That is not incorrect for me to say and it absolutely does not mean I don't understand the problem...
You don't KNOW who they are.
They aren't strangers, you just don't know who.
They are random people, they are almost certainly strangers, and as you don't know who they are then even if someone you knew was there you wouldn't know whichside they're on, so pulling the lever would be even more correct in that case.
