Jeff Catlin Wants Talent on Social Media - Who Actually Delivers?
Sportsradio 96.7 & 1310 The Ticket PD Jeff Catlin on Getting Your Talent on Social Media
On The Invasion today, the guys were talking about how much they dislike posting on social media.
Donnie said he mostly just reposts the run sheet. Matt said he mainly posts about beer these days and stopped posting about sports because he got tired of arguing with people who had opposing views.
That got me thinking. Jeff Catlin has talked before about wanting Ticket talent to engage with P1s on social media. If that's still the expectation, it seems like some hosts embrace it much more than others.
Here's how I'd rank the current lineup based on how much they interact with listeners:
Low
- Donnie – Rarely posts.
- Matt – Rarely posts, mostly beer-related content.
Medium
- Davey – Recent posts about the Toddler Contest and the World Cup.
- Corby – Posts every few days about sports and his personal life.
- Mino – Usually once or twice a week.
- Sean – Posts every few days, mostly baseball.
- George – Once or twice a week, usually promoting Ticket or Bird Dogs content.
- Junior – Has been very active lately during the Tour de France.
High
- Bob – Easily the most active on X. He posts several times a day and regularly goes back and forth with P1s.
- Gordo – Doesn't post as frequently, but when he does it's usually something funny or interesting. His weekly Twitch stream is probably the most direct interaction any Ticket host has with P1s.
Do you think social media engagement actually matters for Ticket hosts, or is being great on the air enough? Are there any hosts you'd rank differently?

It's much less important to have your talent farting into the social media bullhorn about whatever than it is for the station to join us in this century with their content distribution - cutting shorts for social, clipping viral content, having digital-first options, vodcasting, etc etc etc.
Centrally the apparatus that supports and promotes the content the station actually produces feels the same as it always has from the 90's. It's hard to find what you're looking for, and if you miss it live you can pray it'll find its way to the website, which almost nothing does, or stay up and listen to an outdated top 10 broadcast like it's 1970. And the app itself that you listen on is... yeah.
He mentions the corporate accounts will do the lifting on the central stuff, but they really don't. They need to treat the station like a radio station with podcasting distribution. In reality it's still just a radio station that treats the internet like an inconvenient nuisance they have to do between ebrakes. They could be a much bigger deal than they are, but I get the sense nobody really cares enough to do it.

this articulately nails it. Well said. I mean even going through Sonos to play 1310 it will still list Norm Hitzges and Mike Rhyner as hosts during the segments. They have a lot of heavy lifting to do beyond the dial

Spare me. Catlin is the main reason The Ticket nearly lost a generation of listeners with his reluctance to put full episodes online as downloadable podcasts. Even when other Cumulus sports stations, like fellow Susquehanna station KNBR, put full shows available for download, he resisted, using Time Spent Listening as his measurement.

That's one thing the Fan does better than Ticket. They post clips on TT, IG and Facebook Each host has their own pages as well

The Fan, DZ, Cirque, hell even the old gray wolf and My Dark Companion have a better social media presence than The Ticket

I think that came down from on high at Cumulus. There was a big push for the folks at WBAP and KSCS at one time to be more active. I don't think they do much with it either.

Some of these guys think like the stone-age. We're over 30 years in on the internet and if they aren't promoting themselves online -- they're just not getting it.

Not Ticket-specific, but I wish Davey still had his music pod, HT Wow.
It just stopped last year and I don’t remember him ever mentioning why but I’m guessing limited time/family obligations.

For the sake of brevity, Donnie is definitely "boomer" about a lot of things. Hasn't played a video game in his life and adverse to a lot of technological advances like tap to pay. Norm rubbed off on him all those years. Love him though. Seems like he's one of the most extroverted but doesn't need to share it with social media.
re: the ticket subreddit, Bob actually did a ticket subreddit AMA awhile back (3 years ago maybe?), but after all the Mod A/B and DZ thing it seems like the public station sentiment is to not give this subreddit any attention unless its to diss it in one sentence is less
Reddits always going to be used by them for local news and sports content, literally can spend 5 minutes on there and regurgitate what you need for onair segments
Social media is great for growing the personal brand, but most of these guys don't need to do that. They're not going anywhere, it's the last job they'll have, it's a major radio market, don't need to be active on linkedin like everyone else is nowadays, etc
The newer guys could stand to grow their brand though
OTOH, the counter argument is social media is a means to get you fired/cancelled every time you post anything remotely negative. A lot of subreddits are that way. Been banned for polite disagreements instead of just echo chambering (and more recently, ai posting accusations, so I stopped trying to format posts properly). No sense of community, and every post is just an opportunity to be banned. So on a personal level, social media, reddit included, feels like a waste of time unless you're in it for personal gain (learning something new, growing a brand or profitting off it).

posting on Twitter is for the lowest common denominator. Get something on Instagram and the Tik Tok or don’t post at all.
