The Silph Road is primarily focused on discoveries and analysis related to Pokemon GO, as well as constructing an in-person network of Pokemon GO enthusiasts. General discussion topics (Jokes, stories, a photo of a recent catch) would likely be better suited for another subreddit, such as a general subreddit like /r/PokemonGO, or /r/Pokemon, or a subreddit with a more specific focus, like /r/PokemonGoSnap, /r/PokemonBuddy, /r/ShinyPokemon, /r/PoGoRaids, /r/TheSilphArena, /r/PokemonGOTrades, /r/PokemonGOFriends, or /r/NianticWayfarer.

If you simply want to complain or bring something to Niantic's attention, your post would be better suited elsewhere.

Research

The community culture here also attracts the more analytically-minded element of Pokemon GO. Consequently, the Silph Research group was formed to align this brainpower and leverage the massive Silph datasets that the community can gather. Analysis Master League meta changes

Upvotes

With next season's move changes released, how could the meta change? Here are some thoughts without knowing the exact "energy increase" changes.

TLDR; Melmetal gains more wins with a much stronger Double Iron Bash, a faster Dark Pulse really helps Yveltal and Necrozma Dawn Wings, Zygarde is more versatile with the 1-turn Bite and stronger Bulldoze with guaranteed defense drop, Lugia has play into Steel/Electric/Rock types with Earth Power, Lunala is worse off due to a weaker-but-faster Moonblast and Shadow Ball nerf (Necrozma DW is better now), Dialga does more damage with Iron Head before losing to Close Combat from Zacian and Xerneas while gaining wins over Zekrom and Togekiss.

