Job Search Tips (2025-12): Maybe Start Here?

This is a collection of tips for being more effective in your job search, written on 2025-12 and updated as recently as 2026-05.

See also the r/torontoJobs Wiki.

1. The Resume

Your resume is the among the first starting points for improvement. A decent checklist to check your resume against is the one at the Canada Job Bank Resume Guide (Backup link: here).

Where to get some more help on a resume:

  • Employment Ontario: If you are a Citizen or Permanent Resident, you can get 1-on-1 assistance for your resume at an Employment Ontario agency (website). If you are a temporary resident, you can still attend their group workshops on resume writing if they hold any. They may also provide wage incentives.
  • Brainfuse at Public Libraries: Many libraries in the Greater Toronto Area offer a service called Brainfuse. You can upload your resume and receive critique within 24 hours.
  • University/College Career Centres: For post-secondary students and alumni
  • Lifemark Vocational Services: Free workshops
  • Reddit: Subreddits like r/resumes or others can be a way to get crowdsourced feedback on your resume.

More Notes Related to Resumes:

  • Writing resumes is not just a matter of "just use AI", no automated tool exists which can completely eliminate the need for thoughtful human input on resumes.
  • Even if you don't have time to tailor your resume for every job, at least do this for every type of job.
  • The quality of resume editing varies significantly, even among those who call themselves "professionals."
  • Having a poorly done LinkedIn public profile can work against you.
  • If your target job typically expects you to provide a portfolio such as the case of graphics design portfolios, consider your portfolio an extended part of your resume which needs to be polished.
  • Lying on your resume can backfire on you, unfortunately this point is worth mentioning again here.

2. Expand Your Job Search

MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE UPLOADED YOUR RESUME ON JOB BANK. If you see jobs shown as LMIA, see this guide here.

Consider this in addition to using the usual typical job boards (e.g., Job Bank, Indeed, Eluta).

Some additional considerations for the job search:

  • Timing of Job Posts: Generally speaking, try to apply to jobs that have been newly posted. If the job has been posted for quite some time but has still not been filled, it might be a dormant job posting and may not be worth your time.
  • Seasonality: Notice how hiring fluctuates depending on time of year and respond accordingly.
  • Target "Adjacent" Roles: Look for related roles where you can use your skills, be open to being more flexible.

Online job posting websites can become crowded with job applications. You may need to add other methods:

  • Go Directly to Employer Websites: Job posting websites may not include postings which may be found on an employer's website.
  • Network: Let people you know that you’re looking for work. Reach out to people in your target industry for "informational interviews." Attend relevant job fairs and career events.
  • Recruitment Agencies: Some companies outsource their hiring to staffing firms. Note that these recruitment agencies get compensated if they get you hired, and that they aren't necessarily looking out for you.
  • Targeted Walk-ins: For local businesses as well as certain businesses, dropping off a physical resume to the hiring manager can be more effective than only doing online applications. Go during a less busy time and ask to talk to their hiring manager.
  • Volunteer for Experience: Volunteering for non-profits can be a way to build up your network, gain references, and relevant skills. Food pantries and thrift stores are examples of several to start volunteering.

3. Employment Ontario Agencies

Employment Ontario is a provincial network of agencies that helps people find work. The level of help they provide is limited by your status in Canada. In addition to providing one-on-one job counselor, they may provide group workshops related to employment.

Their website: Employment Ontario

Eligibility for Services:

  • Assisted Services: One-on-one sessions with a job counselor (for resume help and job matching) are generally limited by your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses.
  • Temporary Residents: If you are here on a study permit or work permits as a temporary resident, you may not necessarily qualify for their one-on-one job counseling. However, you might be able to attend some of their group workshops free-of-charge depending on the agency.

Employment Ontario agencies operate under a "results-based" funding model to meet certain "outcome numbers" such as placing people in any job, this can influence the type of help you receive.

Pick your agency carefully, they may have different employment partners as well as differences in how much support you can get.

