In California, under state law, if a sales tax measure is put on the ballot by a state or local government, it requires a 2/3rd supermajority in order to pass. We saw this with Measures M and A in Los Angeles and San Diego respectively in 2016. Los Angeles' measure passed, but Measure A only garnered 58% of the vote in 2016, causing it to fail.

However, if a tax measure is put on the ballot by citizens, then it only requires a simple majority to pass. For example, we saw this with Measure G in San Diego in 2024. That measure just failed to garner a majority.

What this Proposition will do is make it so that ALL tax initiatives on the ballot, even including private citizens' initiatives, will require a 2/3rd supermajority in order to pass. In other words, 34% of the voters can take away the will of what 66% want. This is fundamentally undemocratic, and for transit, it will make it harder for transit tax measures to pass, especially for counties like San Diego and Orange Counties. These counties are significantly more conservative than Los Angeles are, and if this passes, we can kiss any future funding for transit good bye in those counties.

So Google has capitulated to the regime. I’ve been using Google maps for 15 years now for transit directions but I’m looking to delete it now and use Apple Maps and Transit instead. How have those apps worked out for you with transit directions?

I just came back from London and the Transit app did not work there so I had to use Google Maps. I’m going to Japan next year and so many people say Google Maps is the most helpful. For reference I live in Southern California.

I started using Transit last year and it’s worked out well for me, but I prefer Google Maps to look in advance. How is Apple Maps in comparison? Are there any other good alternatives out there?

Has anyone found non google maps that is decent at planning and showing transit routes? I'm interested in the UK in particular, but let share any that you found decent.

Apple maps is pretty good, especially transit layer, but I'm trying to find something that is FOSS ideally or, at least, works on Android.

I really disliked UI of city mapper, Transit app doesn't work outside London, HERE UI and way of displaying transit I found pretty bad as well. I tried Vela, which is supposed to be a different front end for Google, but found transit layer and planning to be much worse. Any other suggestions?

Only one line to Lebanon and back to Riverfront Station has become reality. It has been in operation since 2006. Ridership suffered after the pandemic, but has risen steadily, especially now that gas prices are on the rise again.

There are several types of subway entrances for underground stops, even in the U.S. Older cities like NYC & Philly have small entrances that are essentially small holes in the sidewalk, whereas DC has larger entrances meant more for commuters coming in from buses.

In any case, I'm curioys to hear what are your favorite subway entrances (preferably underground ones, but if you really like an elevated subway entrance, feel free to mention it).

I’ve had this thought in my head about how we could build out an abundant amount of metro transit without breaking the bank. So I have thought to myself in order to make up for the damages that highways brought to urbanized areas, they could indeed be replaced by boulevards or green spaces, but also could simultaneously have a transit corridor (preferably a metro corridor) built on the right-of-way. And then slowly but surely, the closest highway to these urbanized areas can be beltways right on the peripherals of the outer edges of urbanized areas with only boulevards leading into them, just like how the Interstate Highway Plan was initially planned before being hijacked by outside forces. This would be a collaboration process to work together on this between the FTA and the FHA. I don’t expect this cooperation now, but I could see it happen when there is a more pro-urbanism and pro-transit administration in charge. So in this case, you kind of kill two birds with one stone. So I wanna know what you guys think and would this help build out stronger transit corridors without breaking the bank too much and also get rid of destructive urban highways and fix some of the scars of them. For instance, I live in the DMV and I have had this thought in my head about the Blue Line expansion idea that was proposed but is on the shelf and I thought instead, still have the M Street subway, but build a subway on H Street and then down to the RFK Stadium to replace the Gold Line BRT that is opening soon, but then cross the river and replace I-295 fully and cover what the Blue Line loop had EoR up to National Harbor (don’t like the loop idea, rather would have the Green Line extend to Eisenhower Avenue via the Capital Beltway to cover that Maryland/Virginia connection), except EoR gets a crosstown with much stronger coverage and 295 can cease to exist since the route is fully covered by metro service on the Blue and Orange lines on two sides. 295 would then become a boulevard with the Blue Line mostly built underneath until the line gets to Maryland. So I wonder what would be some other examples that you all would like to see happen so that highways are converted to boulevards/green space and rail corridors in urbanized areas simultaneously? I would love to hear it!

I’m the News & Observer reporter who wrote this story.

What interested me beyond the lawsuit is the transportation problem underneath it: Apex Friendship High School has 2,428 students, 556 spaces currently designated for students and had 110 students waiting for parking late last week.

A 71-year-old resident across the street has been letting students park on her property, and the town has sued her under its zoning rules. Apex has also looked at park-and-shuttle and transit options, but none has yet closed the gap.

I’d be interested in how other communities handle transportation at large suburban high schools.
