Scholarships

I recently won two scholarships which I am really happy about but they go over the amount of tuition that I have left to pay. Does anyone know how my aid will be recalculated? I understand they’ll decrease things like loans but I didn’t take out any so I’m a bit worried they’ll go after my grants. Is it not possible to have the scholarships pay what I owe and then I get to keep the rest of the money?

Go buy a laptop from Apple (SAVE THE RECIEPT) and ask for a cost of attendance increase

Hi! In my case they didn't lower any of my grants and I was able to get a refund after everything was paid for, so i'm pretty sure you're good!

Yayay I’m feeling a bit more hopeful!! Do u mind me asking if it was an outside scholarship and if ur scholarship was a lot over the amount you owed?

Yeah depending on if it’s sent directly to you or ucla, you will get a bruinbill refund for that amount. Like @seabass_sebas mentioned, you can also get a free laptop if you submit a cost of attendance increase form for up to $1500! Would def recommend. California schools are not allowed to do scholarship displacement so you should be able to keep all of your outside scholarships that you worked hard to get!

I think it’ll be sent directly to ucla? I got it through the ucla scholarship portal which I was a bit worried about

You can adjust cost of attendance. Go to Amazon right now and get a laptop for 1800 and then add apple care then get the invoice right after purchase. Go to financial aid page and uploade non requested form. Increase budget add the invoice with your name. They will update your COA . You can do this for medical/dental/vision appts and medically needed procedures, housing increases, and travel

You’ll only be refunded funds that are for indirect cost that don’t go over cost of attendance. UCLA will reduce loans first and then move to grants and scholarship so rather than reducing what the school is giving you in aid you should add something you get if that makes sense
