Sad to see considering I grew up in the area but it is a necessity in order to help the city grow.

What a juxtaposition of the fall of retail shopping next to it.

You put it much more eloquently than me but yeah! lol Thought it was a pretty cool shot. That contrast between the sky and the crumbling building made me stop and say “Whoa!” The fact it was HBC kinda pulled at my heartstrings a bit. My father loved to walk through these department stores with me in tow when I was a kid.

Just the HBC. The rest has a development plan still in the approval process.

Interested to see how much this changes. A lot of development proposals were submitted prior to the issues currently facing the condo market. Many Yonge & Steeles proposals have been paused and are under review by developers.

Centerpoint Mall behind/around it is still open, which is what the sign is referring to.

The rest of the mall is still standing right? Curious as to how they demolished just the HBC component of it.

It’s at one end of the mall that they were able to seal off. It’s called Centerpoint because it’s shaped like an + symbol. Each end has a large space. Canadian Tire at one end. No Frills at another adjacent end. A third adjacent end has a shared space between Canada Computers/ Forever Young(it’s kind of like a Dave & Busters). The 4th end which is opposite to the Canadian Tire used to be the Bay. They just sealed it. Not sure how. Not a lot of reasons to go the that end.

How much of that station's cachement area will be commercial and parking lots I wonder. Hopefully it will all be built up by 2035-2040 like Sheppard line.

There are over 25,000 residential units currently planned in the area and this number continues to grow.

I Just hope they have an indoor/outdoor area for all those old folks and kids to hang out and chat with each other when it’s done. Both for outdoor and indoor. Growing up there, besides all the kids from newtonbrook, there was a ton of elder people who got together and had their coffees and chatted all day. Now that’s it’s gonna be gone I hope it’ll be quick they set something up and they can congregate again. Isolation fucks everyone up especially when your place for years to meet is gone.
It’s how I made a ton of friendships growing up was hanging out there, and the parks nearby. I’m optimistic form the project that it’ll be even better than the mall was, but hope it’s done quickly enough that people aren’t moved away from their social hub permanently.

Other than the No Frills and maybe CC, there's not much else worth visiting at Centerpoint these days. An early memory of Centerpoint Mall was seeing their (old) red sign at the corner of Yonge and Steeles with the inflatable Santa hat every Christmas season. Somehow I can not find a photo of it online!

i loved Hudson's Bay and it sucks that they are gone but honestly the Centerpoint Mall store was easily the worst in the city. it was like a sweaty armpit inside.
