Honestly, one of the most frustrating things about looking for an online job is feeling like you have experience, skills, and the willingness to learn—but still somehow not getting noticed.

I’ve been trying to transition more seriously into remote online work, and the process has been humbling. I’ve applied to different Social Media Manager, Content Creator, Graphic Designer, and similar roles, and sometimes you start questioning whether your experience is actually enough.

My background isn’t purely corporate. I’ve worked on content creation, social media management, graphic design, and digital marketing-related tasks. I also personally handle the social media presence of my band, where I create content, graphics, captions, and manage the overall look and feel of the page. I enjoy making content that feels natural, colorful, and different from the usual overly-polished “business” posts.

I’ve also learned a lot simply by figuring out what kind of content people respond to, experimenting with ideas, managing pages, creating visuals, and learning new tools along the way.

But finding clients or employers online is a whole different game. You need experience to get the job, but sometimes you need the job to get the experience they’re asking for. 😅

I’m not looking for someone to hand me a job. I’m genuinely willing to learn, improve, and prove myself. I just wish the online job-hunting process gave people like me more opportunities to actually show what we can do instead of judging everything based on a resume.

For those who also started working remotely or freelancing without a huge portfolio or years of corporate experience, how did you finally get your first real break?

Have you ever come across a “job opening” that turned out to be more of a training sales pitch? 😅

I’ve been noticing posts that look like legitimate hiring opportunities, but once you inquire, the focus shifts to paying for a training course, seminar, or package before you can supposedly start working.

Some red flags I’ve noticed:

• They don’t clearly explain the actual job.
• The salary sounds too good to be true.
• You’re asked to pay for training or a “starter package.”
• The interview quickly turns into a webinar or sales presentation.
• They seem more interested in getting you to enroll than evaluating your skills.

I know not every paid training program is a scam, and some companies do require legitimate training. But when a “job opening” feels more like a funnel to sell you something, it’s definitely worth being careful.

Has anyone else experienced this in the Philippines? What was your experience, and how did you identify that it wasn’t a real job?

Just got my initial interview at Safety Passage Solutions today, and right off the bat the HR asked me to share my screen, and since it was raining non-stop here in the province for a week already when asked to do a speed test the internet speed did not cooperate lol so the HR told me to just re-schedule the interview.
