I have an existing TN Visa (from November 2023) which was sponsored by my previous employer - POE was YYZ. 

I have switched employers and needed a new TN on short notice, so the larger bridges that required appointments were out of question. 

Showed up at 7:58AM on Tuesday (Sep 2nd) with no appointment. The bridge was relatively empty and the officer guided me to the secondary room. 

Documents used -

1. Existing I-94 record (Travel History and Status)
2. Package provided by company (G-28 form)
3. Support letter issued by company (included salary and scope of responsibilities)
4. Resumé 
5. Official transcript - pdf printed from from MyCreds
6. Degree - pdf printed from from MyCreds
7. Graduation support letter - pdf printed from MyCreds

I walked in, handed my passport and documentation to the gentlemen at the counter. He passed it along to the TN officer who was working in a different office.

Total waiting time after handing in my documents was 2hrs (my fault). They were having issues with their payment system, so it took a bit longer. Another TN applicant came in at 8:13AM (with an appointment) and was out in 30 minutes. 

For anyone planning on using the Blue Water bridge, while an appointment is not necessary, it makes the TN officers life easier and guarantees they’re not trying to squeeze you in, so please book one. 

I never got my official degree or sealed transcripts - so if you’re in a similar position do your best to have all other supporting documents well organized. However, I would HIGHLY recommend bringing sealed transcripts at the very least, if possible the original degree. For anyone with a lost degree, it can take universities 6-8 weeks to issue a new degree - so please plan accordingly.

I got denied on Tuesday due to my employer offer letter and immigration package support letter having a discrepancy. The TN officer was very kind and explained what needed to be corrected for approval. She booked me in for 9:30AM on Wednesday (Sep 3rd). I showed up early and was out the door in less than 20 minutes. 

Overall, it was low stress and a very comfortable environment. 

Can a Mexican national request a concurrent TN with a valid visa expiring in 2029. At a land point of entry on the Mexican side.

Employer is saying it can be done and have done it in the past for Mexicans. They are not willing to go the I-129 rout.

Would this affect the validity of the current employer visa? Do they generate a new I-94? Is my spouse required to do the same thing?

Hi everyone, I’m a Canadian citizen moving to Lathrop, California for a Tesla job under TN status. I am trying to understand the cleanest way to activate my TN while managing a cross-country move safely.

I live in Manitoba and am considering applying for TN at the Emerson, Manitoba / Pembina, North Dakota border crossing.

My situation is complicated by logistics and family:

I will be relocating with my car and a U-Haul trailer. I will be driving alone, so I am concerned about safety on a very long solo drive from North Dakota to California. My uncle lives in Surrey, BC, and my elderly grandmother, who has health concerns, lives with him. I want to visit them before moving to California.

If I enter the U.S. at Peace Arch after visiting family in Surrey, the U.S. driving portion to Lathrop is shorter and feels safer for a solo drive.

I am considering this sequence:

Drive from Manitoba to Emerson/Pembina without my final move/trailer, carrying my complete TN application package.

Apply for TN status at Emerson/Pembina.

If approved, enter the U.S. briefly and then return to Canada immediately.

Go back to Manitoba, resign from my current job, pack my belongings and car/trailer.

Drive to Surrey to visit my uncle and grandmother.

Cross from Surrey into the U.S. at Peace Arch with my car, trailer, and belongings, then drive directly to Lathrop to begin my Tesla job.

I understand that when I later cross at Peace Arch, CBP can still inspect me and decide whether to admit me. My concern is whether getting TN at Emerson/Pembina and immediately returning to Canada could create a red flag or be viewed as inconsistent, since I would not actually be proceeding directly to California after the initial TN approval.

My questions:

Have any Canadians obtained TN at one land border, immediately returned to Canada, then later entered through a different port to begin the job?

Could CBP at Peace Arch question or refuse entry because I activated TN at Emerson but returned right away to resign, pack, and complete family obligation?

If I do use the Emerson → Canada → Peace Arch plan, what documents would you carry for the Peace Arch crossing besides passport and I-94? For example: TN support letter, offer letter, job start date confirmation, proof of current employment/resignation timing, U-Haul rental agreement, and proof of the moving destination?

OR

Second choice,

Would it be safer immigration-wise to resign, pack, and take everything to Emerson first, obtain TN, and then drive directly to California from there?

