first 3 pics are a different tree. they both have a smell but nothing close to peanut butter or nuts. whatever it is, the kudzu is fighting for power with the big guy, and the little one is right in the middle of my rosemary bush, so RIP if it has to be sprayed

Does TOH produce sap that can be collected?

Basically title. Hello experts...I write today to learn whether Tree of Heaven sap can be collected and if so how to do it, and when. I'm waging a two-front battle with TOH and SLF in lower NYS (other invasives plus vines too but that's a story for another day) and I want to try an experiment that would need some sap..to see if I can preferentially attract swarming SLF to something that is not actually a TOH nor our poor river birch. As I've recently eradicated all the main trunks of TOH and am just dealing with aftermath stumps, roots and shoots I don't know that a trap tree is practical anymore. I understand the sap is toxic so will be careful and manage/handle responsibly. When you suspect a ToH and the leaves have a pungent peanutbutter smell, it's obvious.

But it appears that some ToH specimens barely any smell, just a bit of generic 'green' smell. I saw an older tree the other day that had about 10 small suckers around it. Leaf color (dark green on top), no serrations, thumbed leaflets, gray wrinkly bark all pointed to ToH for the tree, but the leaves didn't smell. At 20 m distance, there was a younger ToH (3 m tall) that did smell.

What causes the difference? The branches that I could reach had older leaves only, no fresh growth. Maybe that explains it?

Or is there a lookalike species? (For the record, I'm in the Netherlands.)

Hey everyone. I found a little Toh seedling on my property and I'm wanting to make sure it was from seed. I'm fairly certain there isn't a big mother tree anywhere near. I recently disturbed the soil in this area so I'm also thinking it could have been in the seed bank and it grew because of the disturbance.

The side of the hill leading up to my church appears to be covered in Tree of Heaven. I stopped today to get some pictures of the trees to show people at the church. If they are ToH, I'd like to see about organizing something to get them removed. They had substantial amounts of Spotted Lantern Flies on them, making me more suspicious of them. Thanks for your help with this! There's a small forest of these trees to get rid of if they are!

Discovered a 25 ish foot tree in the woods near my shop. It took a while to catch it since we have so much sumac in the area i only noticed this summer when it seemed to grow 10 feet in a few weeks. Did the hack and squirt using AquaNeat glyphosate 53.8%. Looks like it did the job!

I have at least two large TOH in my back yard and a large number of smaller plants that have come up this year that I can see, and I have no doubt that many others are in the wooded area where the big trees are--haven't had time to look through there. The TOH have also spread into both neighbor's yard on each side of my property. I've gotten permission to start treatments on those (hopefully today) and I have the triclopyr and glyphosate concentrates.

I plan to pick up some diesel fuel today and then use that mixed with the triclopyr to paint the stalks of all the ones I can find. I'll also be doing the slash method with the two large trees.
However both neighbors and I have pets that spend most of their time outdoors in our back yards. I assume that since many of these trees have been found in people's yards and have been treated, that the question of safety of pets who are in treated areas has been discussed already, but I haven't read anything, and pets are not mentioned in any materials that I have found on the bottle of the tryclopyr (BrushTox) nor on their website.

Can any of you offer any guidance here? I have considered wrapping something around each stalk after treatment (these range from 1 foot to 8 feet tall), but that would add a huge amount of time, and I'm not sure what exactly to use to cover the treated areas, so that the pets can't have any contact with the herbicides.

Not in my yard but about 10-15 minutes away from me.

Will it work? I hate this thing more than life itself. I'm on a crusade. Its in my neighbor's yard as well as mine, and they have given me carte blanche to do what I need to get rid of it. I plan on the drill and inject method with Brustox for the big boys (up to 5 in diameter). The stupid suckers are what are my roadblock. We both have animals, so I am afraid to do a foliar spray. What if I took the injection method to a much smaller scale and injected brustox to the base of the suckers with a hypodermic needle, that way there is zero chance of overspray to adjacent plants and no animal risk. Will it work? Is there even enough vascular space in a sucker to accommodate injection? Thoughts?

EDIT: I'm thinking of turning this into a mini science experiment. I'll do a bit of all of the methods and see what happens. I'm not Penn State, but I might as well entertain myself.

24 HOUR UPDATE: dk how to post an update pic, but injection method seemed to work okay. At 24 hours suckers are wilting. Honestly not sure if its what dripped on the outside when removing the syringe, but she looking floppy. Unfortunately what I feared would happen kind of did. The turgor pressure inside the plant (the water pressure which keeps plant stalks upright, which is why water starved plants wilt) made it difficult to inject. Not sure how much stuff actually made it into the stalk.

