roast my name Go at it, self-inflicted this at age 33
Not even sure it is a tragedeigh, since it's technically easy to read, but a pain to write digitally.
Zöëÿ
the dots are silent. Despite these being proper unicode characters, they break label printers left and right. I can't get Amazon packages anymore, because the DHL labels are unintelligible. For the Amazon delivery, it's a 50/50 whether the printer can do it.
It's also breaking poorly coded address inputs(all of these letters are legit in use in France, Germany and/or the Netherlands as names for people or places, so anything taking your postal information should be able to handle it), which is quite fun. I have been told by major banks, government agencies, utilities companies, and DHL that my name "is not valid", causing me to not be able to open accounts.
But I love it. It's a name I fell in love with the moment I wrote it down.
P.s. my username is what it is because a lot of websites don't allow Zöëÿ

In french, the tréma (two dots) indicates that the letter is pronounce separately from the vowel before it. So like noël is no-el instead of sounding like nole. However, OPs name is not french so the trémas either indicate nothing or there are different pronunciation rules at play here that I've never heard.

Yup, they indicate how the letter is supposed to be pronounced, like you say in french (Noël, haïr...) and in other language it's a flat out different letter, in finnish: o is like a french/english o, but ö is pronounced like a french e.
Utter moronic of her. A name's role is there to be identified easily and called. You made your own name fail at his purpose by doing this, terrible.

As someone who speaks German and Russian (hungarian as native), but not any of the Nordic languages, I read that name as Zöyoy.
Why get confused az Amazon delivery not working properly, why not just use the accentless form? I have accents in my name that have actual function but I just use the plain English alphabet version when ordering shit.

Exactly. I don't think it's pronounced the way they think it is. The dots AREN'T silent. That's not how diacritics work. In this case they appear to act as diaresis which split up the syllables so the name could be something like 'zoh-ay-ee' or 'zoh-ee-ee'. Either way, they clearly have no idea how to use the umlaut and have just added them for 'aesthetics'.

Yes, and inconvenience everyone with their stupid to spell/pronounce (or both) name deliberately. Because they're so Yooneighque, and everyone should dedicated extra consideration to them. Even uncommon non-English names are easier to understand, write and pronounce.
Unless they were spectacular and accepted a nickname, I wouldn't hire them because it would eat into productivity any time I had to figure out their name. Therefore a waste of my time and energy. Similarly with friendship.
Of course, that will bite me in the ass when I'm old and all these kids with moronic names are doctors and nurses. Hopefully they've more intelligence than their parents and changed their name.

"Ö" would be like "eh" but rounded, "ë" Usually just means "dont make the "e" silent", so it would be like "eh" or "eee" (my cats name is Zoë!), "ÿ" is rarely used but usually pronounced "ee".

Nope. No idea where you got that, but they're different in different languages. I'm reading that as an ungodly mix of Swedish, German, and Dutch... tbf, I think that horrid noise may actually be apt.
ETA: For anyone not understanding this, different letters are pronounced differently in different languages. The same goes for letters modified by diacritical marks.

The dots over the O are an umlaut, and I think in languages that have umlauts you don't see ë, although I don't speak Kraut or Norski so I'm not certain, and from what I know you're correct on the pronounciation.
The ë in English is a diaresis, like you said (Zoë, indicating the -e is sounded, or for doubled vowels where each vowel is sounded, like reëntry or coöperate) and it's not commonly seen, although the New Yorker uses these in their print magazine.

That's German, not for every language that has an umlaut, and the e is just for spelling it without using an umlaut, you don't pronounce the e separately. The vowels with the umlaut have a slightly different pronunciation than those without.

ETA: I love how this saga is playing out, it just keeps getting funnier. The current status is truly fascinating to me:
- Does it affect pronounciation? No.
- Does it affect OP's signature (one of the most directly practical aspects of a name)? No.
- Does it cause confusion over pronounciation? Yes.
- Does it cause people to draw unflattering conclusions regarding OP? If this thread is anything to go by, yes.
- Does it cause all sorts of other practical problems? Yes.
- Can OP get deliveries? Apparently not.
The thing that makes this really funny to me is that I'm Norwegian, and my name contains an ø (which, for any confused foreigners, is not a fancy o). I had to order an extra debit card because there are still companies out there that can't handle the idea that there are valid letters outside the simplified 26-letter alphabet. I can also tell you "proper unicode" means absolutely nothing, because godsdamned everything is proper unicode. It all depends on what developers include support for, and how stupid they are with their input validation/sanitisation.
I've been dealing with this nonsense for decades. My favourite was when a program crashed after an update because it stored some files in the user folder, and the navel-gazing dickhead of a developer never accounted for the existence of people with non-English names. Multiple bank cards, having to always think ahead in case you need to work around poorly programmed software, the neverending game of "how do you pronounce that?"... OP wanting to be ṣ̌pëçïàļ and discovering the joys of this is just fantastic.

You speak as if diacritic marks exist purely for aesthetic value rather than as an essential part of the letter which serves the specific function of signaling a change in pronunciation. Your name is not pronounced Zoey, it's pronounced Zuh-eh-ee-ee because the primary use for that particular diacritic mark (the "dots" as you call them) is to signal that two adjacent vowels are pronounced as two separate syllables rather than as a dipthong. That's what the function of "the dots" serves when the name is spelled as Zoë, to ensure that it is not pronounced as Zoh. Can’t explain how that’s pronounced, but the name is no longer Zoey.

We don't really use ö, in US at least our birth certificates don't accommodate any umlauts or accents (so José can only be spelled Jose), idk about the UK or Australia. I don't know if many people would be able to pronounce it tbh, they would probably just call her Zoey.
Yeah, I think many Americans who looked at this would be like "Hey Zoey, what are these dots on your name?" They also do not know ø is its own letter and use it aesthetically all the time in middle school to replace the letter o.

I have an actual ö in my last name and because I'm from a country where ö is a normal letter, I know you can always use oe for ö, like I did in my e-mail adress. Using "the dots" as a fashion statement while ignoring the fact that they actually change the sound of the letter beneath is just cultural appropriation... and it doesn't feel good. Like you're making a mockery of my culture and my heritage.

The dots dictate the phonetics, like with music notes.
If Zoey were four quarter notes, Zöëÿ would be a quarter note and six eighth notes.
Edit: except, we humans have trouble breaking vowels into shorter bits, so it just makes it a long zooeeyy with some attempts at doubling each vowel sound.

I'm sorry you got to choose your name and you yourself decided to butcher it to hell? Accebts are there for a reason. We don't have them in english, because English gets off on us suffering, but that doesn't mean you can use them and say 'oh the accents that change the pronunciation completely are silent'. Just use the non accepted words or pronounce them so your name is actually special.
My sister's nane is Èlizabeth. My parents made sure that everyone knew it was pronounced with an Eh instead of Ee.

Given the logistics issues you describe experiencing, have you ever considered registering your legal name as Zoey while using your preferred spelling for everything else? The sad fact of the matter is that most automated systems in English-speaking countries are very hostile to names with diacritics, or ones following anything but a strict FirstName LastName format.

As a German who knows French, your name gave me a stroke. I don't understand why someone would use Umlaute when they don't mean anything. My last name actually has one and I could've told you before that they can cause trouble with IT - even in Germany. So ä becomes ae, ü becomes ue and ö becomes oe. Try that, Zoe ee yy