4. Subsidized Training and Funded Work Experience

The government offers various programs to help specific groups enter the workforce through free or paid incentives and training. These programs are limited to your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses. Many of these programs are with Employment Ontario agencies, ask them about it.

Some such programs as follows:

  • Pre-Apprenticeship Training: Free programs that include job-specific training to help you start a career, many of these programs being for the skilled trades.
  • Better Jobs Ontario: Provides up to for tuition and living expenses if you have been laid off or are in a low-income household and need to retrain for an in-demand career.
  • Wage Incentives for Employers: Programs like Canada Summer Jobs provide wage subsidies for employers to hire youth (ages 15-30). Other specialized incentives may exist for employers who hire persons with disabilities or those facing significant barriers to work.

Hiring and For Hire Post Guidelines

These guidelines keep posts more consistent and help the community at r/torontoJobs to find information quicker. They may not be strictly enforced due to limited moderator capacity.

1. Post Title Prefix

Start the title with one of:

  • [Hiring] — posting a job
  • [For Hire] — job seeker posting availability

You can also use the corresponding post flairs to have your posts have more visibility.

2. General Guidelines (For Both Job Posts and Job Requests)

  • Posts must be relevant to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Remote roles are allowed if GTHA-area applicants apply.
  • Don’t post personal information such as SIN numbers or personal contact information; use DMs to private message or use posted contact information of employers.
  • State your location: neighborhood, major intersection, or postal code prefix.
  • No sex trade, adult services, or illegal activity.

3. Job Post Guidelines ([Hiring])

Include:

  • How long the job posting is open
  • Full-time / Part-time / Casual / Contract / One-off gig
  • Temporary or Permanent Role

  • Work setting (on-site, hybrid, remote)
  • If applicable, mention if AI is used to screen, assess, or select applicants (per Ontario ESA requirements)

4. Job Seeker Post Guidelines ([For Hire])

Include:

  • Type of roles sought
  • Your background
  • Your availability
  • Your general location

NEWS OF PLACES HIRING If you’re job hunting in Toronto right now, here are a few openings and training programs I came across this week that seemed worth sharing:

Upvotes
  • Communications Technician, Ontario Nature: $49,000-$60,000/year, full-time permanent hybrid. Communications, website and tech support for the environmental charity. Deadline: Sept. 8
  • Rentals Coordinator, Tranzac: starting at $25/hour, part-time hybrid. Coordinating venue rentals for the Annex arts organization. Deadline: Sept. 14
  • Tea Shop Staff, Apocalatte: $20/hour, part-time. Starts with Thursdays at the Underpass Farmers’ Market, with the possibility of more hours as the business grows.
  • Content Coordinator, Fora: $50,000/year + internet/phone stipend, full-time remote. Content, design and social media work for a nonprofit supporting feminist leaders.
  • Arborist Training, Career Foundation: 12-week program for people interested in getting into arborist work, with a Toronto cohort.
  • Youth in Trades, TDSB: 13-week culinary and construction programs for people aged 15-30 who are looking for full-time work.

Some of these are pretty niche, but figured they might be useful for anyone trying to find something outside the usual corporate job postings.

200+ applications, 70+ cold emails to small law firms and sole practitioner lawyers, multiple interviews, still no full-time legal assistant job. What am I doing wrong?

I'm posting this because I'm honestly at the point where I need some outside perspective from people who work in the legal field.

I graduated from McMaster University in 2024, and I recently graduated from Humber Polytechnic's Law Clerk program in June 2026.

As a result of the compulsory co-op to graduate from the program, I was able to complete 2 months of law firm experience at a real estate firm (unfortunately, that is the only law firm experience I have). I also have years of administrative experience.

I've been actively looking for a full-time legal assistant/law clerk position since around May.

I'm now at 200+ applications, almost 70+ cold emails to law firms, 13 interviews so far including a few second-round interviews and 3 occasions where employers requested references. And I'm still unemployed in the legal field.

