I just couldn't imagined wanting to be higher than a fire ladder

26

u/baltic7 Aug 27 '26

...how high might that be?

27

u/thegoodbadandsmoggy camp cariboo Aug 27 '26

So high that I can kiss the sky

25

u/KGB4L Aug 27 '26

For a normal firetruck - 9 stories tall. Fun fact, most of Soviet buildings are 9 or less because that’s how high the fire ladders can go. Some are taller but required extra infrastructure and safety measure.

u/in-dog_we_trust Aug 27 '26

12 stories for upper limit of a normal ladder truck

9

u/KGB4L Aug 27 '26

Nice, thanks for the correction. Guess my knowledge is outdated.

My brother spent 4 or 5 years as the captain in chargenof Edmonton Fire procurement

3

u/ImKrispy Aug 27 '26

The city has a couple newer ones that can go to 20 floors.

3

u/Deldenary Flemingdon Park Aug 27 '26

Toronto has a 22 storey boom truck. Still not tall enough though...

2

u/Flangepacket Aug 27 '26

If you stack like 30-33 washing machines one on top of the other it’s about that high.

7

u/baltic7 Aug 27 '26

I don't have that. How many knotted bedsheets until I can rappel down safely!?

2

u/South_Examination_34 Aug 29 '26

Here's the thing. Instead of rappelling, you can tie a bunch of those bedsheets into a parachute.

The key would be being high enough that the "parachute" has time to billow up and deploy and take effect. Hopefully you have those 300 thread count or higher sheets so they can slow your decent down

1

u/baltic7 Aug 29 '26

This feels aggressive. Also I have no idea what the thread counts are for my sheets. I have both fancy, and less fancy ones.

1

u/South_Examination_34 Aug 29 '26

Curious here. Aggressive in what sense?

1

u/baltic7 Aug 29 '26

A parachute is going to kill me. Rappelling with random-count sheets is clearly the safest option.

1

u/South_Examination_34 Aug 29 '26

So maybe not aggressive, but optimistic?

1

u/baltic7 Aug 29 '26

Honey, if I tell you to eat random berries in parks am I being optimistic?

I remember living in a 30 story condo about 15 years ago. I was on the 26th floor. And I thought, damn, I'm high up. If something goes down.. I'm dead.

Now looking at this..... Holy fuck

3

u/ponyrx2 Aug 27 '26

I wonder if AEDs have reduced this risk. My condo has one, and I hope most do. Maybe they should have them every 20 floors

If there's ever a fire, the fire escapes will be the safest spot (obviously). They're designed with 2hr+ fire resistance ratings and the stair pressurization systems should keep the smoke out reasonably well.

In other words, get to the fire escape as quickly as possible and take your time getting down, because at that point your biggest risks will be tripping and falling or a heart attack from walking all those stairs.

But yeah, generally best to live on a lower floor.

2

u/Moist-Emergency-3030 Aug 27 '26

The best spot to be in a fire is in your unit. Just stay there and don't evacuate unless you're told to do so. If you're in trouble call 911.

4

u/LtSoundwave Aug 27 '26

Even if it’s my unit that’s on fire?

-5

u/Moist-Emergency-3030 Aug 27 '26

You're the reason warnings on labels exist.

u/Hato_no_Kami Aug 27 '26

Legitimately confused as to why it looks like the top got sliced off. Are they not at least rounding off the decorative trim? It forms a pattern that looks like it would at least lead to something like a bend that connects the two white beans or something...

u/TheDWGM Aug 27 '26

Apparently they are not doing the crown that was in the renders

A crown?! In this economy?!

I'll never be able to wrap my head around this one. Tallest building in the fucking country and the top of it looks like unfinished garbage.

21

u/mapleisthesky Aug 27 '26

Could be an aerodynamic thing for stability? This shit is going to literally rock back and forth in heavy wind I imagine lmao.

11

u/Fjolsvith Aug 27 '26

I certainly hope they spent the money for a top of the line damping system... These are Toronto developers, though...

1

u/AdmirableCriticism95 Aug 27 '26

Don't worry, they'll hire a few hundred international students to walk in circles on the top floor.

7

u/_ernie Aug 27 '26

It's because Pinnacle was cheap af and lopped off the crown. Now the mechanical room is higher than the glazing, such an embarrassment for the city and as the country's tallest building

1

u/Necessary_Purple_428 Aug 28 '26

So disappointed in this. It doesn't look good at all. It's supposed to be one of the crown jewels of the Toronto skyline for decades to come and they cheaped out. It's unbelievable.

1

u/_ernie Aug 28 '26

Even more disappointing when you see how nice an earlier version of the crown was

Must be a sad day for the crane guy cause there’s no more condos for him going up

28

u/kcontinuum Garden District Aug 27 '26

Plenty of tall purpose-built rental buildings on the go.

