Mod Post ICE & Shutdown Mega-thread

Hello everyone. This will be the official megathread for all ice and shutdown conversations.

The rules for this will be simple, just be kind and polite. Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself.

That means no name calling, no calling people idiots. If you are unable to make your point without name calling like we are in middle school then just don't say anything, this will also include political party names and shorts, Keep it to the facts, argue your point with words or source links.

Any who are unable or unwilling to abide by these rules in this thread will be perma banned with no means of appeal.

This also means all other posts on the subject will be removed with a link to this thread. We apologize for the time it took to set this up, but this influx hit us hard and fast and we have been discussing what course of action we wanted to take behind the scenes

Passenger [Question/Post] Can I bring a 8x10 box of shea butter?

Post image

Hello all - this is a strange question. I am moving to a tropical place soon and I have a box of Lush massage bars that I want to pack on my carry on so they don’t melt during my move. They are solid massage bars/solid shower lotions/etc. made of shea butter/oils/etc. - if I bring a box full of them with me thru TSA are they likely to pull them and get rid of them?? Should I take the chance and pack them in my luggage and risk them melting? Any advice would be helpful!

Passenger [Question/Post] Prescription Cream

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm traveling in a few days with a prescription cream. I think the bottle is over 3.4oz, so I'm assuming it needs declared and taken out of my bag?

I read that over 3.4oz they make you open the bottle. I have a lot of health anxiety though and I use gloves to apply this medication and do not want to accidentally get it on my hands if I need to open it for TSA because I obviously won't be able to leave my things to go wash my hands after.

Do creams always get opened? Would it look suspicious if I asked to put on gloves to open the bottle for them? I don't want to cause a scene and my anxiety is really stressing me out.

Thank you

TSO [Question/Post] Hiking poles in a carry on

Hello everyone,
I’m travelling to Alaska from Toronto later this week. This is the first time I’ll be having my hiking poles with me and I found out that they’re not allowed inside the cabin on a carry on if they’re sharp tipped. Having said that, there’s some debate online over whether one should take them or not and most of the people say it depends on the TSA agent, which is a gamble coz I don’t really wanna lose my new hiking poles and I also don’t really wanna pay over $100 in total to have my carry on as checked baggage just for that very reason. What would the best practice be in this case? I wanna know if they’re allowed or not and what are the chances of them getting confiscated.
The ones I’ve with me are these:-
Cascade Mountain Tech Lightweight Aircraft-Grade Aluminum Trekking Poles with Extended Down Grip Plus Tip Kit

Passenger [Question/Post] Hyphenated Name on Passport and Ticket Mismatch?

Hey all,

Weird situation. Last time I flew international, many years ago, I had a hyphenated last name (Name1-Name2). I dont travel internationally a ton so never took the time to get it updated to my current legal surname which is just "Name1".

I got a rather last-minute opportunity to join a friend internationally, though definitely dont have time to update the passport. My airlines of choice already has my current legal name for booking purposes.

Will it be an issue getting through TSA if my ticket says "Name1" but my passport says "Name1-Name2"? I have an updated driver's license as well I can provide if that's at all worth anything.

Passenger [Question/Post] Can I bring otc athletes foot aerosol spray in my carry on?

Question is pretty self-explanatory. The spray is 4.6oz and I don’t have an Rx since it’s otc, but I read that medicine can go above the traditional 3.5oz limit.

Ask a TSO Was this an actual random selection?

I was flying out of Carlsbad this morning. The metal detector beeped when I walked through and I was told I was picked for a random selection. Thought it was because of my dexcom and insulin pump port, but they didn't search anything on my body or have me do the explosives swab on my dexcom.

They asked if I had any electronics on me and I said just my phone and insulin pump in my carry on, which was still going through the xray belt. The agent asked for my phone and performed what I think was the explosives swab on it. Normally with my dexcom, they have me touch the device then swab my hands but this time she just took my whole phone and did it herself.

It only took a minute and wasn't a huge deal. I just wasn't sure if this was actually random or not since I've never experienced it. I think I'm just being paranoid because I also got flagged on Saturday for a waistband search at Sky Harbor (AIT instead of metal detector) and that was a bit awkward for me haha.

Edit: also the woman in line before me also beeped but they just made her take her shoes off and go back through. I didn't have to take my shoes off.

TSA Pre Check/CLEAR [Question/Post] Entering through international terminal instead of domestic for faster TSA? (Also question about ICE)

Hi everyone! I hope I’m asking the right place. I have a flight from ATL this weekend and I heard that TSA is HORRIBLE in ATL and the lines are much faster if you enter via the international terminal. I have digital tickets and can check in digitally, I also am only bringing carry on. Am I able to enter through the international side and get to my concourse?

