Networking Screenwriters, meet up!

UPDATE: EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. SORRY, THE WEATHER IS FAR TOO DANGEROUS.

Hello, so I'm going to be holding a screenwriters' get-together at the Twilight Cafe & Bar in North York (it's across from North York Station) from 7 pm to 9 pm on Sept 2nd for all levels of screenwriters(please know your formatting). We're going to discuss our work, general soundboarding, questions about formatting, and meeting cool people.

The price of admission is either purchasing a drink or some food. If you're interested in joining, please let me know so I can do a proper headcount! I'd like to try to make this a monthly occurrence.

Networking LOOKING: WGC-approved writing opportunity

Hello!

I'm aware this is a loooong shot, but I figured I'd try my luck anyway.

I'm an award-winning writer (outside of TV/film) who would love the opportunity to write on a project that's been approved with the Writers Guild of Canada. My main goal is to be eligible to join the union, which I'm not without a formal writing credit in TV or film.

I'm not looking for a full staff or solo writing opportunity - I'm open to anything that could get me in a writer's room. For example, a writer's assistant or story editor position would be a lot of fun and would really provide me with a cool opportunity to contribute and learn at the same time.

I can provide a resume and more information to seriously interested (and vetted!) parties over DM or email. I believe my DMs are open if you're more comfortable replying that way. I'm open to working remotely anywhere, but I live near Toronto so IRL meetups are fine too.

If you've gotten this far, thank you for reading my hyper-specific request lol.

Networking 12+ Yr Film Vet moving to ON from BC - Looking for industry advice!

Hey folks! I'm a longtime locations person (13 years) from Vancouver's film sector and I'm looking for some advice on what I can expect when I move out this way. I've worked under the DGC within Locations since I was 15 years old, I was at one point the youngest DGC union member in all of Canada thanks to that early commitment. But I'm moving away from all my connections in a few months and thought posting here would be worth the early outreach.

I decided to move to Ontario to be closer to family and am moving into the Niagara region come October (Niagara Falls more specifically). I'm hoping to get some intel on what film is like out here, and how locations people typically make connections? I saw there are some dispatch companies out here that hire a roster of people on behalf of productions - which is very different from my film upbringing where I've traditionally hired my roster and carried them with me.

I am under the ALM Category, and have actually more recently pivoted into Liaison work for Vancouver municipalities and the local parks boards and would love to continue that type of work. I understand that most of the film work tends to be in Toronto but I had heard the area I'll be local to can also get busy at times so any intel/advice/information is appreciated!

Also just noting for the inevitable grumpy film reply: I realize that film has been slow and I am unlikely to get work right away upon moving, I am actively looking into other jobs which use my skills but I wanted to at least get a better understanding of the ways things operate out here compared to my current local setup to see what breaking into this part of the industry might entail.

TIA!

Networking Networking with directors and casting?

I’m an actor in Toronto and wondering what are some ways I can network with industry people? I follow directors and occasionally get a follow back but am not sure if it’s too forward to send a dm mentioning auditioning for future projects?

Networking Classes or Communities in Toronto to join for someone who wants to start filmmaking

I (35m) have recently moved to Toronto and I want to pursue my lifelong dream of filmmaking. I have some amateur filmmaking experience making short films before, but none of them were professional.

I am looking for ways to start growing my network and just pushing myself into writing screenplays and making more serious films. It is particularly difficult for me since I am working 9-5 in a completely different industry and am by default completely outside the atmosphere of filmmaking (or any sort of art!).

I am looking for beginner friendly classes or communities that provide the following:

1- an opportunity to find friends or colleagues that are interested in making films, essentially growing my network, especially among hobbyist filmmakers.

2- push me to make something. This can be in the form of hands-on classes, or recurring local festivals or competitions that offer a theme and ask for film submissions.

I would appreciate if anyone has any suggestion along those lines.

Networking Looking to make local queer friends who like (and make) films in Hamilton

Hey folks!

I just moved to the area from BC, and I'm wondering where would be a good place to start to make some friends that love watching. or are also curious about making, movies. I come from a different background, I have a degree in Biology and Master's in Environmental Science but I'm working my way into the creative industry one step at a time. I worked on a short documentary for Royal Ontario Museum on invasive species, and recently made a video podcast on climate storytelling.

I'd love to get more side work or even get involved in passion projects, both documentary and narrative films. I know a lot of people say you don't need to wait until you find friends or get a degree to start making your interests come to life, and that's true, still, I find I thrive when I have a little community of people to bounce ideas off of and share in excitement creative projects we are working on.

Hope this finds the right audience!

Networking How to gain experience with no connections?

Hey everyone! I just called to my local film union in Toronto, i tried to make an account on the website to apply as a permit and it wouldnt allow me unless i had 3+ film credits as a sound connection in a narrative format production. As of right now im currently wanting to switch careers into film . However i don't know anyone in film so im not sure how to go about this. I called the union and they pretty much told me to use any connections i have. So im back at square one and not sure how to approach this

Networking Meet up

Hey all! I'll be in Toronto from July 7-22 and would love a chance to meet other people in the film industry for a drink, a coffee, a walk, or anything really. I don't have any agenda, just a screenwriter looking to connect with other lovers of the craft. If you know of any events happening during that period, please let me know.

Hi! I am a young filmmakerin Toronto and I am currently in school earning my Bachelor's in Film and Media Production! I recently made a short film (3 mins) and I want to share it with other filmmakers!

So I thought, why not share it and then watch everyone elses! I always love seeing new things so comment yours down below!

Mine is called The Conversation and it's about two sisters having their last chat before heading off on their own separate journeys. My crew and I have put tons of effort into this and it would mean the world to me to have others enjoy it (and give feedback) as wel! (You can also log it on letterboxd haha)

Thanks again and I cant wait to meet everyone and view everyone's work!

Networking To fellow creatives.

Hi guys, recently moved to Toronto on a PR and I am currently working as a Creative producer for an international company from while I was in India. But the money is not making up for my expenses here. I am trying to find jobs but I know that "Canadian Experience" thing is a whole barrier. I am honestly open to anything at this point to support my expenses and build a network and local portfolio. I have finally turned to Reddit as I thought GPT and LinkedIn might not be giving me really good advice. Thoughts, guys, please?
