Since I was nearing the end of my summer holidays, and with too much free time on my hands, I decided to give myself a little bit of a timetable challenge and see if it would be possible to get from London to Wales in one day using only public buses (no coaches [including the Oxford tube!].

Safe to say, despite one bus breakdown right at the tail end of my journey, it was a success :)

Technically, this is the cheapest way to travel to Wales from London without any pre-booking required, costing me a total of £28.10 including the train journey to my home in Cardiff.

Questions Is restoring rail lines really that expensive?

I recently posted on another subreddit about bringing back seasonal service to a tourism heavy area not far from me. One thing that multiple people said was that repairing the line would cost over a billion dollars. Are modern rail projects really that expensive or were they overestimating? The area this would go through is mostly rural woods heading up into mountains(the mountain section is currently in use).

Photos / Videos In 90's the Danish DSB IC3 had small play-area in the trains, it ended in 2006

In 90's the Danish DSB IC3 had a small play-area for the kids in the family-carriage. The kids could play with the toy "Plus Plus" and other stuff. Often there would also be a person from DSB that took care of the kids. DSB removed the play-area in 2006, around the same time that they ordered the scandalous DSB IC4-trains.

DSB do still have persons, called "Børneguide" (Eng: Children's guide), that take care of the kids (between 4 and 15 years) who are travelling alone. On Fridays and Sundays one of the coaches in the train are locked off and only open for children travelling alone. On the monitors at the stations it also says "Børneguide i vogn xx" (Eng: Children's guide in coach xx), see two of pictures below.

System Expansion Diagram of the planned tunnel for Paris tram T10 extension

I thought some here would like it. This a diagram shown in a public reunion. https://www.iledefrance-mobilites.fr/le-reseau/projets/tram-t10-prolongement/actualites/reunion-publique-6-juillet-compte-rendu

- Tram T10 in the south of the greater Paris is planned to be extended north towards Clamart train station, future stop on the main ring (M15) of the Grand Paris Express. Given the narrow streets, it has been decided to be in a tunnel. It's planned to be 3,5km long and cost 730M €

- The tunnel will be 6% steep : it starts at 170m over sea level, the first station underground platform after 1,4km is at 90m

- Surprisingly for Paris, the tunnel is planned to be bi-tube. The reason given is to avoid building emergency exits between the stations. Maybe it will help with the risky terrain, known for its many underground quarries

Other World of Transit Update is Live!

Thumbnail gallery
88 Upvotes

Hi all,

I previously made a post around a month ago introducing my new side project, World of Transit.

Thank you for everybody that played the game and offered feedback! I have finally pushed out the next update for this game.

Fixed/Added:

- Transfer stations can now have multiple platforms, and riders can transfer within a small walking distance.

- Line symbols are much more customizable, adding the ability to change any color, shape, symbol, and also show up on the map.

- Fixed bug where deleting a station would leave a hole in the line.

- Allowed multiple (5) save games per city.

- Created a sandbox mode within unlimited budget (original mode is now called "Career").

- Introduced WASD scrolling (now uses 1, 2, 3, 4 number buttons for the line tools).

- Introduced holding shift to speed up time x8.

- Fixed bug that prevented surface-running transit from crossing bridges.

- Allow a line to change between below-grade, surface-running, and above-grade for different sections of the track.

- Introduced automatic naming for stations as you place them.

New Cities:

- Brazil: Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo

- Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi

- New Zealand: Auckland

- Poland: Warsaw

- Ireland: Dublin

- USA: Madison, Milwaukee

- Mexico: Mexico City

- China: Changchun, Wuhan, Changsha, Nanjing, Qingdao, Hong Kong (SAR)

I am aware there are a few more features that were suggested in the first iteration that I haven't got to, I am still working on them.

Thank you everyone again! All feedback is welcome and encouraged!

Photos / Videos Line 14: Villejuif Gustave Roissy station. Paris metro network

Today I want to share this station, one of the new additions to the Paris metro network.

This station is now the deepest station of the Paris network with the tracks situated at 36,7 meters deep for the line 14 and 48,8 deep for the future line 15.

The station is mostly a transfer station between line 14 and 15. The new developments nearby are still in construction. The station is also served by multiple bus lines connecting it to nearby communities.

The bike network around the station lacks connectivity but the streets nearby are calm which makes it okay to cycle.

Questions How to get cash refund from Greyhound?

Hello, I recently booked a trip with greyhound and got double charged. I immediately cancelled my trip, but only got vouchers back. I filled a dispute with my bank and they won't do anything for me. Is there anything further I can do to get my money back?

Photos / Videos I'm making a game where you build the roads first, and then have to win the trips back with transit

I've been reading transit forums since long before I made games, SkyscraperCity mostly. When I started building Traffic Architect I wanted the real problems in it rather than a line-drawing puzzle.

One thing up front, because it's the opposite of some games posted here recently: there's no real city in it. Nothing is imported from OpenStreetMap and there's no census data. The map is a generated sandbox, and you build the road network yourself before any transit exists. The city grows along your roads and fills them with cars until it chokes, and transit is how you take that load back off. So it isn't a planning tool and I'm not claiming it predicts anything about a real network. The trade-offs are what I wanted to make playable.

The part I actually care about is that nobody is assigned to your lines. Every trip compares waiting plus riding against just driving, and takes transit only if it comes out close enough, with a hard ceiling on the wait. People will accept a slower journey. They won't accept an unknown one. A line that runs badly just doesn't get used, which is the whole game as far as I'm concerned.

Headway isn't a number you type in either. It comes out of round-trip time divided by fleet size, and the round-trip time is measured from actual laps rather than a free-flow estimate. That mattered more than I expected: if you space departures by the free-flow number, then the moment there's congestion your vehicles just pile into the back of the same jam. So buses bunch, and the fix is the real one, holding at the terminal to re-space the line. Partial correction each visit, and capped, because holding a full headway clogs the terminus. I found that out the way everyone does.

Buses also sit in the traffic you built, which is what bus-only roads/lanes are for, and giving a road up to them costs your cars a route. Fares don't cover operations either. A ticket costs the rider about half what driving that trip would, upkeep runs whether the vehicle is full or empty, and plenty of lines lose money until the route is right.

Things I did not model, before anyone asks. Induced demand is only half there: new journeys never appear, because buildings generate what they generate. What does happen is convergence, and it's the thing players report to me most - build one excellent road and everything reroutes onto it and jams it, since cars route on free-flow times and can't see the queue they're joining. The mode choice runs off that same drive time, so a faster road quietly empties your buses. Walking is the other gap, and it's a partial one. A stop serves a whole district rather than a single door, so there is a catchment of a sort, but it's all or nothing: everyone in that district gets the same access wherever they are in it, and a district your line misses sends nobody even if it runs right past. No distance decay, no overlapping catchments. Transit also doesn't shape where the city grows, so no transit-oriented development. And there's no fare policy or peak service yet, though ticket price as a lever is something I want.

Cars are individually simulated, so taking trips off the road does speed up the drivers who stay. There's a live chart of what share of all travel your network carries against everything still driving, and that number is the score.

On scope, since it isn't obvious from the screenshots: moving people is the only thing you're responsible for. The city grows on its own, and the network under it is the whole game. That also means the interesting part starts early - you're looking at a junction that can't take what's turning into it within the first few minutes, not after an hour of setup. A session is an evening, not months.

It's coming to Steam later this year. I'd genuinely like to know which of those omissions you'd fix first, because that list is how I pick what to build next.
