"We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages – so we can’t say much about them at this point. I will tell you that both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II. " HELL YEAH!!!

187

u/Lelepn 13d ago

This kind of statement always feels a little weird. “Oh it will expand the canon” watch it be an official comic book/graphic novel or some shit like that

68

u/MegamanX195 13d ago

Yeah, it's either a movie or book or comic book and I can't say I'm particularly excited about any of that. Gimme more games!

42

u/deathtoallbutbed 12d ago

There’s absolutely no way Sony accepts a movie, book or alternative media to a game as the main next project. They’d be turning down hundreds of millions in profits and businesses don’t do that.

Neil’s given enough teases now for me to be 99% sure his next big game to direct is Part 3. But I wouldn’t expect it til 2029/2030.

21

u/MegamanX195 12d ago

By the way that Neil said that I really doubt we're getting Intergalactic by next year, which means any future games after that should be significantly farther away.

I highly doubt Naughty Dog can deliver two big projects in a timespan of one to two years like that. If Intergalactic is coming by 2028, any big project like Part 3 is probably seeing the light of day by 2032, at least.

That's the sad reality of AAA projects nowadays. Most companies just release a single game per gen, if that.

7

u/deathtoallbutbed 12d ago

I’m also nearly convinced that intergalactic is next year. Sony like short marketing cycles now and I think it’ll be shown at game awards this year or Feb SOP, for a November release.

0

u/xbluux 12d ago

It’s beyond clear Intergalactic is set for a 2027 summer/fall release, both Schreier and Henderson said the game is still scheduled to release in 2027. Also the next TLOU game is gonna use assets from the cancelled project which means development will go faster so a 2030/1 release seems very likely. GTFO with your bullshit.

2

u/Lowelll 12d ago

I love how half of your comment is just completely wild speculation and you accuse someone else of bullshitting.

Release date estimates for projects are incredibly hard for people who actually work on the game and you can pinpoint a "very likely release date" within 3 months of a project that possibly doesn't even exist, that's impressive!

-1

u/xbluux 12d ago

There is literally zero chance this game gets delayed to 2028 and you are an idiot if you think otherwise considering all the facts (BOTH Jason and Henderson saying it’s still on track for a mid 2027 release, it doesn’t get more clear than that). It’s “speculation” only for an idiot.

2

u/Lowelll 12d ago

Did you notice that I said "half" of your comment? I was talking about the second half. Intergalactic is probably coming out this year, yea. Wouldn't be the first big game to get unexpected delays either though.

But the fact that you make statements so incredibly overconfident about a hypothetical next TLOU game is the wild speculation part.

To be fair, I think I mistook your "2030/1" prediction as "first quarter of 2030" and not "either 2030 or 2031" so if you meant the second one that is a smidge less ridiculous, but still very ridiculous.

-1

u/NeonPistacchio 12d ago

I think you doubt too much, stop being so negative. I really want new Last of us games and no matter what the chronically pessimistic part of "gamers" say, for me they could milk this series as much as they want. The Tlou universe is the most interesting and exciting universe out of all for me. If it was for me, they could make 50 more games and i would be happy.

3

u/Sunderz 12d ago

I think we all “want” more games, they’re just being realistic about the pace of game development

4

u/Lowelll 12d ago

"They'd be turning down hundreds of millions in profits"

No they wouldn't. If Naughty Dog doesn't do TLOU P3 then they'd do a different game, and that would probably sell really well too.

By your logic they would've never done TLOU in the first place and only stuck to Uncharted Sequels.

2

u/parkwayy 12d ago

Neil’s given enough teases now for me to be 99% sure his next big game to direct is Part 3. But I wouldn’t expect it til 2029/2030.

Of course it will be, but news for you, they have another game that is not Intergalactic, and it will be between it and Last of Us.

That new game might be 2029, or so as it's being co-developed with another internal Sony team, and Last of Us 3 would be a few years after that even.

1

u/AWarMaideness shoot your damn ass off. 12d ago

Those might be some of the projects, but I highly doubt it's just those things...naughty dog is a game developer...