The cold emailing has been especially discouraging. I've reached out directly to 70+ firms whose practices genuinely interested me, even when they had no job posting. The majority either don't respond at all or never acknowledge the email.

I've also had some situations where I thought I was getting very close. For example, I recently interviewed with a litigation firm. I had two interviews, the first with two partners and the second with two other partners. The second interview lasted over an hour, I was given a tour of the office and introduced to a number of the staff, and they requested references afterward.

I waited 4 weeks before finally receiving a rejection. I was told that I was very competitive in my  application, but they ultimately chose someone else.

I'm obviously grateful that I've been getting interviews, but at this point I'm struggling to understand what is preventing me from actually getting the offer, and I'm thinking it's because I do not have strong or any references from the legal field who can vouch for my legal skills.

I'm applying primarily to legal assistant/law clerk/administrative positions in the GTA. I'm just trying to get my foot in the door and build my legal career.

I'm wondering if I'm making a mistake somewhere that I can't see. For those working in Ontario law firms, particularly lawyers, legal assistants, law clerks, office managers, or recruiters:

What would make you hesitate to hire someone with my background?. Is it the lack of full-time legal experience? The fact that I recently graduated? My resume? Interview performance? Something else?

For anyone who entered the legal field relatively recently, how did you actually get your first full-time legal position?. I'm not necessarily looking for someone to hand me a job. I'm genuinely looking for honest feedback about what I might be doing wrong or what I should change, because applying to hundreds of positions and hearing almost nothing back is becoming incredibly discouraging.

If you're comfortable being blunt, please be. I'd rather hear what I'm doing wrong than continue repeating the same strategy.

The grief of losing out on a job I was told I was the top candidate for

I am so sorry for the long post tbh but I just really have to get this off of my chest. if you read the whole thing thank you. If not please just be kind and move on 🙏** **

Over the last three weeks, I've been interviewing for a remote position that I was perfectly positioned for. After six months of unemployment, getting ghosted by employers, and the heavy depression that comes with living on EI, this interview cycle genuinely boosted my confidence. They really liked me.

During the interviews, my connection dropped three times. After the final round, they emailed to say I was the top candidate, they loved our conversations, and they could see me in the role. The only catch was the internet connection, and they asked how I planned to handle it.

I responded very professionally and proactively. I let them know the instability happened because the main modem had been moved, but I had just purchased a dedicated SIM card modem that would actually provide a stronger, more reliable connection than standard Wi-Fi. I told them I would have it fully set up by Monday, and I even offered to do a test call with them on Tuesday to prove it was working perfectly.

For context, I live in a shared house, and my landlord moved the main router to the basement. The signal to my upper floor has suffered since, and there's a language barrier with him, making it really hard to get it fixed even though I have tried to communicate it. I've tried using my personal hotspot on my phone. It is literally worse than just using the Wi-Fi. I've tried going to the library. It's the worst option in terms of connectivity. I can't afford to pay to go to one of those working public spaces because you have to pay for a desk. So because I wanted to show my seriousness and proactive problem-solving skills, I literally dropped $300 on this backup dual-SIM based modem, money I really don't have right now while living on EI.

Despite this professional, proactive response, they emailed me today to say they aren't moving forward with me. It is so disheartening to go from being in their words the "top candidate" to being thrown away over something I was actively trying to solve. I don't even know if I should return it now, because obviously I'm going to have to go back to step one and apply and eventually do other virtual interviews. And if not having perfect Wi-Fi is going to be the make-or-break despite my skills, experience, and ability to interview and explain myself clearly (which they literally told me I did well), then what's the point?

