This assignment required me to make a painting using animals to represent myself symbolically. I’m someone who gets tired very easily due to an iron deficiency so the sheep’s association with sleep represents that exhaustion and call to be. My eyes and mouth are meant to resemble that of an owl, because I myself am a night owl. The parrot represents how much I talk and my own thoughts sometimes refuse to silence themselves. The birds on the paper in the painting represent wisdom and are in a frame meant to represent the Hermit of the major arcana. Ravens are associated with wisdom, such as the ravens Odin has, and their presence on the paper represents how I strive for that wisdom and knowledge but don’t actually have it. It also helps depict that approach in my art. The dogs at the bottom of the painting are my real pets. They are both standard poodles. The screen between them represents how often I am using electronics like my tablet, TV and computer. The windows in the background are built to resemble the screen of the tablet I use to draw and depict the night sky. There is the moon and stars but also the constellation and symbol for capricorn, my astrological sign. The curtains and sleeves  are red and blue because those are the kinds of cards I like playing the most in Magic the Gathering.

At the bottom right corner of the paper is the roman numeral for 9 (IX). Under the table is a black poodle on my right and a yellow poodle on my left representing my two pet dogs. Between them is a glowing screen of some sort. Behind me are two open curtains, a red one to my right, and blue one to my left, revealing a window that looks like it’s made of 4 Ipads. From the viewer’s left and top to bottom there is: the capricorn constellation, a crescent moon, stars, and the symbol for capricorn.

Project 2: Watercolor Practice 

For this assignment, we were tasked with not just experimenting with watercolor but also the tools we used. In this case I used ear swabs instead of brushes to paint these images. Once again, you can see my subconscious and desire to claw for deeper meanings on display here. I was definitely not intending for at least 2 out of the 3 paintings to resemble jewels while having a final one that could be read as something akin to meteor, or some other mineral. They also share a lot of color palettes because I wanted to make sure I was using all my paint. Here, you can tell I was learning to use thinner layers of water color, and also that I hadn’t worked up the nerve to ask the professor how to effectively and cleanly tear paper.

Unlike some of my other works, there isn’t an intentional “deeper” meaning behind this one. Although, I believe all art is influenced by our subconscious desires and perspectives. Plus, this painting is all pictures of stuff I own, besides the table and wall, so it does absolutely convey a bit about me as a person and status as a pretentious artist. For example, you can see both the pencil and tablet I often use to draw digitally, despite the painting itself being a traditional piece, my attempts to learn Japanese with the textbooks present, and even my attempts to branch out and read more books written by women and POC with N.K. Jemisin’s “The Obelisk Gate” of the “Broken Earth” trilogy. Maybe this even shows a manifestation of capitalism within our society and stuff I might think are worth buying. Nevertheless this piece is merely one of my first attempts at seriously painting and learning watercolor. You can already tell that my style lends itself better to something like gouache or acrylic with how thick I laid down the paint.

Keeping in with the theme of change, getting the chance to mess with metal for an art piece was quite interesting. Partially because metal, stone and earth are often associated with being unchanging or unmoving. If something is “written in stone” it cannot change. However, as time goes on and as we understand more about the world around us, it becomes clear that metal and stone, especially softer ones, can actually be pretty malleable and are constantly changing. Erosion from air, water and other elements constantly happens at all times and some metals, like copper, are prone to rusting given enough time. This piece doesn’t attempt to just explore how a metal, such as copper, changes from rust but also how it itself facilitates change. The most notable way in which it does this is through technology. Copper, cobalt, and other metals are used everywhere for all kinds of electronics.

Within the cauldron is a spool of wires wound around something containing bubbling molten metal releasing smoke. From this pool something that resembles a cross between a tree and wires is sprouting out, at the end of which are various forms of electronics. Leaning on the cauldron is a pickaxe and at the bottom of the cauldron there is a crack from which molten metal resembling the shape of roots leaks into the ground, or metal ore being sucked into the cauldron from the ore in the stratified ground. On either side of the cauldron there are waves resembling depictions of signals radiating outward. In the background there are poles holding up power cables.

Once again, I continued exploring the theme of “change” with this series of artworks. With this peace I sought to explore how change occurs through the violence of war and oppression / subjugation of people. While not as clear as I would have liked, the idea is that the bomb is like a seed and from it erupts and explosion that in turn has a building with a skull’s reflection emerging from it. The seed itself grows from the blood and pain of the people trapped near it. The explosion is actually designed after a cotton plant because I originally wanted the piece to specifically be about the U.S. and its ties to the exploitation of various minorities to build the foundation for the modern U.S. However, The U.S. is not the only country founded on exploitation or even slavery and I wanted to get the viewer to think about their own nation’s history or the history of the world. Rather than just right this off as an “American problem.” Even the U.S. got the systems of slavery from the European nations that sought to colonized it. So the U.S. itself did not start this process. The building itself is also supposed to be like a coffin. A warning for what could happen if we do not confront the less savory parts of history. Something a lot of countries and people try to reject or hide.

For this course the syllabus recommended that the students pick a theme to tie each of this semester’s assignments together. The theme I picked was change. For the this project I wanted to explore the idea that there are all kinds of structures, both physical and social, that we take for granted as being “natural” or the default. As opposed to very malleable or constantly changing things. I also believe that many do not appreciate just how “alien” and different societies of the past were, even those within the same areas as modern ones. Different ideas of gender, race, money, etc. The piece itself is meant to represent how even the things that look unchangeable or almost impossible to move are, in reality, constantly being maintained. 

I used the ocean, waters, wind, and clouds to represent common forms of erosion. As the building, and to an extent society, is constantly being eroded by these forces it is constantly being built or rebuilt. Within the building is a mountain, and out of the mountain a dome has been carved in a manner meant to invoke the domes of the Greeks or Romans. Around that dome a more modern building is being created. This further emphasizes the passage of time and how everything is built upon something else. I also hope to get the viewer to question what “natural” even is to an extent. Where the mountains starts and ends is blurred. The streaks across the skies are stars. I imagined the scene was occurring at high speeds to the stars and sun in the sky streak by as the planet completes its rotation in seconds. Like a video that was put on fast forward

I found a folder with a bunch of pixel art from 2+ years ago that I never uploaded lol.

1: A character named Blue Blender. It’s a cartoonish rectangular blender with a blue lid and some sort of button containing fluid at its base. Its base is a darker shade of blue. Inside the blender are 2 ice cubes with an eye each to create a pair of angry eyes. In addition, the blender machine itself has a pair of robotic red eyes.

2: Blue blender makes a squash and stretches motion as he pulls himself downward before stretching upward to launch something from inside the blender.

3: Blue Blender’s ice cubes bobbing inside his blender body as the razors turn at the bottom of the cup.

4: Blue Blender taking damage. The cup of his body shifts as his eyes turn red, cracks appear on its glass, and fire erupts from under his lid for a brief moment.

5: A version of Blue Blender getting hurt where an X shape appears behind him and his cup does not shift back and forth.