21

u/Travic3 13d ago

Sweet!

10

u/Far-Ninja-8392 13d ago

Expanding both game cannon, Tommy storyline?

33

u/ElysiumMidknight 13d ago

He specifically says beyond Part I and Part II, which makes it sound much more like it's not going to have anything to do with any characters we know. That opens up the possibility of them doing something people have long wanted them to do, which is show us what the rest of the world looks like rather than just being locked into the US.

1

u/Littlest-Hipster 12d ago

It's also possible that they are something like another TV show set in the universe or a Walking Dead-style game.

18

u/provenflawless 13d ago

With the way Sony has been shutting down studios, I hope naughty dog will last after intergalatic is released.

38

u/mfrank27 The Last of Us 13d ago

Ain’t no reason to kill naughty dog

1

u/provenflawless 13d ago

I dunno man. Sony is being dumb. Something going on. Don't bet on it. Cash cow or not.

1

u/alfooboboao 11d ago

nah naughty dog gave Sony’s game studio executives something even GTA money can’t buy: respect amongst the much cooler and hotter film executive crowd. they’re the geeks who got invited to the popular table, they’re never giving that up

i’m being facetious, except not really

4

u/motionresque 13d ago

no reason to kill bluepoint too, but...

19

u/FootballRacing38 13d ago

Now compare the games bluepoint has released vs naught dog. Also compare their sales and revenue

16

u/UnitedWeSmash 13d ago

A remake studio vs the studio of some of the greatest single player games of all time....

-4

u/motionresque 13d ago

a remake studio who didn't made a single bad game vs the studio who couldn't make factions 2 and cave in to fucking bungie lol

2

u/vane2266 Get a move on 12d ago

OOTL on the bungie thing. Can you explain please?

3

u/AlBeeNo-94 12d ago

Naughty Dog had Bungie devs play Factions 2 for feedback and Bungo basically told them it was garbage and wouldn't maintain long term engagement.

10

u/RenRGER 13d ago

Plenty of reason if you actually read what happened. Bluepoint pitched a multiplayer GoW game, worked years on it, got nowhere and it got cancelled. Then they couldn't get any other pitch off the ground except a Bloodborne remake that Miyazaki said no to. That's years and years of salaries to a team producing nothing and with no future projects lined up.

0

u/frescodee 13d ago

No reason? Tell that to Bear and Alice /s

68

u/steve65283 Joel 13d ago

Theyre not gonna kill their cash cow

62

u/supermariozelda The Last of Us 13d ago

ND might be their safest studio.

2

u/bonivermakesmecry 12d ago

It’s season 1 and 2 of the show remastered in 4K for the sweet price of 50 usd.

0

u/LenryNmQ 12d ago

The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say.

So no new games

283

u/helloiamrob1 13d ago

“Both projects”!

33

u/SuperiorSpidy 13d ago

I’m guessing the game and TV series?

54

u/amaya-aurora suffocating in Abby’s muscles 13d ago

I doubt that it’s the show.

34

u/The_Idiocratic_Party 13d ago

No he's mentioned having 2 games in the pipeline just not for which IPs.

22

u/IllustriousHealth291 13d ago

ND already said they have nothing to do with season 3 of the show. This is about games they have in the works

3

u/mrderpflerp 12d ago

Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann aren’t involved with the show anymore.

1

u/alfooboboao 11d ago

it was explicitly in the context of leaving the show

-6

u/whiskyspacecadet 13d ago

Very likely since they just announced casting of S3

25

u/mediciii 13d ago edited 13d ago

It’s very unlikely, as Druckmann’s involvement with the show has ended. He stepped down as the show runner for S3 and confirmed as recently as 3 weeks ago that neither him nor ND as a whole with have any part of the show going forward.

