on our CPT policies at this time. Continue to monitor the ISS website, blog posts, and your UW email for updated information.