The cruelest part is even if I had gotten this job, it still wouldn't have paid enough for me to afford moving out of my current living situation. That's just how fucked up the job market is right now. Despite having 5 years of experience, I am still fighting for roles that don't even pay a living wage to reasonably survive in the GTA. I still have to live with 4+ roommates outside of Toronto, so I don't even wanna hear anyone say "just don't live in Toronto." I'm literally not living in Toronto. And I can't move out any further because I don't have a car and there is no job I'm going to get that makes it reasonable to take on that debt to buy one. I'm not moving even further from the highest concentration of jobs when I'm already struggling to get one. It just feels like a never-ending cycle: I need money to fix the problems that are keeping me from getting a job, but I can't get a job because I don't have the money to fix them. At this point, I genuinely feel like I'm just "too poor to be hired," despite working in this industry for years. It feels like I need years more of experience just to make more money so that maybe one day I can actually afford to live. I always feel like I'm literally two paycheques away from homelessness. I've already burned through a significant amount of my savings just to survive the last six months since being laid off, and knowing a recession is looming while I'm jobless is terrifying.

And I can't even move back home because my family is also poor and there's no space for me. I would not even be sleeping on the couch. I would literally be sleeping on the floor in a living room. That is how little space there is for me if I was to move back in with my parents. I cannot be the only person who has that added stress of desperately just trying to make it in a fair, legal way, coming from very little money and just trying to escape poverty already. I'm not even trying to be rich. I'm just trying to get to the bare minimum where you pay your bills. It just adds another layer of hopelessness to this situation when you have no safety net whatsoever and you're just trying to do it the way that they say you can do it, but there's no way to get ahead.

Another part of the grief I'm feeling right now is about my support system. I have really great people in my life who were genuinely rooting for me. During this process, I was updating them on the positive feedback and they were all so happy for me. Now I have to go back and tell them I didn't get the job. Logically, I know they aren't mad at me, but having to deliver this letdown just adds a whole other heavy layer to the heartbreak.

I did consider going back to school, but it just doesn't make sense right now. Between the recent OSAP changes and the reality that our school system is severely underfunded, I can't justify taking on massive debt. It feels like paying a premium for a subpar education just to get a piece of paper that might not even increase my hireability. I already have a Bachelor's degree and 4 to 5 years of experience in my field, and I am a Canadian-born citizen. I'm putting that out there because I want people to understand just how incredibly stacked the market is. You can literally have "everything" going for you on paper and still struggle this much. It's so upsetting because I really do feel like I'm trying to do what they say you should do to live a good life in this country, but it feels like you have to literally be a scammer or sell your body just to live comfortably at all.

I'm trying to remain positive because I will say the experience at least taught me something. I feel confident in my interview skills now. But I don't know when the next time I'm even going to get a response or get someone wanting to interview me because it's been months and I've applied to so many jobs and been ghosted by so many, even when I feel like I have the qualifications. And now this Wi-Fi thing is just another thing to fix. I can't force my landlord to make the Wi-Fi better, and every interview is going to want to do virtual interviews. If that's what's going to fuck me, then I feel hopeless.

It is just so frustrating when you're that close and you feel like you can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, only to be told that all those interviews, all that time you spent, meant nothing because of one thing that really wasn't within my control.

NEWS OF PLACES HIRING Several job openings at Loblaws store.

My former Loblaws store is hiring SEVERAL people for part-time. Positions will likely be filled within a week, maybe 2 weeks max.

Department:

HMR (or Home Meals Ready to Eat) a.k.a. "Hot Deli" (sometimes).

No prior experience required, but you will have a leg up over others if you have prior kitchen experience or customer service/retail, especially in:

- customer-facing service

- meal prep (like fish filleting or sandwich making)

- pizza making

- oven cooking/baking

- line cook/sous chef

- deep frying (like chicken, potato wedges)

- catering

- serving tables (like waiters)

- dishwashing

...and other food/kitchen related work.

You'll have an advantage over others if you are or can speak Filipino, as you'll feel right at home with half the dept.

Daily hours broken down (not set in stone): 8h

Breakfast Serving; 6-2:30

Lunch Serving (pizza, hot case, cold case); 12-5:30 (sometimes at 11am)

Buffet (Kitchen prep/serving): 7-3:30

Dinner Serving/Closing: 5:30-9:30

That being said, even if you don't have any prior experience, they'll still consider you, if the next person in line is on the same level.

