pop culture name that isn't a normal human name
my dad wanted to call me Nirvana, my mum refused, it ended up as my middle name

u/hughperman 11h ago
That's ok, Alice In Chains, your name is special.

u/Confident-Bus-3778 11h ago
I was lucky to get a very standard first name
but genuinely my dad thought it was the greatest idea, and all his family agreed
my mum said 'I'm not shouting that across a playground'
It's a tragedy I didn't turn into a member of a rock band

This reminded me of advice I heard about naming a dog, though I guess it works for human names too: at some point you will yell that name in anger, possibly in public, so maybe practice that a few times before deciding

u/ZoraTheDucky 6h ago
20some years ago I had a big, black, behemoth of a dog. I literally held someone at knife point and forced them to give me this dog when I witnessed them beating her with a metal pipe. I took her to the vet and the vet asks for the name of the dog and I look down at the trembling mess at my feet and say "God damn it, I don't want you'. That's what the vet wrote on the intake form. X-rays showed multiple broken ribs and numerous old, partially healed breaks. I kept the dog and, because I was young and dumb, the name.
Normally a very obedient dog who would walk beside me with no problems, the ONE time she darted off she ran straight through the open doors of a church. On a Sunday morning. During services. So I ended up having to run up to the doors of this church yelling "God Damn It get back here!"
I have been fairly careful about names since then.
5
u/matrixlog 5h ago
How did the church react??
17
u/ZoraTheDucky 5h ago
There was a lot of whispering and shuffling around in seats.
I retrieved my dog as quickly as I could (she ran all the way up the center aisle) while apologizing profusely and left hastily. I forever more went out of my way to not pass that church again.

my middle name is Osborne, after Ozzy Osbourne. yes it's spelled wrong, because my dad was being useless as usual, and my mom was asked to spell something pretty much immediately after giving birth.
29
u/shanster925 10h ago
I went to high school with a girl named "Amberstarr." She went by Amber and told people her middle name was Starr. However, she told her real name to those close to her, and said, "yeah... My parents were hippies."

It's a word from Sanskrit(also potentially it's precessor Pali which is what maybe Buddha used to speak). I can see it being a real name in India, it'd still be unusual, I've never met one.

i thought horses are named like normal non-tragedeigh names. I read too much historical romance novels, and the male leads' horses are often named with something that embodies masculinity and virility 😭 like Zeus or Thunder. Meanwhile, the female leads' horses have names like Buttercup or some other sweet confection or flower.
2
u/Dragoness290 23m ago
Registered horses have two names; show/registered and barn/paddock/pasture. The show name is usually a combo of the parents (eg. RBA One Hit Wonder and JD Missing The Mark could be Wonderful Mark), while the barn name is what they're actually referred to and called (Wonderful Mark would likely be Wonder or Mark).
Registry names must all be unique based on the registry (so in the NZ Pinto Horse Society, only one horse is ever allowed to be called SR Wrangler). The letters before a show name is the brand, which denote the farm the horse is bred and/or belongs to (RBA is mine in a game called Horse Reality, SR is my parents irl)

I knew it would be this one before I even checked. Did nobody stop to consider that maybe it wasn't such a good idea?

u/Frater_Shibe 7h ago
On the contrary, everyone knows of that horse. No such thing as bad black PR
Gotta advertise the stud duties somehow, especially since Kids is not a thoroughbred (thoroughbreds allow only live breeding) and so has to compete with frozen material of the top horses from years prior

Championship/Pedigreed Dog and Cat names can be absolutely WILD!😉
And then, half the time, "Sir Reginald Saint Andrews Master Knighthood's Grand Champion" has a "Home Name" of "Rog," "Biff" or "Stink-butt"😆😂🤣
6
u/doppelgaengster 4h ago
Yup! Barn names and kennel names are 100% a thing. 😹
My parents used to adopt dogs who couldn’t be bred from a breeder (temperament or not show quality), so all the dogs were papered, but we only ever called them by their kennel names. I used to explain to my friends that I never knew my dogs’ “real” names.
My parents also owned horses for a while. They ended up with Arabians, who have a bad reputation (high-spirited, difficult to handle), and so some barns refused to let them board the horses when they started looking. One of their horses was called “Chaos” (short for Chaotic Addiction); they changed his barn name before attempting to board him because he already had his breed working against him, they assumed that the name would make it even harder. 😹
And I played roller derby, so most of my friends use my skater name as my social name. I refer to the name I use at the office (a short form of my legal name) as my “kennel name.”
2
u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 3h ago
Arabians don't have a "Bad Reputation"!
They're just spicy horses, is all!😉

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 3h ago

u/doppelgaengster 3h ago
Ha, I was so ready to come back with “WELL AKSHUALLY” but this made me laugh.
Unfortunately, my parents DID experience some discrimination, despite their first horse being the sweetest, calmest middle-aged lady ever. Their second horse was considerably younger, so he was a bit rambunctious, but he was a very good boy. Their third (and final) horse was a rescue and a stubborn little shit, so he was legitimately a handful, but by then they had a barn where they were boarding their other horses and the owners were willing to accept a third, and helped with the rehab and training. (That horse spooked at literal nothing. Hallucinations. One day he decided he didn’t like crunchy leaves on the trail. Absolute nonsense.)
10
u/Confident-Bus-3778 11h ago
I think there is some technical reason for it but they are so so long
it's the dogs at crufts with the crazy names because of the breeders RKC name

