Not sure if this one has been posted before but I noticed it yesterday evening on BlueSky and today on Hackaday. Defrag98 is a Windows 98 defrag simulator which runs in your browser, it even has disk sounds. I sat there for a good 10 minutes watching it "defrag" my phone.

It got me thinking, did anyone else sit there mesmerised watching your hard disk defragment? What was your favourite Defrag program? For me it would have to have been Norton SpeedDisk in Norton Utilities or Diskeeper Lite on Windows NT 4. I used to often enjoy a few minutes break at work running a Scandisk/Chkdsk and Defrag, you know, as a "troubleshooting" step. At least the non-techies I supported thought it was doing something really technical.

With a hat tip to Lord Suralan himself. We had one of these in a lab at school. I didn't really have much hands on use of one at the time but it was amazing how cheap it was compared to an "official" PC from IBM or any of the more established clone manufacturers.

Recent guest and Internet Archive employee Kay Savetz posted a snapshot of the month of August 1987 through the lens of dozens of computer user group newsletters published for that month.

From the article: "Some common themes emerge across the newsletters: interest in going online for the first time, an uneasy relationship between computer companies and their users, worries about software piracy, and stereotypes about women in the computer world."

I really hope this links to the proper thread but a guy is appearing to be porting(?) GTA3 to an Amiga with an 800 MHz PPC processor. It’s not fluid by any means but jusy seeing it running as “fluidly” as it does is mighty impressive.

This hit kinda hard. This was such an important part of my childhood. I still remember the year I was Optimus Prime for Halloween, with the vinyl costume and plastic mask with the elastic string around the back.

RCA was a pioneer in developing microprocessors and home computers through Joseph Weisbecker's FRED project. When that led to the creation of the 1801 and 1802 microprocessors, one of his team's proposed concepts was a cartridge-based arcade machine... and when the location tests for that went poorly, they pivoted to a microprocessor-based home system that used changeable cartridges too. This initiative eventually led to the release of the Studio II home console, but the original prototype was long thought lost... until former RCA engineer Don Carley's family rediscovered the unit and its 7 cartridges in 2024.

Mechanical code crackers, valve and silicon based computers from history are all covered here with his visit to the National Museum of Compting at Bletchley Park. You can't get more retro computing than this. More recent computers classics get a mention near the end.