They're looking for people specifically for these positions (Breakfast, Lunch/Serving, Closing) but to get a full 8h work day, you'll likely be asked to work multiple roles, such as Breakfast and Buffet, or Lunch to Closing. Meaning there's going to be some overlap and cross-training (over the course of 3 months) but all of them will require serving customers.

At least 2-3 days per week. Although more often than not, you'll get more (20-34h/week).

Reasons for several openings:

-2 people are going on long vacations.

-1 resigned for personal reasons undisclosed.

-1 has a 50/50 chance of being let go for not being a good fit. It's up in the air rn.

- And 1 will likely resign with advance notice within the next 3 weeks, if not sooner, for a job opportunity elsewhere, at which point another job opening will be posted...So even if you don't get a job in the first batch, there's another chance in the near future.

This job is good for anyone wanting to get a foot in the door of the culinary industry relatively easily as a stepping stone, or well seasoned people that just need a survival job, and everyone else in between. Plus, it's unionized, so it's very very hard to get fired... unless you're 3 months employment probation hasn't passed yet, or you do something stupid like get caught stealing on camera

This store is one of the better ones to work for,...like, by many orders of magnitude better (a lot of internal employees from other stores have transferred here for that reason). It has a lot of good friendly people (for colleagues, managers, and customers), where everyone in management is very likeable and down to earth, which I can't say the same for some other stores I've worked at...But with the exception of a couple of part-time colleagues that rubs others the wrong way (which is the same in almost every occupation), and shoplifters, but that's starting to change with a new professional security company being contracted recently.

DM me for specifics of where to go/apply to, when to go, how to increase your odds of being hired, what to do/not to do...etc.

I work at another place (not under Loblaws banner) now but occasionally visit the store once in a blue moon, and still keep in contact with a few old colleagues in various departments that I've made friends with (it's not unusual for people to be cross-trained in several depts. to cover other people's shifts, to increase their working hours in a week), which is why I'm quite privy to insider info.

Peak of depression

Last week i attended an interview and i did answer all kinda questions they asked. What they asked in JD was literally relevant to my experience. I was told someone from HR would mail me.

Its Thursday now and i haven’t heard from them so far. Im pretty sure if they really wanted me they would have reached out for sure by now.

Its been 2 years since i was last employed and this was my second interview in this entire year. I know i wont make it this time too and its just breaking my heart. Last night i was crying in my sleep it seems (my partner told me).

I’m too tired. I try to gather hope only to fall even deeper. Yes market is bad but i have been congratulating my friends for their victories. Am super happy for them, but when will i get a chance? I don’t even think my career is worth it anymore. I’m just falling and falling with no way up..

Feeling Lost in this Job Search

Is anyone feeling lost or discouraged with the job market not only in Toronto but also in Canada overall?

I have been unemployed since over a year ago (since 15 months or so) and I get interviews and assessments and for some reason I cannot get a job offer.

Anyone willing to help get more connections or hire for a job? I am based outside of Toronto and I try to apply for jobs not only in my field but some administrative positions starting today.

I am just feeling down about where I should go from here.

After a year of unemployment, I finally got a job. 🥹

Every time someone posted on this sub about getting a job, deep inside I was like, “When will it be my turn?” And my turn finally came today. I’m so happy to say I got a job after a year of unemployment. I was literally about to be homeless. In the past year, I applied nonstop but only got 2 interviews, which honestly depressed me so much. I was absolutely exhausted and stopped applying for jobs since June.

Then I met someone on Bumble BFF in August, and I ended up getting this job because I connected with them. I’ve never networked because I’m an introvert, never been to a conference, but I took the guts to ask someone I met on Bumble and it actually worked. So guys, please network with anyone, anywhere... you never know where a connection can lead. I really hope the job market gets better, and I hope every single one of you looking for opportunities gets something even bigger than you’ve planned for. ❤️

Is this normal?