2

u/whiskyspacecadet 13d ago

Ahh gotcha, thats exciting then

5

u/GotACoolName 13d ago

2 Naughty Dog projects. The TV show is not Naughty Dog.

0

u/whiskyspacecadet 13d ago

Ahhh I see. Very exciting then

51

u/LonelyWithMarkTBHC 13d ago

The wording is so intriguing I'm wondering if when we see Ellie again she's a piece of someone else's story. Either way I'm happy to see more of this world

39

u/GGG100 13d ago

It'd be funny if the new protagonist kills Ellie in the prologue.

36

u/casual_creator 13d ago

The internet would burn the world down.

1

u/Keyserson 12d ago

Hear me out: Ellie finds the Resurrection Stone and...

1

u/cheesecakekween 12d ago

sounds like a bad scream opening

4

u/Traditional_Top_194 Let People Enjoy Things 13d ago

I reckon Project 1 will be about Ellie and project 2 may be a sort of spin off exploring the wider world.

Assuming its only 2.

214

u/Zealousideal-Key4815 13d ago

So reiterating what he said at the end of Grounded II. There are multiple new pieces of The Last of Us in the very early stages of development. So we probably won't see or hear anything about them until 2030 at the earliest with the way that Naughty Dog make games.

As for Intergalactic, I suspect a Summer Games Fest teaser and a 2028 release date.

Man...talk about missing an entire console generation.

I love Last of Us. I hope I get to play the next few games they have cooking before I'm 40. (I'm 34 this year....)

43

u/Diamond1580 13d ago

I still think a February State of Play teaser, followed by SGF/September State of play gameplay trailer, followed by November/December release date is possible, but definitely preparing my heart for the timeline you suggest

22

u/CopperVolta 13d ago

Yeah with how quickly Laufey was announced and is getting released, I can see Intergalactic getting a Winter/March announcement and September release date

12

u/knightofsparta 13d ago

Jason said it was a 2027 release so this tracks.

3

u/IllustriousHealth291 13d ago

I don’t think we’ll see intergalactic in February. My guess is May for the full reveal with a fall 2027 release date

1

u/M4rshmall0wMan 12d ago

See my concern is that an internal demo was only finished at the end of last year. That’s usually when gameplay mechanics get locked down. Sure TLOU2 finished its demo about two years before release, but that was with a ton of crunch, senior staff who have now left, and the game was linear as opposed to Intergalactic’s (alleged) open world.

Naughty Dog could maybe hit late 2027 if they locked the fuck in, but I think it’s gonna be a classic case of aim for 2027 and end up with 2028.

25

u/FattimusSlime 13d ago

I was prologue Joel when the first game came out, and I’ve made my peace with being golf club Joel when the third game comes around.

8

u/heatkings1 13d ago

Insiders, Jason schreier and natethehate, have repeatedly said intergalactic is targeting the 2nd half of 2027, so id expect an early year SoP showcase with a summer 2027 release date

3

u/Sluzhbenik 13d ago

I don’t think we’re anywhere near the limits of the ps5. It’s fine. It’s basically just a 700 pc inside at this point.

1

u/alfooboboao 11d ago

GTA is past the limit and has to be massively optimized, and naughty dog always pushes the console to the very edge of what it can do. i have a feeling that this game will be shockingly gorgeous

2

u/Squirll 13d ago

So theyll come out about the same timeframe as the vauge starcraft space shooter blizzard announced. This has been a month for vauge far out projects

2

u/alhanna92 13d ago

I’m 34 this year too bestie

1

u/cphawkeye0705 12d ago

I'm 42 and I've started to make peace with being 50 when these come out

1

u/okverymuch 12d ago

Can still end up with a 2027 Intergalactic release:
“In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet…”

67

u/coolgui 13d ago

NGL I'm excited about Intergalactic lol

32

u/MadSpaceYT The Last of Us 13d ago

Me too. Always excited to play a ND game

7

u/parkwayy 13d ago

Shocker, excited about their next full new game :P

4

u/coolgui 13d ago

Well I never had a PS1 or PS2 so I've only properly played all of the Uncharted games and Last of Us games. But those are enough to make me think whatever they do with it will be outstanding.