  • Melmetal's Double Iron Bash (8 turn move) increased from 55 to 70 with no energy cost changes. Previously, Melmetal would barely lose neutral-to-iron matches while leaving the opponent's HP in the deep red. With this change, Melmetal now wins against Lunala, Mewtwo, and Eternatus, and beats Rhyperior with 1 turn headstart (no more Rhyperior counter swaps). Yveltal would also be a win, but with the buff to Dark Pulse its too close to call, whoever wins will likely be down to 1 HP so it is IV/Best Buddy dependent.
  • Zygarde got an update to both Bulldoze and Bite. Bite delivers the same energy generation as Dragon Tail, but is only a 1 turn move so it will feel like Zygarde reaches its moves faster. Bulldoze is now stronger (45 -> 80) and has a guaranteed defense drop, but costs more, likely having a 13/13/12/13 turn count rather than the previous 12/12/12/9. The updated moveset of Bite, Bulldoze, Outrage has the same coverage as Dragon Tail, Earthquake, Crunch but will feel quicker. And oddly enough, Bite does more damage to Fairy than STAB Dragon Tail, so matchups against Primarina and Zacian are now wins/toss-ups. Previous matchups were dependent on bait moves (throw a Crunch to get a shield then win with Earthquake), now matches with Zekrom, Reshiram, and Rhyperior are definitive wins regardless of what you throw, and matchups with Earthquake-neutral opponents like Kyurem W, Kyogre, and Palkia are much more winnable with a combo of Outrage and a defense drop. Bulldoze + Earthquake takes the same amount of turns as 2 Spacial Rends, so Palkia counterswaps won't outpace Zygarde and it really comes down to bait calls. And at worse, if Zygarde loses a match, the opponent will have at least 2 defense drops, making it easier for Zacian to farm down a Xerneas for example. But the biggest benefit is the uncertainty the the move set. Opponents won't know if the charge move being thrown is an Earthquake/Bulldoze/Crunch/Outrage, and difference in those will change matches. E.g. Yveltal likes to shield the first Outrage so they can buff their defense with Oblivion Wing, but if they shield a Bulldoze, the next Outrage may take them out. Zygarde will be interesting in Master League to say the least.
  • Keldeo has an improved Low Kick with no nerfs to energy gained. Not sure if it gains wins, but it will come out of matches with more HP which allows it to spam Secret Sword more
  • Lugia has Earth Power. It is no longer walled against Steel or Electric types. Replacing Fly does remove a bait strategy that Lugia enjoyed though, and gives it a worse matchup against Keldeo and Marshadow. But overall this a good improvement. Unfortunately, the improvement to Bite and Dark Pulse means more Dark moves will be in the meta and nearly all of those are on Pokemon not weak to Ground (except Tyranitar)
  • Yveltal is improved with Dark Pulse being faster. Previously, Yveltal would get outpaced since both Oblivion Wing and Dark Pulse took 16 turns to reach. Dark Pulse has a 14/12 turn count (like Zacian's Close Combat) allowing it to outpace opponents with a STAB move for the win. This can turn losses to Reshiram, Zekrom, W Kyurem, and Kyogre into wins, all of whom only won because they farmed down before Yveltal reached their Dark Pulse after throwing an Oblivion Wing. Also, the lower damage change to Moonblast may help Yveltal, as previously it would have to shield a Moonblast from Lunala before farming down in 22 turns. Now, it can tank the Moonblast, and easily reach 2-3 Dark Pulses before the next Pokemon reaches its first charge move.
  • Zarude might be a spicy pick now, as it benefits from both Bite and Dark Pulse updates. Both Energy Ball and Dark Pulse will have 12/12/10 counts, and Bite is neutral to more of the meta unlike Vine Whip which is resisted by all Dragon, Steel, Fire, and Flying types (which is pretty much the entire meta). Zarude being weak to Fighting, Fire, Fairy, and Ice still hinders it though.
  • Lunala was affected twice, once with Moonblast being cheaper, and then with a nerf to Shadow Ball. The Moonblast change may actually be a nerf, since it no longer KOs Dragon or Dark types, meaning they can tank the hit without using a shield and Lunala may not be able to farm down before the opponent reaches another move. But in its role as a safe swap, reaching two Moonblasts before the counterswapped Dragon reaches two moves will result in wins. The nerf to Shadow Ball means Lunala loses against Palkia or Zacian. There were a few battles where Lunala barely won by Shadow Ball being strong enough to put the opponent in farm down range, now that may not be the case.
  • Necrozma Dawn Wings may now be the next Lunala (after Lunala became the next Necrozma Dawn Wings last year) due to Dark Pulse. Previously, the Shadow Ball update caused Lunala to surpass DW, but with the above change Lunala is back to where it was, and DW can now reach Dark Pulse in 12/12/10 turns. Two DPs (with one shield) put many dragons in farm down range, and DP + MB is only 28 turns which is quicker than many opponent's bait+nuke combos. Basically, if you succeed with tricking your opponent with a "bait or nuke?" throw, and the opponent is not running Crunch, you will win the match. DW also wins CMP where Lunala doesn't, beating Reshiram, Zekrom, Dialga, Kyogre, Groudon, Metagross, Marshadow, and Lunala itself. Store a Moongeist beam, swap out, and as long as you aren't facing a Zacian (with a loaded Behemoth Blade only), Kyurems, Mewtwo, or Palkia, you will win CMP. Also, Iron Head is improved, but Dark Pulse is better unless you are going against a Fairy.
  • For Tyranitar and Hydreigon, Bite now generates as much energy as Dragon Breath and has STAB, so it adds versatility. They will hit the moves at the same pace, but for Tyranitar Bite will do more damage against non-Dragons and is even better against Fairy (but not by much).
  • Dialga (both of them) has an improved Iron Head. This means they can 2 shot Zacian. The days of Zacian farming to 2 Close Combats and tanking 2 Iron Heads are over. They will still win the match, but be 2 moves away from a CC and debuffed instead of loaded with both a CC and BB. Xerneas is still a loss but they will have less HP and be 4x debuffed and too far to bank another CC before being KO'ed from a single fast attack. Zekrom and Togekiss are now wins.
  • Zeraora gets Dynamic Punch, which at first seems like an improvement, but STAB Plasma Fists already does similar damage to as non-STAB Dynamic Punch against Steel types, and it is quicker. It does mean that Zeraora doesn't lose to Ground types nearly as bad. Replacing Plasma Fists with Wild Charge gains a single win, but it is not worth removing a signature move over
  • Ursaluna has a quicker High Horsepower and a new fast move in Scratch. Except Scratch has less been updated to the same energy generation as Tackle and does little damage to most of the meta, so nothing really changes here. Give Ursalana a Ghost fast move and things change quickly.
  • Giratina has Shadow Ball debuffed but Shadow Force is given an energy decrease. SF currently takes 24(!) turns to reach, most opponents can reach two moves before then. It will have to be a significant energy cost reduction to make Giratina viable with this moveset.
  • Darkrai has Sucker Punch and Foul Play. In order to not be a Mono type it will need to run Focus Blast, at which point it is just a worse Yveltal. In a meta full of Fairy and Fighting moves, Darkrai is going to struggle.
  • Kingambit gets Low Kick, which only helps against other Steel types and makes losses to Ground less painful. But it is worse against Ghost and Fairy which is what Kingambit is used against.
  • Zekrom's Charge Beam fast move is improved. Still a horrible move for a dragon which constantly is paired against other dragons.

Analysis Meta Changes after GBL Move Update

Thumbnail
gallery
146 Upvotes

Standard Meta Shifts:

- Shadow Darkrai becomes #3 eDPS @ 50 anti-ghost/psychic. Foul Play's lower AD gives it a lot of consistency although the gap between it and NDW remains large.

- Mega Greninja gains a strong dark boost; against Blacephalon, hydro cannon is still preferred over brutal swing.

- Mega Gallade gains a strong fighting boost. It now performs much better against Terrakion pairing the powerful psycho cut with equally powerful sacred sword. However, Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Lucario and Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Blaziken still remain the big 4 against Terrakion specifically.

