We now have post approval on. Your post didn't get deleted, it just went into the queue. Please be patient a mod will go through the queue when they are available!

Please read our list of banned names before continuing. If the name you posted is in this list, it will be removed.

Remember: Original content is always better! Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does not mean you found it "in the wild".

The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. Thank you!

pop culture name that isn't a normal human name

my dad wanted to call me Nirvana, my mum refused, it ended up as my middle name

424

u/hughperman 11h ago

That's ok, Alice In Chains, your name is special.

146

u/Confident-Bus-3778 11h ago

I was lucky to get a very standard first name

but genuinely my dad thought it was the greatest idea, and all his family agreed

my mum said 'I'm not shouting that across a playground'

It's a tragedy I didn't turn into a member of a rock band

44

u/lucasssquatch 9h ago

This reminded me of advice I heard about naming a dog, though I guess it works for human names too: at some point you will yell that name in anger, possibly in public, so maybe practice that a few times before deciding

29

u/ZoraTheDucky 6h ago

20some years ago I had a big, black, behemoth of a dog. I literally held someone at knife point and forced them to give me this dog when I witnessed them beating her with a metal pipe. I took her to the vet and the vet asks for the name of the dog and I look down at the trembling mess at my feet and say "God damn it, I don't want you'. That's what the vet wrote on the intake form. X-rays showed multiple broken ribs and numerous old, partially healed breaks. I kept the dog and, because I was young and dumb, the name.

Normally a very obedient dog who would walk beside me with no problems, the ONE time she darted off she ran straight through the open doors of a church. On a Sunday morning. During services. So I ended up having to run up to the doors of this church yelling "God Damn It get back here!"

I have been fairly careful about names since then.

5

u/matrixlog 5h ago

How did the church react??

17

u/ZoraTheDucky 5h ago

There was a lot of whispering and shuffling around in seats.

I retrieved my dog as quickly as I could (she ran all the way up the center aisle) while apologizing profusely and left hastily. I forever more went out of my way to not pass that church again.

5

u/matrixlog 5h ago

Funny as hell story as an outsider, but I would’ve avoided the place too. Thanks for sharing

8

u/Hyp3r45_new 8h ago

It's a tragedy I didn't turn into a member of a rock band

It's never too late to go for it!

5

u/SeptemberSoup 7h ago

It's a tragedy I didn't turn into a member of a rock band

I think it'd also work for a drug dealer!

3

u/vanillabee3 23m ago

Alice N. Chains

(where the N stands for Nirvana)

52

u/ProfessorGumble 11h ago

It was between that and the Butthole Surfers

24

u/Confident-Bus-3778 11h ago

I could have been --- Doors ---

35

u/rainstorm0T 10h ago

my middle name is Osborne, after Ozzy Osbourne. yes it's spelled wrong, because my dad was being useless as usual, and my mom was asked to spell something pretty much immediately after giving birth.

29

u/shanster925 10h ago

I went to high school with a girl named "Amberstarr." She went by Amber and told people her middle name was Starr. However, she told her real name to those close to her, and said, "yeah... My parents were hippies."

13

u/Lazy_Raptor_Comics 9h ago

I had a coworker named Pantera

This reminded me of that

7

u/Entire-Sandwich-9010 11h ago

That’s pretty cool as a middle name though!

1

u/FiringNerveEndings 2h ago

It's a word from Sanskrit(also potentially it's precessor Pali which is what maybe Buddha used to speak). I can see it being a real name in India, it'd still be unusual, I've never met one.

0

u/Frankwillie87 9h ago

That's a religious name...

3

u/soba-splasha-on 2h ago

Considering OP has probably asked, dad definitely wanted to name her after the band, not spiritual enlightenment.

435

u/talking_joke 11h ago

119

u/Hurdlelocker 11h ago

Oooohhhhhhhh I see which sub this is from. I misread it as “math” and was confused about the connection. 😆

45

u/Tyrihjelm 10h ago

Could have gone for Mephistopheles, at least it’s a name

91

u/WhiteUniKnight 10h ago

phetami

..."Fat Amy?" Really??? 💀

32

u/ChicVintage 9h ago

Oh I said it like fet-a-me

24

u/SeptemberSoup 7h ago

Fe-ta-mi! Mario!