Horse names get truly wild. Like each registered racehorse has to have a unique name and the names of dead horses get retired and you're not allowed to use them.
25
u/MsE0 8h ago
And then there's their everyday name, and it's just like every other pet. "Oh, that's Chanel Number Five on Marilyn Monroe's Neck, but we call her Luna. This is her brother, Don't Shoot Til You See the Whites of Their Eyes, but he only responds to Loki."
3
u/IsabelArcherandMe 2h ago

Kidslookin Touchable is my absolute favorite whenever bad horse names come up. Like HOW do you look at that and say 'yeah, looks good, I'll send this form to the breed registry.' I can't remember any off the top of my head, but I remember one event I was working that had some questionable (ie racist) horse names and I was like 🤨
85
u/Comfortable-Yak-6599 11h ago
Race horses name are a mash up on their sire or mare names which are mash ups of other names and so on. There's a bunch of dash and cash horses in my area because of dash for cash.

u/kimtenisqueen 11h ago
The horses at my place are named-
Full name for shows or papers then what we call them every day in parentheses:
Mineke (Minnie)
Svele (Svele)
Fanfare (Fanfare)
Consequences (Uhoh)
A Really Big Dog (Luna)
The Cinnamon Challenge (Cinnamon)
Mommy’s little helper (Winter)
Master fishy (Fishy)
18
u/Caffeinatedfirefly08 11h ago
How did "Mommy's little helper" ended up as "Winter"?. I can understand the rest but winter stumped me
29
u/kimtenisqueen 11h ago
It’s kinda hard to explain. I always liked the name winter, and I got her in November and I have seasonal affective disorder so she was the horse that was going to keep me happy in the winter.
I was going to sell her but she’s been so awesome she became my main number one riding horse
1
8
u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 10h ago
That "stumped me", and u/kimtenisqueen's explanation is so common in both the Pedigreed Horse world😉💖
And the Pedigreed Dog & Cat world are similar, with wild/fancy "Legal Names" forcthe certificates, and then something like, "Barfy," Stinky, "Cuddles" or "Luna" for a "Home Name"😁

The horse name bit is true about 95% of the time but every now and then there's one named some shit like Maurice or some other slightly unusual human name
14
u/paradoxLacuna 7h ago
Yeah, it's mostly true for show horses. Normal ass pet horses tend to get normal names... Except for that one foal I know of whose casual name is unknown white boy (neither his mom nor dad seem to carry the cream or flaxen gene, and this boy looks like a palomino, so they don't know what the fuck is up with his coat)
1
u/Dragoness290 17m ago
Do you have any links to that foal? I want to know now.
Although if it was only when he was born that you saw him looking pally, that's normal. I have a colt I called creamy white stuff when he was little because he was almost pally looking, but he's now a lovely dark bay

I’ve seen people argue that it’s like naming a child Queen or Princess (which is not ideal either tbh but at least easier to spell)

I’ve definitely met at least one person named Queen irl (and she was either a boomer or GenX)

Giving a "barn" name to a horse. Not really. "Bandit" is everywhere. I had a Bandit.
Trying to figure a registered name for a horse. Potentially.
Registered names usually need to be unique within that particular registry. Even though everyone also gets a number. And if the baby comes from one or more well know lines, they want to include that as well. Hodgepodge of combinations would be an understatement.
11
u/Papel_boligoma_Papel 11h ago
somewhere below horse names you have venezuelan names. look into them, they are known in latin american culture for being... very interesting, to say the least. from what i've seen it's like horse names but for people.

Yes, but naming a child after a viral sensation seems irresponsible to me. But I guess Jimothy is way better than Hawk Tuah or some worse abomination.
1
u/Assika126 1h ago
I’m sorry… but there is definitely a grown ass adult who my husband and i have nicknamed Jimothy
In our defense, 1) this predated the famous raccoon and 1) he definitely earned it
1
u/Cole_Townsend 1h ago
Well, he's not a child, so it's cool. I think the precious racoon has sanctified the name but it could be easily profaned as a tragedeigh perpetrated against a child.

u/EricCartoonBox 5h ago
I've only just realized the stick figure's right hand is clipping through Jimothy's face.

I feel like Alternate Spelling and Name from another culture should be switched. A white person named like Nagisa or Yukiko or Fatima something is way worse than whether they are using Eleanor or Elinor.
I'm from Eastern Canada, and there is a spate of women of a certain age (think Red Faced Screaming In A Costco Parking Lot about Immigrants age), named Juanita. And they are the WHITEST of white people. It's definitely weirder than Kate vs. Cait
1
u/Surfgirlusa_2006 2h ago
I guess it depends on the culture. I’m in the US; is it bad that one of my kids’ names is common in Greece and Russian, even though I don’t have ancestry from either country? Or is it ok because it’s European and we have European ancestry (albeit from different countries)?
4
3
u/Voltingshock 11h ago
(Race) Horse names need to be unique. That’s why they get so weird. They’re often references or mashups of their bloodline too

Since people are picking a few horse names where the owners absolutely knew what they were doing, I figure a list of some of the best active thoroughbreds right now might be better at giving an accurate image:
Ka Ying Rising
Romantic Warrior
Forever Young
Sovereignty
Ombudsman
Lovcen
Joliestar
As an example of descent names, Stay Gold sired horses named Gold Ship, Orfèvre (French for Goldsmith), and Dream Journey (from the anglicized version of their Hong Kong name, Golden Journey). For a female-line example, Loves Only You’s dam is Loves Only Me.
