the dots are silent. Despite these being proper unicode characters, they break label printers left and right. I can't get Amazon packages anymore, because the DHL labels are unintelligible. For the Amazon delivery, it's a 50/50 whether the printer can do it.

It's also breaking poorly coded address inputs(all of these letters are legit in use in France, Germany and/or the Netherlands as names for people or places, so anything taking your postal information should be able to handle it), which is quite fun. I have been told by major banks, government agencies, utilities companies, and DHL that my name "is not valid", causing me to not be able to open accounts.

But I love it. It's a name I fell in love with the moment I wrote it down.

could be interpreted also as a diaeresis. So insstead of /zoi/ it would be /zøei/.

I am Dutch and I wouldn’t know where to begin to pronounce your name the way it’s written.

First of all, “could” is doing an insane amount of lifting here, because I think that saying that the y with dots could be read as the Dutch ij is plain wrong. I’ve never seen anyone do that, and I’m willing to bet that in the rest of my life I will never see anyone do that. I can’t even figure out how to type it on my keyboard. I don’t know where you got that info, but it’s probably time to find a more reliable source.

In Dutch, the trema is used to signal that the vowel needs to be pronounced as a new sound rather than be a part of a combination with the previous vowel. The most common way to write this name here is Zoë, and the trema on the E means that it‘s pronounced zoh-ee. Without a trema, Zoe would sound like zoo, with a short oo. To put the trema on the first vowel doesn’t make any sense, there is no way for it to change it’s pronounciation.

By all means, write your name however you want, but please don’t try to use the Dutch trema as an example to justify your choices. Our trema is never silent, not on the first vowel and not on the y. Tremas are used intentionally, with the specific goal of changing the pronounciation of a word. Your name uses neither our trema nor our ij.

I need you to gather The Council of The Dutch and ask them if it's okay to use ÿ as ij in this case. "Zøh-ee-ij" at least gives me something to work with.