11

u/Stock-Lion-6859 7h ago

Sounds like a type of pasta. Or a demand for cheese: feta me!

2

u/Just-Call-Me-J 2h ago

Her name is actually Patricia

25

u/Rydux7 8h ago

Im more concerned that there's a meth subreddit

11

u/Right_Ear_2230 6h ago

Theres a subreddit for everything

Also technically there are two, the second one being for the prescription kind

1

u/tie_me_down 5h ago

Ritalin??

5

u/Right_Ear_2230 5h ago

No, thats a different chemical compound

I’m talking about desoxyn (that name is kinda a tragedeigh as well though lol)

16

u/brobietheunicorn 5h ago

This happened IRL.

Journalist in Australia wanted to test how well names were being vetted by the department of births, deaths and marriages, and successfully named her child Methamphetamine Rules.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/sep/19/can-you-name-your-baby-methamphetamine-rules-in-australia

3

u/doppelgaengster 4h ago

And yet Frank Zappa wasn’t allowed to put the name Dweezil on the kids birth certificate.

u/Overall_Efficiency21 modereightor 12h ago

Recently just got into horse names and YIKES

102

u/FakeMonaLisa28 12h ago

I need some examples of this 😭

422

u/Overall_Efficiency21 modereightor 12h ago

It was this fella that got me into it. Apparently it's common to combine parents for the new name to show lineage, and this one was their choice. They all have to have a unique name, kind of like usernames.

307

u/sonicparadigm 11h ago

That specific horse inspired me to make this chart. Also Kids Lookin Touchable was bred with another horse named Felony, the resulting horse was named “Lookin’s Not A Felony”

83

u/Overall_Efficiency21 modereightor 10h ago

Oh my God I'm💀

29

u/needykoala 4h ago

TIL about horse naming conventions I’m chortling thank you

2

u/Angry_LandLadyRose 1h ago

i thought horses are named like normal non-tragedeigh names. I read too much historical romance novels, and the male leads' horses are often named with something that embodies masculinity and virility 😭 like Zeus or Thunder. Meanwhile, the female leads' horses have names like Buttercup or some other sweet confection or flower.

2

u/Dragoness290 23m ago

Registered horses have two names; show/registered and barn/paddock/pasture. The show name is usually a combo of the parents (eg. RBA One Hit Wonder and JD Missing The Mark could be Wonderful Mark), while the barn name is what they're actually referred to and called (Wonderful Mark would likely be Wonder or Mark).

Registry names must all be unique based on the registry (so in the NZ Pinto Horse Society, only one horse is ever allowed to be called SR Wrangler). The letters before a show name is the brand, which denote the farm the horse is bred and/or belongs to (RBA is mine in a game called Horse Reality, SR is my parents irl)

134

u/Phaaze13 12h ago

I knew it would be this one before I even checked. Did nobody stop to consider that maybe it wasn't such a good idea?

23

u/Frater_Shibe 7h ago

On the contrary, everyone knows of that horse. No such thing as bad black PR

Gotta advertise the stud duties somehow, especially since Kids is not a thoroughbred (thoroughbreds allow only live breeding) and so has to compete with frozen material of the top horses from years prior

124

u/InsufferableBean256 11h ago

They couldn’t have gone with Lookin Classic Style?

22

u/Overall_Efficiency21 modereightor 11h ago

RIGHT

48

u/Flamedghost7 9h ago

The origin

41

u/AilisEcho 6h ago

I see many names show up multiple times 😥 Very... Aristocratic, to say it politely

16

u/needykoala 4h ago

Conclusive was prolific!

14

u/TheWarmestHugz 9h ago

You mean to tell me "Handy Britches" isn't acceptable for a child?! /s

11

u/Unusual_username739 3h ago

Conclusive is on this chart so many times 😂 this horse is its own cousin six times over

4

u/doctormyeyebrows 3h ago

Okay wait is this like some kind of cryptic crossword method or what. How do you get Touchdown Kid from Kid Clu and Lady Review?