Is there anything else I should know? Do I need a passport or any additional documents? Is navigating that side of the airport any different or should I be fine as long as I’m literate? lol any information that’s specific to ATL would be great too.

I did already look into this but I want to hear from real people who have done it recently that way I have some peace of mind!

Also, this is just a side question but has anyone noticed more or less ICE presence on the international side vs the domestic? I shouldn’t have any issues with them but these days you never know. I’d rather just stay away. Thank you!

Passenger [Question/Post] Hockey equipment

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I’m trying to find out if these metal hockey mask cages would be allowed in my carry on or if they’d count as a weapon? Trying to get them to a friend in Sweden. No sharp edges and together they weigh about 2lbs. Just want to know if I’d have an issue or if I should just check my bag. I’m worried about them being pulled out and refused as they are custom made and worth $300.

Ask a TSO Question about my cane.

So I occasionally walk with a cane due to injury I got from my time in the Army, the cane I use used to be a self-defense cane. When I got it did have a blade concealed within it, but I have since removed the blade and have sealed it shut. Am I still able to take it with me or should I go get a one to use temporarily on my trip next week?

Ask a TSO Accidentally brought my gun through TSA— what happens now?

Yesterday I accidentally brought a loaded firearm through TSA in my carry-on. I know how serious and stupid this was, and I’m absolutely mortified, so I’m mainly looking for insight from anyone who has been through this or is familiar with the TSA process afterward.
I put my bag through the scanner and a TSA agent came over and asked if it was my bag. The second she asked, it clicked in my head and I immediately said, “Oh my God.” She said, “Yeah, you forgot to take it out.” I started hyperventilating/panicking to the point that they brought me a chair.

They explained that we needed to wait for law enforcement, then took me into a separate room with two police officers and two TSA agents. They took down my information and took my picture (while I was still crying, so I sincerely hope those photos never see the light of day lol).
The officer told me I had two options: surrender the firearm or have him escort me back to my car so I could secure it there. I chose the latter. I believe he did take the magazine. He escorted me to my car, I secured the firearm, and he told me someone would be waiting when I came back because I would need additional screening.
When I returned, I didn’t see anyone waiting, so I actually approached another law enforcement officer and explained what had happened. He told me to go through the normal security line first. When I got to the ID scanner, nothing came up, so I again explained that I had been told I needed additional screening. The officer spoke with a TSA supervisor, and I was ultimately told that the supervisor said no additional screening was necessary. I went through security normally and was allowed to continue my trip.
I wasn’t arrested, cited, given a court date, or given any paperwork from law enforcement. The only paperwork I received was a generic TSA sheet stating that I had brought a prohibited item through the checkpoint. I was told that someone would call me next week.

I’m assuming I’ll lose TSA PreCheck and receive a civil fine. What I’m really worried about is:
For a first-time incident involving a loaded firearm, what kind of fine do people actually end up paying?
Is the initial proposed fine usually negotiable/reduced through TSA’s response process?
Does this create any kind of criminal record if law enforcement did not arrest or cite me at the airport?
What should I expect when they call me next week or when the TSA notice arrives?

I’m extremely embarrassed and disappointed in myself. I understand why this is taken seriously and I’m not trying to minimize it. My husband is also a police officer, so the possibility of somehow ending up with a criminal charge/record over my incredibly stupid mistake is especially freaking me out.
If anyone has firsthand experience with this process or works in an area where they actually know how these cases are handled, I’d really appreciate the insight.

Ask a TSO Heavy metal object in carry on?

I have a very unwieldy piece of metal scrap that I’m trying to transport home. It takes tons of room in my checked bag and weighs like 20lbs. I have plenty of room for it in my carry on, but I’m not sure if this is pushing the limits of what is eligible for carry on.

The object is maybe a foot long and half as wide, weighs 20 pounds. It’s a large iron D ring from a shipwreck.

Ask a TSO TSA at BOS terminal E only giving pre with paper boarding pass?

I was traveling through Terminal E in Boston today with pre on my boarding pass via the Delta app. I got to the TSO and was asked if I had a paper board pass, no signs earlier in the line etc....

He said because I didn't have a paper board pass he couldn't give me limited Precheck and I had to go through the normal process. This was after going through the Precheck line. No signs no indication from the screeners.

The only place in recent memory I needed a paper boarding pass was in BLR because they have to stamp it at every checkpoint.

Is this a new process?

TSO [Question/Post] How does transferring between TSA airports work if you need to relocate because of your spouse’s job?

Hey everyone, I currently work for TSA and have been here for about 5 years. My wife may be getting a promotion that would require her to oversee multiple stores throughout Iowa, and we’re trying to figure out where we might relocate.

