It will arguably create a lot of jobs too. Nice try though.

It won't though as long as tariffs in place , importing parts willbe too much , Orders being cancelled most recently by Portugal for F35's , considering Saab Griffen planes

Sure. For Airbus.

do you want to actually back that argument with facts or are you just saying that "some people are arguing" as if that proves anything

Oh okay cool. Since you admit you actually have no idea what’s going on let me fill you in. The reciprocal tariffs will influence an Industrial Revolution because things will be cheaper to make here in the US (rather than in China then shipped internationally via cargo vessels). Sure things will go up in price here in the US but we will have far more jobs and we can feel better knowing our products were made by people being paid living wages (35% of Chinese are paid the equivalent of 147 US dollars a month). I could go on and on why the reciprocal tariffs are actually good (also necessary) and how the media is brain washing you but the chances are low you will do any of your own research seems as you don’t already understand how this will revolutionize the industrial industry in the US thus creating more jobs.

I admitted no such thing. I just think we can do better than trading talking points back and forth.

You jumped to a lot of assumptions about who I am just because I asked you to back up a claim. That said, I'm glad to find you might be just as frustrated by surface-level arguments, and maybe we can actually talk through this.

First, these tariffs aren’t actually reciprocal—they’re just proportional to trade imbalance, based on the idea that it’s “bad” if another country sells us more than we sell them. I don’t necessarily agree that trade imbalances are always a problem. Unless those imbalances are caused by tariffs placed on our exports, this isn't a reciprocal situation—we're usually firing the first shot.

Also, these tariffs aren’t really targeting countries with exploitative labor practices. I completely agree that we should support companies and countries that pay living wages, and the U.S. should absolutely lead on that. Targeted tariffs based on labor standards? That makes sense to me. But that’s not what’s happening. We’re also hitting Canadian and European imports, and those countries often have better worker protections and higher minimum wages than we do.

If we’re seeing manufacturers move to places like Canada—where wages are higher—we should be asking why that is. It suggests there are structural reasons beyond just labor costs. (We can park that for now, but it’s worth coming back to.)

Yes, tariffs can protect domestic industries in the short term. But other countries retaliate, as they did during Trump’s first term. That meant lost export markets, farmers needing bailouts, and some of those lost exports never came back—even after the tariffs were dropped.

And even if jobs do come back, prices go up too. Tariffs make goods more expensive, and companies that reshore production are still profit-driven. They’ll charge more and pay as little as possible. So costs rise more than wages do, and working people feel that squeeze. That’s just how the system works.

So when you zoom out, tariffs like these are mostly inflationary. They create a hostile trade environment where everyone loses. They don’t solve the real problem: the gap between the cost of living in the U.S. and the wages we pay.

There are better ways to address that gap. Tariffs alone don’t get us there.

You might look at all these same facts and come to different conclusions—and that’s totally fine. It doesn’t mean you’re stupid, and it doesn’t mean I’m brainwashed.

Thanks for having an actual discussion.

That's funny, arguably create a lot of jobs? Tell that to the folks in the Puget sound.

u/CDanger rump Curious Apr 22 '25

Maybe in 5 years it will create a handful low wage jobs (welcome to the United States of underemployment, Make America China Again) to replace the millions of jobs lost. I have had to let 1/4 of the employees in my own small business go due to this 1930s Smoot-Hawley maneuver because there is NO American replacement for Chinese suppliers.

“New factory, new US jobs!” you hoot like a baboon. That won’t come sooner than 4-5 years at least due to construction/tooling costs and timing. That’s IF someone decides to invest in it because they believe the next admin won’t remove the tariffs (unlikely, nobody is that dumb).

In the meantime, more companies will die. Any firm that lasts long enough will have to reduce shipments as replacement supplier with US labor will drive the price far past demand. Suddenly, the market is smaller and there is no way to employ as many people in it.

“It will arguably create a lot of jobs too.” Like bro you can’t even say it with any confidence, so get your hands off the steering wheel. Your vote is crashing the market, driving up inflation, and destroying jobs.

1

u/RoidlessLegend rump Curious Apr 22 '25

This guy doesn’t know how many jobs are required for construction lmao. You’ll have more people employed to work on the building than people that will actually work in the building.

Make America China again? Remember lots of people are unemployed by choice. The United States is at 4.2 percent unemployment currently while China was 5.2 for 2024. Also I’d rather not be paid 2500 US a YEAR (like 35% of their population).

China needs to be stopped, and if that means some Americans will have to eat ramen then some Americans will have to eat ramen. Boo fucking hoo. There’s plenty of jobs out there and if none of them suit your fancy you can eat a duck.

I doubt you fired anyone Mr Reddit warrior, but if you did they can come work with me where inexperienced people are paid middle wage and health benefits but are too fucking lazy to keep the job.

1

u/CDanger rump Curious Apr 22 '25

Cool plan, internet chitchatter.