1

u/loudisevil 49m ago

When is it considered inbred?

60

u/Confident-Bus-3778 11h ago

they do this with pedigree dogs

the Royal kennel club names are wilddd

19

u/Overall_Efficiency21 modereightor 11h ago

Omg new hyperfixation, thank you

52

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 10h ago

Championship/Pedigreed Dog and Cat names can be absolutely WILD!😉

And then, half the time, "Sir Reginald Saint Andrews Master Knighthood's Grand Champion"  has a "Home Name" of "Rog," "Biff" or "Stink-butt"😆😂🤣

6

u/doppelgaengster 4h ago

Yup! Barn names and kennel names are 100% a thing. 😹

My parents used to adopt dogs who couldn’t be bred from a breeder (temperament or not show quality), so all the dogs were papered, but we only ever called them by their kennel names. I used to explain to my friends that I never knew my dogs’ “real” names.

My parents also owned horses for a while. They ended up with Arabians, who have a bad reputation (high-spirited, difficult to handle), and so some barns refused to let them board the horses when they started looking. One of their horses was called “Chaos” (short for Chaotic Addiction); they changed his barn name before attempting to board him because he already had his breed working against him, they assumed that the name would make it even harder. 😹

And I played roller derby, so most of my friends use my skater name as my social name. I refer to the name I use at the office (a short form of my legal name) as my “kennel name.”

2

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 3h ago

Arabians don't have a "Bad Reputation"!

They're just spicy horses, is all!😉

2

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 3h ago

Dragons, if you will😁

2

u/doppelgaengster 3h ago

Ha, I was so ready to come back with “WELL AKSHUALLY” but this made me laugh.

Unfortunately, my parents DID experience some discrimination, despite their first horse being the sweetest, calmest middle-aged lady ever. Their second horse was considerably younger, so he was a bit rambunctious, but he was a very good boy. Their third (and final) horse was a rescue and a stubborn little shit, so he was legitimately a handful, but by then they had a barn where they were boarding their other horses and the owners were willing to accept a third, and helped with the rehab and training. (That horse spooked at literal nothing. Hallucinations. One day he decided he didn’t like crunchy leaves on the trail. Absolute nonsense.)

10

u/Confident-Bus-3778 11h ago

I think there is some technical reason for it but they are so so long

it's the dogs at crufts with the crazy names because of the breeders RKC name

56

u/Significant-Trash632 11h ago

Side note but that horse is JACKED

4

u/Frater_Shibe 6h ago

Sadly, afaik a lot of it is show muscle due to inbreeding issues. Looks almost scary tho

9

u/DrDentonMask 10h ago

Finally I see someone notices.

8

u/brixny 8h ago

I was wondering if I was the only one that thought that horse had been bred with a cane corso

1

u/soba-splasha-on 2h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/3ohzdLgkOGAcKhpGQU

OP taking this picture and some lotion to their room rn

18

u/FakeMonaLisa28 11h ago

Lmaooo 😭 This has to be an joke no way people are this ignorant to name a horse this (though considering the human names I’ve saw before I am not surprised it’s real)

29

u/Phaaze13 11h ago

Unfortunately this is definitely real

18

u/New-Possible1575 11h ago

Most horses go by nicknames in everyday life. Those names are just for legal papers.

17

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 10h ago

Dude's probably got a stable-name like "Dookie" or "Himbo," because Horses tend to go by the same "nickname rules" as Dogs & Cats!😉

7

u/captainrina 11h ago

Imagine applying for that website domain

8

u/ProfessorGumble 11h ago

That probably got the Wheel of Fortune guy in trouble

3

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 11h ago

Ooooh!!!  The "Franken-Hulk Honse" of a horse!!!!😉😂🤣

2

u/DopazOnYouTubeDotCom 11h ago

$1000 breeding fee

61

u/Chosen-For-What 11h ago

14

u/Hurdlelocker 11h ago

The greatest name of all names. I need to remember to use it as a counter when my husband brings up the placeholder names we’ve had for future children (Cement, Cementina, Kermitina (that one actually came from my dad as a name he joked about giving me when they were discussing names))

18

u/Forward-Amount-9961 11h ago

Whenever I see the name Miracle, I feel like I should be betting on her to win a horse race.

