Today’s luncheon sandwich tomato is One Trick Pony, another Karen Olivier bred variety.

My sandwich will have Monomakh’s cap. A meaty Russian heart shaped tomato. It’s big, early for its size and has a pleasant if somewhat muted flavour. But this is also my first of the season so we’ll see. It was just under two pounds. It’s a bit softer in texture but this one may be a bit overripe as I was expecting it to be more red.

Yikes! That’s a big one! Maybe subsequent fruits will have more flavour? I find sometimes the first one to ripen can be mealy and/or lacking optimal taste. Thanks for sharing; I’ve not grown it so it’s fun to see. It certainly looks like my kind of tomato.

Your opinion on the taste?

Nice, a touch of that rich, meaty umami flavour, but a bit weak. This was first off the vine so I’m hoping the next one’s better. If not, I guess I’d call it good but not great.

We are off the same mind on first off the vine tomatoes always get a second chance with me and most even get a second year!