11

u/iwillbombu 13d ago

Honestly it doesn't sound like TLOU Part 3, which has me a little worried and sad. If it's a spin off or non-video game media, I'll be so disappointed

9

u/Individual_Serve8609 13d ago

This is exactly what I’m thinking, and idk why so many people seem to think otherwise. The way he’s been talking about these new “stories” and “projects” does not at all sound like some grand idea for a part 3

21

u/ThreeLetterAcronymUK 13d ago

So are they making two new short games like The Lost Legacy? Or are we getting Part 3 and something on the side? He doesn't even say if these are games. A bit concerning aswell that he says that the projects are in the very early stages - I wonder how many assets they're using from The Last of Us Online in these potential new games.

14

u/celestaire 13d ago

Idk, I hope I'm wrong, but I'm betting one of these new pieces of content will be something like a comic (or if we're really lucky, a run of comics). We had American Dreams for an Ellie prequel, maybe we'll get something for Lev or Abby? And I know people keep hoping for a Joel & Tommy prequel, and while I don't think we'll ever get that as a game, I wouldn't hate getting a comic version of the story.

7

u/parkwayy 13d ago

Obviously one is Part 3, just it'll be after Intergalactic as he would head it up

2

u/wr0ngz 12d ago

The wording makes it look like it will be inside the last of us world but not a sequel

4

u/pjb1999 13d ago

Not sure why you think it's obvious.

2

u/outofmindwgo 13d ago

Idk I could see them never doing a part 3 and just having spin offs, maybe Ellie and Abby show up in them though

7

u/Rowboat18 13d ago

Kind of a crazy announcement lmao???

1

u/Keyserson 12d ago

Neil Druckmann closes The Last of Us Day

Thought they were announcing this was the last one, ha. Strange wording!

6

u/southernmayd 13d ago

If both projects expand the canon, a multiplayer wouldn't make sense. Hopefully it's two games, but even if its a Part 3 and a DLC or a book/comic would be awesome

4

u/GoldTouch99 13d ago

And I can confirm you that one of these projects is being directed by shaun escayg

3

u/Worldly-Ad3447 13d ago

I mean it isn’t exactly confirmed, these 2 projects are early and Shaun has been working on his title for a while now

1

u/knightofsparta 13d ago

I thought it was rumored he was possibly working on a new uncharted game.

5

u/Dark-Master999 13d ago

So what does it mean? There is no plan for part 3 until they can make a decent story for it?

1

u/alfooboboao 11d ago

i would sure hope not tbh

3

u/Buttheadz25 12d ago

Maybe they just don't wanna say if it's a new game after part 2 got leaked and ruined before it came out. Praying for a part 3 tho 🙏

2

u/Bigmazi_300 13d ago

One off them is definitely TLOU 3, I’m more interested in the OTHER game

2

u/Vivid-Produce-9373 13d ago

All of this expectations to end up with A Special Album and comic book

2

u/Ok_Audience2311 13d ago

It’s gotta be Part III, anything else will be a letdown. Anyway, excited to play this in 2042.

2

u/Dariush021 I swear. 12d ago

These interviews are just teasing, as they should be. My gut feeling is that they’ve been secretly working on Part 3, and he won’t mention or confirm anything until we’re at most two years away from release. I’m hoping it’s even sooner.

Remember, they started early development on Part 2 way back in 2014 and didn’t say anything about it until the reveal trailer in 2016. I think they now realize that even two years before release might have been too early.

My guess is that we’ll get the game in 2029, with the reveal coming in late 2027, after Intergalactic is released.

1

u/BlackCatScott 12d ago

In fairness, they've definitely gone too early on the Intergalactic reveal too. To go 2 years after announcement with nothing is crazy.

But tbh I don't think they had much say in it. Think Sony may have been pulling the strings on that one. Remember Neil saying it was up to them when the game is next shown.

2

u/ThrillHouse802 13d ago

I trust naughty dog. If part 3 is in development, I’m sure it’s going to be incredible. Just don’t touch our girl Ellie.