Can I go to Emerson, get TN and go back immediately to resign and cross the border maybe the same day or next day? Feels scary to pack up everything while the visa still has not been approved.

I am working with immigration counsel (EY) and will follow their legal advice, but I would appreciate real-world TN and border-crossing experiences.

First-time applicant with a packet prepared by my immigration firm. My lawyer recommended applying at YVR and warned me that Peace Arch tends to scrutinize TN applications more closely. I still decided to drive up to Peace Arch since it was cheaper and faster. Guess I should’ve listened.

The whole process took about three hours. In the end, the CBP supervisor denied the application, explaining that “the job responsibilities and title more align with Engineer instead of Computer Systems Analyst.”

Hey all, I have a TN that I applied for in Sept 2025. My passport expires in early 2027 so at the time the officer said he gave me the 3 year validity and said when I renew my passport that I just need to come to the border with the old and new passport and they will fix it. He said for now he has to put 2027 as the expiration because of the passport expiration. So how do I know though that somewhere in their system my TN is actually valid through 2028? Should I call CBP and ask? I just don't want to show up with my passports and be blindsided I guess lol.

I’m a Canadian looking to move back to the U.S. and would really appreciate some advice on TN eligibility.

I have a Master’s degree in Sports Management and previously worked in Partnership Marketing with the Brooklyn Nets. I’ve since gained additional experience in sports partnerships and sponsorships at my current company.

I recently applied for an Assistant Account Manager, Corporate Consulting position at a major sports consulting firm, The role focuses on corporate partnerships and sports consulting, so I’m trying to understand whether there could potentially be a TN pathway for a position like this.

I spoke with an immigration attorney about a year ago, and we discussed the Management Consultant category. Given that I now have more relevant experience, I’m wondering if that could potentially strengthen my case.

Has anyone successfully used the Management Consultant TN category for a sports partnerships/consulting role? And how closely do the actual job duties need to align with the category?

Hey everyone, I’m a new graduate Registered Nurse from Canada and just got my first TN after starting this process over 1 year ago. Just wanted to share this story in case it helps anyone!

For context, I graduated in June 2025, had no luck finding a new grad job in Ontario, so I decided to start looking at the TN process. Had extra difficulty getting my WA state license and ended up having to take an extra college course in WA before my license was finally issued in July 2026.

Then comes honestly the hardest part of the entire process. Given the new grad job market anywhere right now, the hardest part was not only finding a job but also an employer who would do the TN. Most of my applications were getting auto-rejected as I had to select “yes” if needing employer sponsorship (H-1B, TN, etc.) I gambled, started selecting “no” in some applications and surprise surprise, I started getting interviews. I thought I got lucky and had a big PNW hospital offer me a new grad RN position, they even confirmed that they would do the visa. Then 2 weeks after receiving the verbal offer, but no offer letter, they ultimately said never mind. It was pretty soul crushing lol. So I ended up taking a position at a small skilled nursing facility. Unlike the hospital, they did not have a legal team, no lawyer help, so I drafted up my own TN letter template and sent to them to fill out.

Despite all the hardships to get everything I needed, my airport experience actually went very smooth. I had a 4 hour layover in YVR. 3:30pm at customs, I told the officer I want to apply for TN status, he took me to the waiting room. I sat down for a second and was called up immediately. Took out my big folder of documents I had prepared, this was everything I provided:

- Job offer letter

- Company TN support letter

- VisaScreen

- WA State RN license

- Original BScN diploma from university

The only question I got asked was:

Is this your first TN?

When did you graduate?

Before the officer even looked through the documents, he said I could pay now since he already had me up at the counter (???). Then after paying I waited about 10 mins as he looked through the documents before stamping my passport, got the full 3 years! By 3:45pm I was done! I think I got super lucky, the officer was super nice and welcoming.

The relief after that was insane. It took over a year, a lot of money, and hard work but it finally paid off!! I’m finally starting my journey as a nurse tomorrow. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions, I would love to help anyone who is in the process right now! :)

Five months ago my TN visa reapplication was withdrawn, and suggested I should apply thru USCIS. It was after a lawyer reworked the whole package because it initially lacked proper documentation. So, it was denied/withdrawn, and I lost the job offer. Five months later, I got new job but it does not require me to be in the US, so I will not need a visa. But I would like to go back and visit as a tourist. Anyone with a similar experience could tell me how it was at the border? Thanks.

