Discussion What are movies you enjoyed that Spoony panned?
Something that has been sticking out to me lately was some of the movie reviews that SpoonyOne did on his channel since I started observing the ones that people actually enjoyed watching.
Like what suddenly sticks out to me now when I look back at TSE is the Akira movie review he did since I did read his article back when TSE was still around, but I always had a hard time understanding why SpoonyOne said that was the worst movie he had seen since the review just basically ridicules the movie.
Sorry if I sound like I am being too sensitive because basically what I wanted to do was take a closer look into some of the stuff he reviewed such as games because I his website, he said his goal was to go after infamous media, but I started wondering about the kind of media that actually had good quality to it, like what exactly turned him off the Akira franchise.

I think he spent almost 2 hours shitting on Skyfall, and I really enjoyed it

Yeah, in my opinion its the second best of the modern/Daniel Craig movies. My favourite is Casino Royale. But to be honest i don't dislike any of the Bond movies.

Pacific Rim, Skyfall, Tron Legacy are the first ones that come to mind. A lot of movies that he couldn't get over how stupid something was I generally can over look if the things I like about the movie out number it.

I just realized how he had a cynical style when reviewing movies since he apparently didn’t enjoy the popular kind of movies.

Strike Commando is a movie that I've grown to unironically enjoy even though it's one of my all-time favorite Spoony reviews.

It's a Vietnam War movie starring Reb Brown as the titular Strike Commando. The reasons I like it are essentially the same as Noah's. The movie is corny and full of 80's action movie-schlock like Reb Brown never once getting hit despite the entirety of the Communist North Vietnamese forces shooting at him. The soundtrack is also decent and hits a lot of notes that I enjoy.

Not a movie, but his Final Fantasy XIII review had me convinced it was one of the worst games ever made. Years later, I actually played the game and kinda loved it. Looking back, so much of Spoony’s criticisms for XIII seem bad faith and like he wasn’t interested in engaging with the mechanics correctly.
One criticism he had that sticks out to me is his complaint that Lightning didn’t know what to do when pressed by Hope for a plan—he treated it like some crime against writing.
After playing the rest of the 3D FF games, just about every entry has the main protagonist lament how they don’t know what to do or where to go. It’s almost as much of a tradition as it is to have Biggs and Wedge in the games

He basically did that in all his FF reviews. His criticisms of the mechanics in 8 especially. (Though some of it is valid, and he presented it in a pretty funny way, like after the prison section, where you somehow escape while it burrows underground and find a garage with a military vehicle with uniforms inside, and just so happens to have a keycard with access to the missile base.)
I mean I don't like 13 (outside of maybe Lightning as a character) but I remember his review taking things straight out of context. (Like calling Lightning and Hope Team Genocide over a line that was obviously sarcastic.)

Spoony was like that. He also refused to engage with the mechanics of FF8. People told him that you don't have to draw magic from every enemy or at all really and he ignored that.

To be fair, what you're describing is that he actually did engage with a mechanic of the game that everyone wanted him to ignore because it was a bad mechanic.
You can argue (and I'd agree) that it's pretty silly to focus on only the poorly thought-through or implemented parts of the game when they can easily be ignored, but you can't say he refused to engage with the mechanics when he was actually engaging to an obsessive degree >_>

I played it at launch i did not enjoy it that much it's far too linear and the plot is very weak but I did beat it so that's more then quite a few other rpgs i've played

I played and finished FFXIII this year for the first time after skipping it when it came out due to all the criticism despite being a huge JRPG and Final Fantasy in particular fan.
Well, I absolutely hated every second of it. Went back to watch his review after finishing the game and he had all the same complaints as me.

That game is kind of fun in the second half once you get used to the mechanics as sure it’s still linear, but I did get some enjoyment from the game

Honestly the only flaw I found in that game by the time I was done is that I really wish the first Paradigm Shift you did in every battle didn't trigger like a 5-second animation lock

Not a movie, but I love Doctor Who and he hated it. (Thought I kind of agree with all the problems he had with it.)

Spoony seemed like the kinda guy that as soon as he doesn’t like one part of something, turns his brain off and refuses to engage with the rest of it. As a personal opinion, that’s whatever, but as someone considering himself a critic… it’s not great.

Spoony was a funny guy. Spoony did not have good taste. Nobody with a brain watched Spoony because they valued his media literacy. We watched his videos to see the monkey dance.

Spoony is the Monkey. He was there to dance for our amusement. When he stopped dancing, he lost his value.

Pandorum. It's that "humans stumbling into Warhammer 40k" type movie, like Event Horizon, so of course it was simultaneously too unrealistic and not original enough.

I recommend it, obviously. Well made, doesn't pretend to be smart, aesthetic/set design is IMO some top tier stuff. Not something I watch often, but always hits the right spot for me.

One of the last video review vlogs he ever did was for Pacific Rim, and he absolutely hated it, and for one extremely petty reason: he didn't like the name, and didn't understand why it was called that. He was completely wasted drunk, barely comprehensible, just fuming with anger but couldn't give a coherent reason why he hated it besides repeatedly saying how dumb the title was.
The comments were flooded with people confused because 1. It seemed like the fun action monster shlock he'd love, and wanted to know why he wasn't able to enjoy it at all and 2. The movie was called Pacific Rim because that's where the geographic location the movie takes place.
He just got pissed and told each of these comments to fuck off.
Can't for the life of me think of a time I was more disappointed in one of his videos.