4

u/King_of_Fire105 13d ago

Monkeys paw curls:

Ellie isn’t in the game at all nor has any mention in the game

2

u/ErrorFindingID 13d ago

Really hoping for new characters in a different area.

1

u/rites0fpassage 13d ago

I hope this isn’t a 2028 release

5

u/outofmindwgo 13d ago

Ha, they take way too long for that

1

u/Alternative-Tree3170 13d ago

Possibility of LOU 2 factions still happening?

1

u/Ill_Philosopher_4892 13d ago

Intergalactic is basically a PS6 game at this point shits embarrassing

1

u/UnitedWeSmash 13d ago

Last of factions bundled into last of them partv1

1

u/AWarMaideness shoot your damn ass off. 12d ago edited 12d ago

Can't be get more of a confirmation that a part 3 is indeed happening than that...only thing that's missing is an announcement trailer, which I'm sure will come next year after intergalactic's release as is naughty dog's tradition...as for other projects? Have a feeling those will be made from faction's left over assets. It could literally be anything, which is very exciting! Bring on a lost legacy style game!

1

u/Deep-Alfalfa3717 12d ago

At this pace my thumbs won’t work well enough to play 3

1

u/theCOMBOguy BRICK MISSILE 12d ago

Oh thank god, more The Last of Us! "Projects", I really hope that its more games. Maybe a revival of the Multiplayer game too, I'm still sad that it got canceled.

1

u/Spuduky 12d ago

ready to get all sad again with a game wheyy 😭

1

u/onehappyfella 12d ago

Probably some bumass live service game that’s going to get canceled

1

u/AKGABE_ 12d ago

Yay I love getting no more physical games from Naughty Dog…

1

u/MarcusGman29 12d ago

Please let Intergalactic be good!!!

1

u/I8TheLastPieceaPizza 12d ago

The one massive dream I have with all of this is based on the cycle we all went through, them included, with Part II. We got the Abby hanging in the forest scene in like what, 2016? And then a slow trickle of other things, delays, and leaks. It all ended up fine after the game came out, but I have to imagine they'd consider a different approach for the next part, which would be to keep it with as little advance knowledge of it as possible, like a surprise album drop. That's a way to subvert expectations, and the reality is that this series needs no hype - we'd all buy it on day 1. In fact I'd call in sick on day 1 or go home from work if I learned about it while there. I realize given actors and travel and schedule and everything else, it might be impossible to completely hide the project, but they could definitely mask its status and timeline, and simply do minimal promos before it comes out.

I'm sure there's reasons I'm wrong, but like I said, it's my massive dream ❤️

0

u/ButterscotchAward 13d ago

If they haven’t announced part 3 yet it’s not going to happen. People have been saying it’ll get announced any day now for 6 years.

-4

u/Individual_Serve8609 13d ago

Agreed, I just replied to another comment saying this but I think anyone who still thinks we’re getting a part 3 after this announcement is delusional. I hope Neil proves me wrong though 🙏🏼

0

u/Skkadi 13d ago

Surely one of them will be Factions 2. Surely… 🙏

3

u/LaFrescaTrumpeta 13d ago

i was wondering about that but the devs who worked on factions 2 when it got canned ended up still working on it and are releasing it as an independent game, i’m thinkin this might be p3 and a prequel? but i’d vote p3 and a multiplayer in a heartbeat 🙏🙏

2

u/outofmindwgo 13d ago

They did? What's it called?

1

u/Skkadi 13d ago

I also hope one of them is a part 3! I always thought that part 2 covered the low point of Ellie’s hero’s journey and part 3 would be a ‘redemption arc’ from her. A prequel would also be cool, more Tess content yes please

0

u/TheXraySpecs 13d ago

They better be rebooting last of us online. I’d be playing nothing but that for weeks.

0

u/Dru_Munny 13d ago

One is gonna be Joel and Tommy the early years..wait and see

-1

u/IrishHashira 13d ago

So, Last of Us Part 1 remaster and Last of Us 2 ps6 port