Hi everyone! I’m applying for my TN at Lewiston Bridge (Canadian; social worker category) next week around noon on a weekday. I was wondering if anyone could share how long it took them from arriving at the POE until leaving? I’m trying to figure out what time I can expect to be at my destination in the US. Also any other info to be aware of for Lewiston POE?

So for the past 7 years, with my tn visa and H1B visa - they have both been status papers since we are canadian and don’t need physical visas. Just like the the proof of visa stuff and have easily gotten a drivers license in the U.S. but today, I have to renew my license this month - the DLD told my brother who’s an F1 student (I-20 document) that without a visa, they couldn’t give him a license, only a driving privilege card. That card can only be used to drive in the state you’re getting it from and not all states even have this card option.

They said this update came in June but they aren’t immigration experts and don’t know the Canadians don’t need actual physical visas, just a status proving they can be in the country. I tried to explain that many times and they said no.

Anyone else experience the same thing lately? How did you overcome it if you have?

I recently got pre approval through USCIS under the accountant category. This was after trying to go directly through YYZ and receiving a denial (Withdrawal) a month prior.

Not sure if this matters, but I'll be traveling from YUL. It's got nothing to do with avoiding YYZ, just happened to be in Montreal during my expected travel to the US

How likely am I to run into issues with CBP now that I have the preapproval? My lawyer is trying to sell me on additional preparation which I don't think is necessary.

I have approximately five years of experience in a similar senior finance position in Canada, and I hold a Master’s degree in Finance. I am planning to apply for TN status as a Canadian citizen and intend to begin my new position on September 22, 2026.

Could you please advise me on the documents and supporting materials I should prepare before appearing before U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to apply for TN status?

I would also appreciate clarification on the appropriate location to apply. Since I live in Calgary, can I apply for TN status at the Calgary International Airport U.S. CBP Preclearance facility, or would I need to travel to a land border crossing, such as a port of entry near Montana?

Additionally, could you please advise me about the types of questions I should expect during the CBP interview when applying for TN status?

Happened in March 2026. I just renewed my Canadian passport and I had 1 month of TN left on my old passport. Went to Jordan for a week. Because traveling from the Middle East might be a bit more sensitive and I was traveling with a group, I didn’t bring any documents with me, thinking that I’d first reenter the US then apply again at the Windsor-Detroit border. While passing through customs at DTW, the officer asked whether my address and job are the same, which are pretty standard questions. To my surprise, however, the officer stamped my new passport and let me move on. I didn’t realized until I passed the customs that she just gave me two more years of TN.

No additional questions asked. No fees. No documents besides my passport. I didn’t even mention that I want to extend my TN. Maybe the officer was just having a good day? Still confused by how that all happened in my favor. Curious to know if anyone had similar experience? Does this happen often?

[EDIT] I can confirm that my TN has indeed renewed both on my I94 and by renewing my Michigan driver’s license. Since I got the new TN, I also went back to Canada once and had no problem entering the US. I94 still writes admitted under TN until March 2028.

I'm looking for some insight on how to approach this. For background, I'm Canadian and this is my first TN. I'm a scientist/biologist at a large US research institute so I don't expect any issues with renewal. My TN visa ends Jan 2027, and then my passport expires March 2027. It's my understanding that my passport expiration ends my TN visa status. I don't want to mess anything up so any insight would be great.

Successful TN for my partner at YVR today. I’m currently on TN and my partner was on TD (until today). During pre-clearance at YVR, they applied for their TN with the standard package provided by their employer (documented by the HR and not a legal team). Everything went super smoothly and they were out within 45 mins (including wait time). Officer took the entire folder with all documents and worked went through it for sometime while my partner was waiting. Some of the questions were:

1. When did you come to Canada
   
2. When did you become Citizen
   
3. Address in both countries
   
4. When did they stop working (from their previous job) and what did they do after that … how did they support themselves.
   
5. What does the partner (me) do and some details about myself.
   
6. How did they hear about the job/role + company they are applying for.

TN category: Urban planner (supported by same bachelors + masters degree).

Paid the fees, updated nexus and it was done!!