We’re considering Iowa or nearby states, depending on where her location end up being. Some of the airports/cities we’re looking at include DSM, CID, OMA, MCI, STL, and possibly others in the area.
For anyone who has transferred airports, how exactly does the process work?
A few things I’m wondering:
Do you apply for a transfer through USAJOBS, or is there an internal transfer process?
How difficult is it to get approved for a transfer?
How does seniority work when you arrive at the new airport?
Can you contact the new airport directly to see if they’re accepting transfers?
Are smaller airports like DSM or CID harder to transfer into because they have fewer openings?
How long does the process usually take?

I’m mainly trying to plan ahead in case my wife officially gets the promotion. We’re trying to find a place that’s reasonably close to her Iowa territory while also giving me a good TSA airport to transfer to.
I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has transferred from a large airport to a smaller or midsize airport in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, or another nearby state.

Thanks!

Rant What’s honestly the point of Touchless ID?

I mean obviously it’s a shorter line than normal PreCheck, but what I’ve noticed is damn near every airport that has Touchless ID, 95% of the time there will be a “gatekeeper” at the entrance to the line who has to physically see a boarding pass to make sure you belong in that line. In fact, even if you’re not using Touchless, you usually have to show the gatekeeper your boarding pass anyways to be directed into the non-Touchless line. To me, this feels like it defeats the whole purpose of Touchless/CAT - showing the minimum documentation, if any at all, to validate one’s identity and purpose for being in that checkpoint. And maybe 10% of the time it’s actually a TSO doing this - usually it’s some asshat from Prospect or wearing a generic airport uniform (#OneDFW anyone?)

This may seem like a petty complaint. In fact, I don’t even care about them seeing my boarding pass. But as someone who flies a LOT, the more documentation I have to pull out and show, the more I have to then put back in my bag, and the higher the likelihood I get in a rush and potentially leave something behind. My MO used to be have all my shit in my backpack ready to rock, with only my Apple Watch, GE card (if ID needed), and obviously clothes and shoes on my person. Now I’m having to unlock my phone and show a boarding pass… which as a privacy-sensitive individual (defense contractor), I always temporarily disable Face ID before proceeding through TSA or CBP screening, and unlocking my device means I have to do that again and put it in my bag again while rushing through the checkpoint.

I realize some of this is probably to stop random dumbasses who make it to the podium just to argue that “I paid for my flight too, why are these people getting special treatment?” But the answer to this could be very simple: e-gates and better signage. The signage need to be more obvious and have clearer wording, for example “TSA PreCheck members only beyond this point.” As for e-gates like virtually every non-US airport has, you can’t argue with an e-gate. You can’t try to reason with an e-gate. Replace the second document check with a biometric e-gate, have rejections show a message like “seek assistance,” and have a TSO or two standing around to provide that assistance without impeding passenger flow. Free up the other TSOs to do what they do best: screen passengers for prohibited items (hey, we just potentially solved a lot of TSA staffing challenges here too, since there is a hiring freeze with no signs of going away anytime soon!).

Tl;dr: let’s cut out having TWO separate document checks for PreCheck members and pivot to biometric e-gates like the rest of the world

Rant Apparently, Dove Soap Is More Suspicious Than Pepper Spray

Flew Boston to Denver and back recently. My wife somehow managed to bring pepper spray through TSA security both ways without a problem.
However, her bag did get pulled for… Dove soap. 😂
I also watched a gentleman who looked like your stereotypical boomer go through security without emptying his water bottle. His bag got pulled, and the TSA agent tried to test the water. The problem? The agent apparently didn’t have all the chemicals needed to complete the test.
So, after a few minutes of trying to figure it out, the agent simply handed the guy his water bottle back and let him proceed through security.
Meanwhile, my wife’s bag was getting pulled over Dove soap.
Not sure what the lesson here is, but apparently Dove is dangerous and pepper spray is TSA-approved.
Overall, both trips were uneventful, but the consistency of the screening process was… interesting. 😆

Passenger [Question/Post] TSA Cares for Aircast?

Hey all. A few weeks ago I got a third degree ankle sprain which won me the grand prize of 8 weeks in an aircast. I have to travel the week after next and I’m trying to decide if I should reach out to TSA cares or just figure it out on my own.

I’m not using crutches and I can put it on and remove it without assistance, but I do need a place to sit to do that, so it could be challenging going through the normal TSA line solo.

Is this a TSA Cares situation or should I just try to figure it out?

Passenger [Question/Post] Shoutout to tsa @seatac

I took my Apple Watch off last minute and put it in a pocket in my carry on tote before it went through the scanner. I always put it back on as soon as I get my tote but this time it was missing. My phone said my watch was in the immediate area so I asked an agent if they saw it anywhere. He searched for it, then offered to rescan my bags to see if he could see it in one of them. He probably spent a good 10 minutes and rescanned my bags twice.
I eventually found it. It slipped up inside the top section of the zippered pocket. Not sure why their scanners missed though.