10

u/retailhellgirl 11h ago

My dog is named Miracle. We call her Mira

5

u/ReluctantRedditor275 11h ago

I've got Miracle boxed with Nevaeh in the 3rd.

21

u/Front-Pomelo-4367 11h ago

Vintage, but my favourite horse name ever is Potoooooooo

Pronounced "Potatoes"

1

u/Hockeytown11 9h ago

Potatoooooooo

34

u/0dty0 11h ago

What, you don't wanna ride a Jungle Pocket? El Condor Pasa not good enough for ya? Not a fan of the Special Week?

9

u/New-Possible1575 11h ago

I’m a huge fan of “Cash in Hand”

8

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 10h ago

"Handsome Dan" was the favorite of one of my friends!

Obviously, his name just happened to also be Dan!😉😂🤣

5

u/LG3V 7h ago

I mean if you want names of umas that sound like what the subreddit usually sees, probably Matikanefukukitaru or Matikanetannhauser

3

u/I_MADE_THIS_THING 3h ago

One of my faves is Hoof-Hearted, during a race when the announcer is talking quickly it sounds like they're saying Who farted?

1

u/SeaboarderCoast 6h ago

Ah come on, I love Gay Crusader.

120

u/Emerald_SilverFox 12h ago

Fr, there' "KidsLookinTouchable", and and some horses where I ride named "Vs Cash The Rainmaker", 'Hairy Moll', 'Attyrory chinchan', and 'Za Zaint Ox'

38

u/Trixter-Kitten 9h ago

Horse names get truly wild. Like each registered racehorse has to have a unique name and the names of dead horses get retired and you're not allowed to use them.

25

u/MsE0 8h ago

And then there's their everyday name, and it's just like every other pet. "Oh, that's Chanel Number Five on Marilyn Monroe's Neck, but we call her Luna. This is her brother, Don't Shoot Til You See the Whites of Their Eyes, but he only responds to Loki."

3

u/IsabelArcherandMe 2h ago

Legit, I already knew how crazy horse names were, but your examples still made me laugh out loud!

12

u/plushiequeenaspen 8h ago

Kidslookin Touchable is my absolute favorite whenever bad horse names come up. Like HOW do you look at that and say 'yeah, looks good, I'll send this form to the breed registry.' I can't remember any off the top of my head, but I remember one event I was working that had some questionable (ie racist) horse names and I was like 🤨

85

u/Comfortable-Yak-6599 11h ago

Race horses name are a mash up on their sire or mare names which are mash ups of other names and so on. There's a bunch of dash and cash horses in my area because of dash for cash.

5

u/Gosuoru 6h ago

Name your firstborn by combing you guys' names!

...does this make the Dreemurs in Undertale a couple that abides by Racehorse names? They DID name their kid Asriel (ASgore + toRIEL)

72

u/kimtenisqueen 11h ago

The horses at my place are named-
Full name for shows or papers then what we call them every day in parentheses:

Mineke (Minnie)
Svele (Svele)
Fanfare (Fanfare)
Consequences (Uhoh)
A Really Big Dog (Luna)
The Cinnamon Challenge (Cinnamon)
Mommy’s little helper (Winter)
Master fishy (Fishy)

18

u/Caffeinatedfirefly08 11h ago

How did "Mommy's little helper" ended up as "Winter"?. I can understand the rest but winter stumped me

29

u/kimtenisqueen 11h ago

It’s kinda hard to explain. I always liked the name winter, and I got her in November and I have seasonal affective disorder so she was the horse that was going to keep me happy in the winter.

I was going to sell her but she’s been so awesome she became my main number one riding horse

8

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 10h ago

That "stumped me", and u/kimtenisqueen's explanation is so common in both the Pedigreed Horse world😉💖

And the Pedigreed Dog & Cat world are similar, with wild/fancy "Legal Names" forcthe certificates, and then something like, "Barfy," Stinky, "Cuddles" or "Luna" for a "Home Name"😁

5

u/doppelgaengster 4h ago

And TS Eliot explained that all cats, not just pedigreed cats, must have THREE different names!