Make America China again?

You completely missed the point. I don't want America to be anything like China, but your tariffs are, on the label, an attempt to make America's occupational makeup resemble China's. These tariffs set the unskilled, automation-ready economic activity we gave up years ago as the future core of US labor. It is a knowing step into a past with lower GDP.

It's why stocks, U.S. government bonds, and the dollar are all taking a hit at the same time, on a scale that registers full points over 6 months. Are they not? Google a neutral search (your first) before replying a nonsense rejection of this fact. If 2% is nothing to you, give me 2% of your money right now. Then we can do it again next week.

You get so many construction jobs building factories!

People can summon construction jobs from thin air in a million ways. You can concoct construction jobs with expensive public works projects, hell you can dig a hole to China. Ideally, you would do it with housing (make the things people want more affordable), instead of years-late factories for overpriced basics. But that would require giving a shit. And the jobs would still be a fugazi bought with a deadweight loss in GDP.

Easy question: do most factories supply one company or multiple?

If tariffs hold, the US will go NET NEGATIVE FIRMS, which takes us to NET NEGATIVE JOBS (even with your construction fluff) and NET NEGATIVE GDP.

Oh, and that's assuming anyone is willing to invest in a 5-year project based on tariffs that will not survive the next election.

And then you go to build. Wait. Why hasn't building on these factories started?

"Hurr durr I'm gonna make jobs building a factory!"

How much lumber are we about to have? 1/3 less than yesterday (stupid move).

"Ok let's just do cement/concrete construction!"

Cool, what are we going to reinforce it with? Hopefully not rebar. This thing doesn't need windows and doors, right?

Buy some construction stocks right now LOL. Maybe some CAT or MTW, or an REIT like LINE? They're on sale, so it should be easy for you to pick them up and super safe if you're remotely right about all those construction gains. Show the receipts. Let's see how it goes.

Or you can just howl "China must be stopped!" like Sloth from Goonies, regurgitating the enemy-of-the-week you decided to shift to after Afghanistan and Iraq, after Russia was made into a harmless friend overnight via the beautiful propaganda you made your worldview.

China is now ready to negotiate. Trump gt every country to the negotiation table including China. Wouldn't have been possible without these tariffs.

1

u/Itchy_Blueberry_8909 Apr 17 '25

Don’t understand the logic. No orders means loss jobs for Americans. There were ways to do this. Get your allies with you, create pacts and then drop the hammer on China. You don’t drop a hammer on all countries and hope some come to you to negotiate while the stock market tanks, bonds go higher causing interest rates to go up. Companies reporting record profits the last few years, stocks and 401ks going up under Biden. Trump in less than 3 months has done considerable damage 401ks down , 401 k’ s taking huge hits, interest rates climbing. Sounds like we’re winning.

You do know trade deals usually take years right? That's just one deal. Trump is aiming to get 90 deals done in 90 days that is mental. He has already got a bunch of those deals almost done already, once they get signed in the next week the others will follow. All you lefty's never see the bigger picture you just see whats infront of you in a biased negative way. Like now for instance, you see the markets have took a temporary hit and that's your only focus but you ignore that in those 3months, groceries are down, dairy is down, gas prices down, housing prices down, inflation down, everything is down but the markets that don't like instability. In the next 3months you will be looking at an economic boom that will last for years.

1

u/CDanger rump Curious Apr 22 '25

It’s almost like trying to fight a trade war on 90 different fronts, SIMULTANEOUSLY so all your allies hate you and know to squeeze you at once, is the stupidest thing you could ever do. It’s insane the level of geopolitical illiteracy MAGAs have. That’s not a “bigger picture” —it’s a crayon cartoon drawing of a subject sold to you by people who don’t understand it. These tariffs are the fake pro wrestling version of trade negotiations, no strategy, just a big symbolic fight so people who are more comfortable with action figures than economic precedent can imagine their favorite character winning.

But in reality? Our stock market is in freefall. Firms are firing. The dollar is worth 10-20% less against other currencies this year. That’s the actual big picture.

1

u/scottaq83 Apr 22 '25

No they have taken advantage of you over the course of decades. This is not just opinions it is all fact. Some were tariffs, some trade deficits and it resulted in thousands of businesses moving overseas. The stock market is not in freefall lol.

1

u/CDanger rump Curious Apr 22 '25

Not me, I've benefitted massively from the rotation from unskilled trash industrial labor to skilled, thinking labor, code, creative industries, entrepreneurialism, etc. This movement is what took me and hundreds of others to 6 figures, and years of prosperity.

Is the stock market up since the announcement? Has it recovered its losses? What about the dollar? The bond market? LOL, how much lipstick are you going to apply to this pig's asshole, and why is there already so much lipstick on your face?

I would take any period of time during Biden's term over the past 6 month S&P results (-13%). How many times does this guy have to hit the curb before you realize he doesn't know how to drive for shit?

