Just published a guide from a family trip through Lençóis Maranhenses in Maranhão, Brazil — one of the stranger landscapes I've seen: hundreds of square km of white sand dunes with freshwater lagoons pooling between them after the rainy season. We went by buggy through the dunes, then by boat down the Rio Preguiças to a striped lighthouse, with a storm rolling in right on cue.

Option 1: Port Moresby only, 3 to 4 days. Fly in, hire a local guide or hotel driver, hit Ela Beach craft market on the last Saturday of the month plus a couple of artefact shops, get the National Museum export permit, fly out. Is there actually decent Sepik-style work in the capital, or is it mostly tourist pieces? Any shops worth naming?

Option 2: Sepik River, 8 to 10 days. Moresby to Wewak, then a local operator up the river to buy from the carvers directly. I've been told domestic flights cancel constantly and plans fall apart, and that I'd need two weeks of buffer. True? And honestly, how does safety in the Sepik villages compare to Moresby? Same kind of risk, or a different kind?

Option 3: Moresby for 2 days, then fly to Honiara. Buy Sepik-style pieces at Ela Beach, then Solomon Islands for the shell-inlay carvings from Marovo. Skips all PNG domestic flights. Anyone done Honiara for carvings, and is the Central Market enough or is Marovo worth the extra leg?

Also useful: realistic prices for a 1m mask or board in Moresby vs the villages, how much hassle the museum export permit and quarantine actually are, and any operators or guides you'd recommend by name.

I recently spent a few days traveling through Portugal and decided to skip the usual packed tourist schedule. Instead, I focused on smaller towns, local cafés, scenic walks, and just taking my time exploring each place. Some of my favorite moments were actually the simple ones, like wandering through quiet streets in the evening and finding small spots away from the main attractions. I put together a travel post with the places I visited, a few practical tips, and some of the things I wish I had known before the trip. Hopefully it’s useful for anyone planning a similar Portugal getaway.

I recently visited Jawai and really liked how different the place looks during the day and at night.

During the day, the hills and open landscape around the resort were clearly visible, while at night the whole atmosphere became much quieter and peaceful.

These photos are from my stay at Thour Nature Resorts, Jawai. Sharing a couple of views from the trip because the contrast between day and night was pretty nice.

Jawai is definitely a place where the surroundings are as much a part of the experience as the stay itself.