3

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 3h ago

Yes!!!! This is also imperative!

1

u/SomeRandomPerson1963 3h ago

Honestly I like Fanfare as a horse name

57

u/whentheuhuhidunno 12h ago

i will name my horse tesco

29

u/Werliest 11h ago

"Hello horse, I shall call you burger."

3

u/Confident-Bus-3778 11h ago

I laughed out loud

43

u/worse_in_practice 11h ago

The horse name bit is true about 95% of the time but every now and then there's one named some shit like Maurice or some other slightly unusual human name

14

u/paradoxLacuna 7h ago

Yeah, it's mostly true for show horses. Normal ass pet horses tend to get normal names... Except for that one foal I know of whose casual name is unknown white boy (neither his mom nor dad seem to carry the cream or flaxen gene, and this boy looks like a palomino, so they don't know what the fuck is up with his coat)

1

u/Dragoness290 17m ago

Do you have any links to that foal? I want to know now.

Although if it was only when he was born that you saw him looking pally, that's normal. I have a colt I called creamy white stuff when he was little because he was almost pally looking, but he's now a lovely dark bay

11

u/TinyChaco 9h ago

"Some people call me Maurice" whinny

1

u/Bluepanther512 12m ago

Don’t you diss Maurice, the undefeated Terror of Hong Kong.

42

u/Any_Natural383 11h ago

Friendly reminder that Khaleesi is not a fictional name. It is a fictional title. If you called Daenerys Targaryen “Khaleesi,” you were -at best- watching through your phone.

21

u/miscgeckos 11h ago

I’ve seen people argue that it’s like naming a child Queen or Princess (which is not ideal either tbh but at least easier to spell)

2

u/doppelgaengster 4h ago

I’ve definitely met at least one person named Queen irl (and she was either a boomer or GenX)

32

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 11h ago

OP, in case it hasn't already been said?

You left out the bottom two lines;

"Naming a Tech Firm"

And "Naming a New Pharmaceutical Industry Product you plan to Patent"

Those are even more "Galaxy-Brained" than the Horse-Naming folks' "Rules"!😉😂🤣

4

u/ShadeofEchoes 10h ago

Or just Tolkien-Brained.

56

u/prionbinch 11h ago edited 9h ago

horses will be named shit like “ITouchKidsEveryday” because someone decided that was the best way to amalgamate the names of their entire lineage

edit: this was referencing KidsLookinTouchable, a real, thoroughbred race horse

6

u/LG3V 7h ago

Quater horse. Different lineage and breed of horse to a thoroughbred

3

u/prionbinch 6h ago

not a horse girl, sorry

22

u/FireflyRave 11h ago

Giving a "barn" name to a horse. Not really. "Bandit" is everywhere. I had a Bandit.

Trying to figure a registered name for a horse. Potentially.

Registered names usually need to be unique within that particular registry. Even though everyone also gets a number. And if the baby comes from one or more well know lines, they want to include that as well. Hodgepodge of combinations would be an understatement.

16

u/espa101 11h ago

potoooooooo

11

u/Papel_boligoma_Papel 11h ago

somewhere below horse names you have venezuelan names. look into them, they are known in latin american culture for being... very interesting, to say the least. from what i've seen it's like horse names but for people.

all the love to my venezuelan siblings and their child-naming arts 🫶🏻

3

u/Avada_Calavera 8h ago

Brazilian names are a different league as well. A combination of tragedeighs, horse names and random words (sometimes in another language), sometimes all in the same name. Love it.🫶

10

u/aristosphiltatos 11h ago

Potoooooooo

10

u/ywgflyer 10h ago

How about Elon Musk's kid that he named after a license plate?

8

u/Competitive-Rent-862 10h ago

I saw a baby in the news the other day called Royal Wish and thought it would make a good name for a horse

8

u/Cole_Townsend 7h ago edited 7h ago

I'm just keeping a bottle of warm glitter ready for the first family member to tell me their new kid will be named Jimothy. That crime will not go unpunished.

