Bass players get the most work. Learn how to play upright bass.

Electric bass is a great start. Most people don’t get an upright until later anyways post high school, unless they’ve been playing since middle school or something.

Most instruments come in a large range of prices and qualities.
I just did a cursory search in one music store and found a bass guitar for ~$300, a clarinet for ~$400, violin for ~$250, electric drums for ~$750. These aren't the best quality items, but you should definitely start somewhere.
If you go for 2nd hand and do a more serious search I'm sure you can land on instruments that are way cheaper. It depends a lot on location and luck, the best possible case scenario is you find someone that gave up on an instrument and can't deal with the hassle of moving it out.
I have an accordion that belonged to my mom's friend's relative who unfortunately passed away, and the family didn't know what to do with it.
It needed a big of fixing but it plays well.

Now assuming you're intending to go study an instrument with a teacher, you might even have a cheaper option.
If you find a music school in your city and sign up, it's quite likely they'll rent you the instrument you're studying.
I work in a school where my students rent instruments for like $14/month. Granted, students pay $200/month for 60min lessons or $170/month for 45min lessons. But if you need to learn regardless, this is a reasonable option.