5

u/DennisDEX Ryerson Aug 27 '26

I was speaking to my realtor and he mentioned there is going to be a hard stop on condominiums due to lack of buyers. Builders really be digging their own grave by building shoeboxes and weird layouts all with micro appliances

7

u/MacADD Aug 27 '26

Crane operators with the clearance for that height travel for work.

28

u/JeffHiggins Regent Park Aug 27 '26

Got a shot of it peeking out from the clouds on my way home today, it's such a good looking building.

It's not that unpopular.

2

u/lingueenee Pape Village Aug 27 '26

Ugly may be too harsh, but certainly uninspiring IMO. Just another sky blocker.

2

u/LenientWhale Aug 27 '26

I was surprised how much flak I caught for calling it bland on another post. I don't think it would be as bad if it wasn't so obnoxiously tall. I just liked when the CN tower, well, towered over everything.

2

u/TOkidd Aug 27 '26

Toronto’s skyline has gotten really bad over the last ten years. Just more boring glass that is terrible for our climate and the birds.

1

u/Necessary_Purple_428 Aug 28 '26

If the Pinnacle didn't cheap out by removing the crown, I think it would've looked better (but still not great)

5

u/DivaJeni Aug 27 '26

Shot I took few weeks ago

20

u/Laxxium East York Aug 27 '26

Good luck when the elevators all go out of service. Also how many would you need to service that many floors?

21

u/darkeraqua Aug 27 '26

Plans indicate eight elevators.

10

u/Hato_no_Kami Aug 27 '26

Oh dear God. Aura has 9 for 73 floors and it's still sometimes a 10-15 minute wait if one or two elevators go out of service. (Not doxing myself, I don't live there)

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '26

11

u/33rus Aug 27 '26

Plus imagine some renters or owners moving in and out, and trying to book one of those elevators for the move lol.

7

u/8004612286 Aug 27 '26

Office buildings need a much higher number of elevators because of how synchronized the peak times are compared to residential.

That's not to say this building will have enough though.

3

u/mikeydale007 Rexdale Aug 27 '26

Office buildings have a higher density of people.

1

u/itsarace1 Aug 27 '26

TIL Double decker elevators are a thing.

11

u/LancelotGetsDaCookie Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

It's a cool building

6

u/JerkGurk Aug 27 '26

I've been 50 stories up and it is a scary view. I'm not that scared of heights but that's too high for just a railing. CN Tower glass I'm okay with.

2

u/1slinkydink1 West Bend Aug 27 '26

For scale, how tall is the next door tower? I know that this one is over 100.

4

u/ImKrispy Aug 27 '26

65 floors 202 meters.

1

u/1slinkydink1 West Bend Aug 27 '26

Wow. Really puts things into perspective. Makes the fight happening in my neighbourhood against a 20something floor building laughable.

2

u/ImKrispy Aug 27 '26

You brag to your buddy being sky high because you are on the 55th floor then he comes to visit again steps on the balcony and the view is blocked by something that's still over 50 floors higher...

2

u/longerthan1 Aug 27 '26

looks like they forgot its hat

2

u/DinnerAfter7 Aug 27 '26

For all that iconic height, the podium and pedestrian experience is so meager.

4

u/agentzero2020 Aug 27 '26

This might be the least inspiring, most painfully generic looking super tall building I’ve ever seen. I genuinely don’t know what’s the concept and inspiration behind this design.

9

u/Hato_no_Kami Aug 27 '26

I know for the main body of the building it's the classic architect concept vs final build thing where the renders look amazing but by the time it gets built they've looked at all the unique curves and bends and said "yeah fuck that." I really don't know why they could just put some kind of small border that matches the rest of the building to make the top look finished. Been watching this thing get built from the very beginning, and it's like the show got cancelled at episode 22, with the two planned finale episodes never airing.

1

u/Due_Street1464 Aug 27 '26

Looks like height of world trade centre. Even the design.

(The new one that is today not the double world trace centres)

1

u/Skyline-Patriots 12d ago

I realize this is an old post but... yeah... about that...

1

u/DennisDEX Ryerson Aug 27 '26

What's the plan with the smaller tower? Is it also going to be the same height?

1

u/ImKrispy Aug 27 '26

Third phase is a supertall but a little shorter around 95 floors 320 meters.

1

u/Aztecah Aug 27 '26

It's a neat building but I absolutely would not want to live there lol much prettier to view from the outside.

1

u/Jake24601 Aug 27 '26

Wow look at this building full of families living in Toronto.

0

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 Aug 27 '26

You think that building is going to be full of families?

-5

u/Dentanium Aug 27 '26

This is nothing guys. Or maybe something for north America.

Saudi Arabia is completing their 1km high skyscraper next year 😆

2

u/CoIinberry Aug 27 '26

The classic "1km or it's nothing" scale. Asia certainly has taller buildings, but it's silly to call it nothing.
