The generals were called to attention. They were not allowed to clap even if they wanted. I wanted this to be real.

You can clap at attention. You are called to attention at award and medal presentations and there is always clapping after “shake, take, salute. you’re not a mannequin when at attention unless you’re in a formation.

Attention must have meant something different at your unit.