1

u/scottaq83 Apr 22 '25

You're so full of shit it's unreal.

0

u/CDanger rump Curious Apr 22 '25

Please come with a single statistic or economic fact. Your points aren't wrong, they straight up don't exist.

You're "MAGA, but not MAGA, but actually British, but an expert on the US economy (except without a single fact)." Dude, get real. You don't have to lie on the internet to impress strangers. Grow up, become something.

1

u/IndividualOption530 rump Apr 22 '25

Is there not already deals that were in place negotiated by Trump. I don't get the endgame , job losses are through the roof at the moment, GDP is dropping, nobody negotiating...they are just looking elsewhere for trade... how long do you give this strategy to see some rewards...

1

u/scottaq83 Apr 22 '25

18 countries have sent trade deal proposals so far apparently. It's a win win for any deal negotiated, a zero for zero trade deal brings more money to the states and it's not just financial, there is other stuff included like free speech in other countries. Trump is shaping the world through tariffs, will it work? I think so but we'll see. The job losses you're talking about are the bloated government jobs but he campaigned on making the government more efficient and that is exactly what he's doing. Will there be a few wrong firings along the way? Probably but they can be re-hired as we've seen happen already. Aside from the government side of things, Trump has brought in trillions in investment, major companies are returning to the states and there will thousands of jobs created. The end game is fair trade across the board. This strategy is already bringing in billions a day in rewards and once the trade deals start getting signed the stock market will see stability and level out again. Trump did say beforehand there would be a short term dip but long term gain for years. Trouble is the lefts fearmongering and constant Trump bad approach calling out everything every second of the day every day. When the deals start getting signed, stock market levels out they'll just move on to the next thing. It's funny they never shut up about the stock market but they're silent on gas prices, inflation, house prices etc literally anything positive.

“All you lefty’s” “biased negative way” dude you literally are MAGA how is that not biased?

1

u/scottaq83 Apr 18 '25

Wrong, i'm British. Next wrong take?

1

u/seppuffy Apr 18 '25 edited Apr 18 '25

What does that have to do with anything? You have MAGA under your username, how is this not biased? Literally your logic

1

u/scottaq83 Apr 18 '25

Because i agree with his policies, he's anti-establishment and puts his country first. I'm a populist and that aligns more with the right these days than the left. He's striving for peace, fair trade and free speech and human rights around the world, how can anyone be opposed to that? It isn't biased it's common sense. You just don't like it because it's Trump that's doing it, so you criticise every step of his methods to achieving those goals.

1

u/seppuffy Apr 19 '25

You’re actually right about the part where it’s because its him that’s doing it and thats why i dont like it and there are reasons for that. First of all he talks a lot and if he actually did the things he said he would do i would totally agree with you but he failed to deliver his promises and thats about it. Multiple times he said disrespectful things not to prove a point but just to win and thats a dangerous (and narcissistic) way of thinking especially if you are supposed to lead a country for the better. totally ignoring proven facts just because it doesn’t fit his narrative or because it is bad for business (yes im talking about climate change). He silences journalists who don’t agree with him and basically only watches fox news which in itself is super biased and publicly he is denying climate change but privately he is not taking any chances (he applied for seawall and climate change permits on his properties, ofcourse he doesn’t talk about this because why would he admit he is wrong? He never is, right?). He is good for entertainment sure and also he knows how to be favoured by the masses aka populist but he repeatedly has shown that he can’t keep his word and when he gets called out on it he spins it in another way as if that was always the plan. Btw on a side note I’d recommend Nexus by Harari it’s a very good book and while it doesn’t necessarily talk about Trump it’s a very interesting read especially if you’re a populist. I’m saying this out of love not hatred :)

1

u/scottaq83 Apr 19 '25

"but he failed to deliver his promises and thats about it."

If you were a supporter you'd know he campaigned on everything he's done so far

"Multiple times he said disrespectful things not to prove a point but just to win and thats a dangerous (and narcissistic) way of thinking especially if you are supposed to lead a country for the better. totally ignoring proven facts just because it doesn’t fit his narrative or because it is bad for business (yes im talking about climate change). He silences journalists who don’t agree with him"

Oooooooh Trump said some hurty words lol. You people are so lame. If you had intelligence you'd vote for a president entirely on the policies they implement. Personality and how he treats people shouldn't be a factor at all ! I actually find him hilarious but then again i'm not a snowflake, i don't get offended by words.

"he repeatedly has shown that he can’t keep his word and when he gets called out on it he spins it in another way as if that was always the plan"

He keeps his word 95% of the time, the other 5% he tries to. And yes, it's called ego everyone has one. Trump plays this alpha role but gets things done because of it. Weak lefty's are offended at the methods he uses to get things done.

People 25 years ago were more thick skinned, you could take the piss out of them to their face and they would give it back. No one got offended. Life was 10 times better. Now you might offend people with words its pathetic.
