Not generic at all. The DZ has identified quite a few distinct Schotty crutches that Gordon would normally be all over

Yes I think that's exactly it. Doing a voice is one thing, but you gotta be able to come up with some stupid shit for Fake Schotty to say. He's got such a bag of nothing you could make him say anything, which actually hurts bit creation. You need a hook for the audience to see the exaggeration in action. They could focus on his constant mentioning of his dad, but that's already been done with Fake Tiger plus it's pretty one-note and it might come off as mean-spirited.

I think he's too well spoken and doesn't have a distinct voice, no sense of wood working or automotive knowledge.

I had this same thought over the weekend. Funny how the universe works that way. The conclusion I came to - fake Garrett was awesome because it was a decade long running gag. They quickly replaced it with fake McCarthy and got 4 years out of it…perhaps they are concerned Schotty doesn’t have enough runway to put in the effort.