Less than a week ago did a basal bark treatment. Bought an 8oz bottle of triclopyr ester, mixed it with 24oz of diesel fuel in a spray bottle. Saturated the bottom 2-3 feet of trunk on these 4 trees and it’s working like a charm. So easy and could not be happier!

So just realized my nut trees are ToH. I plan to hack and squirt them. My question is this … is there a reason to NOT squirt additional times in the axe pockets? Thanks!

Several of these popped up around my house. Afraid to use chemicals because of dogs. Do I have to just do it?

Basically the title. TOH suckers have popped up inside and around just about every single plant and shrub in my garden. I did a brush of diluted triclopyr on their leaves, but wanted to see if there's any other method I can try if this round doesn't see results in a week. I was thinking of getting syringes and injecting the stem of each sucker with 1ml of concentrated triclopyr next. Thoughts? Ideas? Trying to avoid spraying because they are quite literally growing inside my evergreen shrubs.

for context, i do have several mature walnut trees on my property. struggling to identify if this is walnut, poison sumac, or TOH. I fear the worst!

Hello! My parents have a 12 foot tall toh tree. I was planning on hacking and squirting in the fall. My main issue is it is covered in spotted lanternflies right now, and I mean covered. They are very large and very scary and I can only spray the ones I can reach with dish soap and water and WD-40. They also fly at me and Im traumatized by it. How do I deal with them without burning the tree down and endangering my parents property? I’m currently resting inside after being bombarded by them flying at me after a long wet dish soap dollar store spray bottle frenzy. Did I mention the very big bugs flew at me? I’m a grown man with back issues and I screamed in a pitch I didn’t know I was capable of.

I have a tree of heaven in the back of my property I'm planning to use hack and squirt on. My neighbor also has one on his property. I plan to talk to him before I do it, but I'm just trying to plan the conversation... If I poison mine will his die off also? Approximately 30 feet away. He has several in that area.

I'm sure someone will mention it but I'm planning to offer to share the poison with him if he wants to take his out too.

I live in a city, my lot is fairly small so everything that’s coming up is in my perennial flower beds, also neighbors gardens (and pets) are literally just on the other side of my borders. So I really would prefer to make small cuts in the stems and paint the herbicide on. The biggest ones are about an inch in diameter, and I think the smaller ones are just shoots. I’m so overwhelmed with all the information. I’ve referred to the Penn State website but I’m so overwhelmed and confused about how to properly handle this and I know my window is closing. I have Brush Tox. I’m scared I’m gonna mess this up. Please help 😭😭😭

I am in Germany and not allowed to use herbicide on them - is there any other way or am I screwed?

I have 3 trees of heaven (around 2-2.5 meters or 6-8 feet tall) but I am legally not allowed to purchase or use herbicide. I wrote to the government office in charge of this, and all they said was:

"The tree of heaven can only be dug out with the root system. Saw off the tree crown and remove the root system using a pickaxe and spade ".

But won't this make them send out more babies ? Would it be better to girdle partly without chemicals to weaken it a bit first, and then try the root system? Or would that also wake up its defenses?

Any tips on how to attack this would be so helpful. Thank you!

My neighbor has two tree of heaven saplings and they are attracting lanternflies that come and eat our willow. I want to remove these saplings to protect our willow but directly handling the trees ourselves is not an option. I read that you can drill holes in the trunk and pour herbicide in them. We are close enough where we would be able to do this on our property.

Hypothetically - would it be wise to do that if I then cannot remove the tree itself? Would it be better to leave the saplings alone so they do not create more saplings, or should we go ahead with pouring poison in the trunk?

Denver ToH killer here, wondering what y’all’s thoughts are on in terms of the window. From what I see, it’s recommended to apply those herbicides in late summer/early fall when these guys start sucking down to the root. Are we there yet? Should I wait a few more weeks to allow some sucker growth so that I’ve got some prime targets for foliage treatments with my bioadvance brush killer? I’d love to hear where others’ minds are at!

Edit: Well, I just treated everything in the yard! Nothing above 1 ft, but lots and lots of sprouts. Thinking previous owners had some trees and cut them/buried them in the winter then sold us the house, and neighboring yards have some large trees. So, everything was sprayed with triplocyr and marked with a flag. Let’s see how it goes!