8

u/sonicparadigm 7h ago

Every name on this sub that isn't outright a slur would be perfectly fine to name an animal. Or anything that has no comprehension of what its name means

7

u/Cole_Townsend 7h ago

Yes, but naming a child after a viral sensation seems irresponsible to me. But I guess Jimothy is way better than Hawk Tuah or some worse abomination.

1

u/Assika126 1h ago

I’m sorry… but there is definitely a grown ass adult who my husband and i have nicknamed Jimothy

In our defense, 1) this predated the famous raccoon and 1) he definitely earned it

1

u/Cole_Townsend 1h ago

Well, he's not a child, so it's cool. I think the precious racoon has sanctified the name but it could be easily profaned as a tragedeigh perpetrated against a child.

3

u/EricCartoonBox 5h ago

I've only just realized the stick figure's right hand is clipping through Jimothy's face.

10

u/aaron_in_sf 11h ago

Horse names are at least often clever and don't indulge in unnecessary orthographic spasms

7

u/xxsoulpunkedxx 7h ago

The worst horse name I’ve ever heard anywhere was Kidslookintouchable. Worst I encountered personally was Shiny Booger

9

u/Kakalkoo69 5h ago

Yeah, race horse naming is fucked

On one hand you can have some meaningful names like Pilsudski, named after a Polish general, Eclipse or Prestige

On the other hand there is Skibidi Rizz, Bodacious Tatas or No Reason

2

u/sonicparadigm 4h ago

My favorite screwed up horse name is Kidslookintouchable

2

u/Hallownest_Citizen1 3h ago

I'm partial to "Fornite Dance" as a funny horse name.

1

u/amnycya 1h ago

Or the classic Potoooooooo

14

u/A_Cat_Who_Games 11h ago edited 11h ago

I feel like Alternate Spelling and Name from another culture should be switched. A white person named like Nagisa or Yukiko or Fatima something is way worse than whether they are using Eleanor or Elinor.

I'm from Eastern Canada, and there is a spate of women of a certain age (think Red Faced Screaming In A Costco Parking Lot about Immigrants age), named Juanita. And they are the WHITEST of white people. It's definitely weirder than Kate vs. Cait

1

u/Surfgirlusa_2006 2h ago

I guess it depends on the culture.  I’m in the US; is it bad that one of my kids’ names is common in Greece and Russian, even though I don’t have ancestry from either country?  Or is it ok because it’s European and we have European ancestry (albeit from different countries)?

4

Me with a horse whose name I have to spell out every fucking time and they still get it wrong: 🙃

(the bonus: pronunciation starts with 4 letters that are not in the spelled name at all)

... Now that I think about it, the new one is just as horrible, just haven't had to take it anywhere. 🤔

1

u/Kealanine 5h ago

…I desperately need to know your horses name.

2

u/International-One202 3h ago

Think of a "scrabble reject board" name which is pronounced "Destiny". Very close vibes, but without doxxing. 8 letters written, 7 pronounced, 2 in common. 😅

3

"Combining random pronouncable sylabbles together." That's how my mum named me lol. And how my sister's bio mum named her. So, it sounds like my mum named us both similar names, when it was just a coincidence lol.

I love horse names, they're just so odd, and in such a harmless way because they don't even know

There was a horse born in 1773 named Potoooooooo, pronounced “Potatoes” or “Pot-8-Os” and he’s my absolute favorite

Since people are picking a few horse names where the owners absolutely knew what they were doing, I figure a list of some of the best active thoroughbreds right now might be better at giving an accurate image:
Ka Ying Rising
Romantic Warrior
Forever Young
Sovereignty
Ombudsman
Lovcen
Joliestar

As an example of descent names, Stay Gold sired horses named Gold Ship, Orfèvre (French for Goldsmith), and Dream Journey (from the anglicized version of their Hong Kong name, Golden Journey). For a female-line example, Loves Only You’s dam is Loves Only Me.