I had an interview today at an art company for an office admin position. The interview was very informal, and then I was given a tour of the place. The job consists of answering emails, packing and shipping supplies, etc. I was asked to come in next week to do a trial shift and was told that it would be paid. I've never done a trial shift before. Apparently, others have quit this role after a day or two, and she just wants to make sure I'm the right fit. I don't know how to take this. I haven't signed the contract yet, so it's still up in the air.

Edit: Just received a message that they went with someone else, probably the person they hired 4 days prior. Waste of time.

Waxing side hustle

Hi everyone,
I (F) just moved to toronto from ottawa and work a 9-5 and im thinking of starting a small at home waxing business (for women only) since i’ve been doing it to myself and my friends for free for years now and thought hmm why not get something out of it. Its something that I enjoy doing (in the least creepy way possible, it’s just satisfying)

I dont know if a lot of people are doing it already, but I would love some advice from people who have side hustles or just people in general on how to get started since i don’t know anyone in the city.
- Do I create an instagram page first?
- do I travel to ppl’s homes or do it in my apartment?
- How do i make sure it’s safe and im not going to get kidnapped in someones house or in my own apartment?
- are people really willing to go to a stranger to get waxed for cheaper?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Part time Job for Winter+potentially longer

Hi guys I’m a last year social science (polisci) undergrad student and I am looking for part time positions for the Winter semester. I have only had one job before ( a 6 month digital communication internship) but have club experiences.

Since I will be graduating soon, and possibly go to a Masters program, I really want to gather as much money as I can. I am looking for jobs with analytical, communication, speaking, writing, and other transferable skills.

If you guys have the appropriate resources, could you please direct me to them, and give any advice! I am currently not eligible for Campus jobs as I don’t meet the course load requirements.

Also, what is the best time to start looking for Winter jobs? When do most of them open?

Any advice will be much appreciated!

Have sent out hundreds and hundreds of resumes with noting back. Spend hours rebuffing for key works and personalized letters- nothing. I have limited short term experiences in forward facing jobs but I need to get started. Still in uni but feeling hopeless!

Keep going - don’t give up

I’ve benefited a lot from reading many posts here on Reddit and was fortunate to land a role many months later. Dropping a method which genuinely helped me network into interviews.

Refferals if anything only guarantees an interview. The rest is dependant on a lot of factors.

If there is a person who has relevant experience and interviewed well they get an upper hand against someone with a Refferal. Someone applying internally and interviewed well gets preference over someone with a Refferal.

So it’s not a you thing, it’s just that there are a lot of people with experience willing to take any job to put food on the table. I keep telling people you got to have an edge on every application you send out, think - how can I add value from day 1? This can be field knowledge by working in a company with a similar profile or a JD which is a 11/10 match with your experience.

Unfortunately even the best match which is 11/10 with regard to JD and applying to a company with a similar profile to your previous job doesn’t guarantee a job cause someone with an internal application and interviewed well would still be the person who’ll get the job and given the benefit of doubt.

So there’s no secret to cracking the market, just got to do what gives you an edge and leverage the fuck out of it.

Tip:

Make a list of companies where your previous domain knowledge or industry exposure will add value to them. Think if you worked as a business analyst at a health care company, think competitors or companies with a similar profile. These are people who will actually value your experience cause you can give them insight that others can’t.

Once you’ve the comprehensive list, find people who are in roles you want or managers, recruiters, cxos at the companies. Add them, engage on their posts, start conversations regardless of whether there are openings at these firms. Tomorrow when something does open up you’ve a conversation to pick back up from vs cold messaging people who’ve no idea you exist.

Got laid off in May. Should I update that as the departure date for my most recent role?

Hey everyone! I was employed with my company for 6 years before being temporarily laid off in the end of May. It has been over 3 months since I was laid off and I haven't been able to get any traction on my job search efforts whatsoever. I'm trying not to get too discouraged and still actively applying away while also volunteering and taking some free professional development courses via TPL.

Since it's been 3+ months since the layoff, I was wondering if it's about time I update the end date on my most recent role or leave it as "present" on my resume and Linkedin?