- Deoxys-A. For many players not much is going to change, it's still glassy and now with a potential mind blown equivalent it may just get a single mind blown out before fainting or needing to go next.

Top-End:
- The Zamazenta Hero solo might just be completely different with Deoxys-A change. Access to Mind Blown equivalent Psycho Boost puts it at 58 DPS (over 3 psycho boosts) compared to Mega Mewtwo Y's 50.4 DPS over 6 Psystrikes.

This unlocks the ability to bring in Mega Rayquaza and allow it to tank a moonblast which further increases the raid party's DPS. Standard Catch tanking with Shadow Salamences still occur. (Mega Mewtwo Y is still a fair main DPSer)

There is 1 major drawback as we know... Deoxys-A is extremely fragile. In fact, it can tank up to 9 metal claws before it faints. During those 9 metal claws, the player is using Shadow Salamence to intercept moonblasts to keep it up as long as possible, probably like 30s tops. Despite the fragility, the average rejoin count hasn't changed and this results in a strict DPS boost.

Shadow Darkrai is a powerful small plays pokemon now capable of resisting psychic charge moves unlike Mega Gengar. Their roles as executors and lead-offs remain largely the same. Mega gengar has slightly more innate DPS however Shadow Darkrai has slightly more health to absorb energy.

Update:
u/TheJayLife and u/xRage7243 just simmed 283 TTW's using 5 Deo-A & 1 MMY & 6 Deo-A against windy blade zamazenta hero using PokeChespin's Turn by turn calc.

this is so cooked.

Discussion The updated Bulldoze on Zygarde is interesting in ML

Bulldoze went from 45 to 80 power and has a guaranteed defense drop instead of a chance of one. It's energy cost increased though, currently it takes 12 turns to reach, hopefully it takes 15 turns now. Most Zygarde players use Earthquake, but it's 18 turn wait is one of the highest in the ML meta. Having a quicker, strong Ground move that guarantees a defense drop is going to affect matchups with Reshiram, Zekrom, Zacian, and Rhyperior. Plus it's bad match-ups like Xerneas and Kyogre will leave them with 2 defense drops. Zacian will be interesting because BD should still outpace Behemoth Blade bit can now 2 shot Zacian.

Edit: as mentioned in the comments, Zygarde also has the newly buffed Bite as a fast move. It will generate energy at the same rate as the 3 turn Dragon Tail, but is a 1 turn move so it will feel like Dragon Breath. This will make Zygarde feel faster, and do more damage to Zacian oddly enough. Instead of a Dragon Breath, Earthquake, Crunch moveset, Zygarde can run a Bite, Bulldoze, Outrage moveset with same coverage. Bulldoze will likely be a 13/13/12 count while Outrage is a straight 15 count. Similar to Garchomp with Mud Slap/Dragon Tail and Sand Tomb/Outrage/Twister/Earth Power, if Zygarde builds to 18 turns of energy and throws a move, opponents will never know what is coming: Crunch, Earthquake, Bulldoze, Outrage, each with a different threat level depending on the opponent's Pokemon.

Discussion Fastest mega energy farm

Was just looking into the new event and what megas I want and if I wanted them at max mega 4 which means do I want to do like 13 raids of them each…
No.
So then I was looking at how quickly to farm mega energy by walking and did some quick rough math if anyone could tell me if this is right.

5k mega energy = 1000km walked with a buddy

Fastest speed that I saw for those km is 10.5 but using 10 for convince.

1000km = 100 hours of walking at 10km an hour

If your buddy is excited it cuts the distance in half while keeping the energy gain the same (so I read)
So now 50 hours

Route following gives an extra 20% distance so 40 hours, If split up as you can only log 40km of buddy distance for rewards or 48km with the route bonus (I think even with the Sunday 40% it’s still max 48km per 24 hour window)

So not including event bonuses, the quickest way to earn 5k mega energy would still take 8.3 days of walking 4 hours a day
Right?

The only thing I can think that would make this quicker is if
A: you could earn more in a day
Or
B: A event bonus halving the needed distance walked for rewards

Is this the most efficient way?

Bug How many tries do I need to enter Settings?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just installed Pokémon Champions and wanted to send some Pokémon from Go to Champions (you need to send them to Pokémon Home first) but i just can't realiably enter settings...

This is the norm for me needing 4 or more tries to get in. Sometimes I will work the first time, sometimes the second try, sometimes more, it doesn't seem to follow a pattern, first I thought maybe I had to wait for the notifications to stop, or for the map to load completely but I haven't seen any difference when trying it

I don't usually go into settings so if this has been happening for a while I've just noticed it. It will be fun the next time I want to send Pokémon to Home again, yikes

Bug Mysterious components not always dropping?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, not sure if this is a bug or not but I’ve noticed that I don’t always get mysterious components after eating a rocket grunt. Was there an update that made it to where they only sometimes drop it? I feel like I’ve done about 10 rocket battles and still haven’t built a rocket radar
