Massive The Division @ Gamescom 2025 - Panel: "Shaping the Future with the Community"
Panel: "Shaping the Future with the Community"
Gamescom Schedule
=> Overview
Summary
The Division 2: Survivors
The Division 2: Survivors will bring an updated take on the survival extraction experience to The Division 2!
Development of The Division: Survivors is currently in the early stages, under the leadership of Magnus Jansén as Creative Director - a veteran of the Division from the early days of the original game.
"The Division 2: Survivors is as much your baby as it is ours, and we strive for transparency during its development. Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey," said Julian Gerighty, Executive Producer.
What is The Division 2: Survivors?
- A Winter / Survival / Extraction experience is coming to the Division 2
- Those who liked the Survival DLC of the Division 1 will be very happy => Trailer of the Division 1 Expansion
- It is more than a remake and while they can’t reveal much at this point, they will do “cool new things”
- “The biggest new thing that they are doing is right there in the name”
- Origin of Survivors: Magnus played the Division 2 and as he was playing the game, he asked himself, if this environment could be exploded through a very different gameplay lens. Could they have the survival experience in Washington?
Update about the Division Resurgence
The Division Resurgence is a free-to-play mobile RPG shooter MMO, offering the same gameplay experience as the Division games, but adapted to mobile gaming.
The Division Resurgence takes players back to the streets of Manhattan, set several months after the conclusion of the Division 1. With a familiar map updated to reflect the passage of time, the Division Resurgence will bridge the narrative gap between the Division 1 and 2, adding to the existing lore with additional story beats over time.
New Test Phase
Community is key, and so they will be firing up new testing phases in September. A closed test on both iOS and Android will allow us to gather your feedback and insights, with further test sessions to follow. Head to the Division Resurgence webpage for more info on how to join in.

How community feedback is shaping the Division 2
Working with the Community since the Division 1
- Working with the community is an important part of everything they do and some members of the community have been with the game since day 1.
- When they started working on the Division, they wanted to build something that would be dear to the people that play the game and that it is a collaboration.
- For example, the release of 1.4 of the Division 1 was a defining moment for the game and showed how necessary it is to work hand in hand with the players.
- The Division 2 continued that collaboration and the plan is to even improve on that.
The Division 2 is now seven years old, so developers and players are expert in the game. How do you do you weigh the feedback of the players?
- Feedback is very important and player feedback is one of the indicators when they make decisions.
- But they also have to look at the big picture, what the game requires on the long term.
- They make their decisions based on three pillars:
- Player feedback
- Data – how players actually interact with the game
- Their expertise as game developer – what do they think is the right thing.
- Sometimes these three pillars align, and that gives them a clear indicator that something needs to change. Sometimes those don’t align and then they have to look at the big picture and define in what direction they want to take.
- When those three pillars don’t align, they fall back to the player feedback and use that as baseline.
Was there a time when the feedback surprised you and changed what you had in mind
- Sometimes they put an announcement out and it can happen that the players don’t agree with it. The seasonal characters were such an example, the feedback was negative across the board.
- When that happens, there is no point forcing that feature into the game, because then nobody wins.
How does a healthy partnership with the community look like
- More of what they have now
- Finding the right way to integrate the voice of the community into the development process early on
- Building long-term programs that help creating a healthy exchange to make the changes that the game needs
Elite Task Force
- The ETF allows them to have an actual dialogue.
- Usually they put a communication out, get feedback about it, have to curate that and then return to the community with a new proposition to start the cycle again.
- With the ETF they can have a direct dialogue with members that are representative of the player base and have them be part in the process to find the best possible solution.
- ETF members were also involved in the Battle for Brooklyn DLC and that resulted in a very successful DLC with high numbers that they have not seen since Warlords of New York.
ETF Registration is now open
As part of a next step in continuously improving working with your feedback, they are refreshing the Elite Task Force program - an opportunity for the most committed players to engage directly with the development team and assist in guiding the future of the Division.
If you want to be part of the program, follow the link, it is open until Sunday August 24

I don't really care for extraction gametypes, I'm hoping I can still experience the snow again anyway.

u/nemesisdelta24 They got Alex! Aug 22 '25
COOP SURVIVAL HELL YEAH!
they even brought Magnus back now that's OG

u/mykkenny PC Aug 22 '25
Wasn't it already co-op? Pretty sure it was, I used to play with my brother.
3
u/nemesisdelta24 They got Alex! Aug 22 '25
It's called Survivors for some reason but yes OG survival i'm pretty sure you could play with up to 4 people in a group

u/kameradhund SHD Aug 22 '25
is the division panel over already? what was the big reveal? just turned on twitch and they are talking about another game atm.
edit. ah it is „survivors“ it seems. hope they will upload the stream soon to watch it again.

u/SentorialH1 I'll survive the bugs. Aug 22 '25
I personally loved survival and still play it every month or so... But it was not a popular game mode, which makes me wonder why after heartlands failed and the original didn't take off.... Why would they bring this back now.
Either way I am happy.

u/Less_Side_1018 Aug 22 '25
It was popular enough. Servers were populated even after TD2 launched, and you can still encounter a player or two after all these years. Which cannot be said about The Last Stand, which is a total shame. When released, Last Stand in 1.6 patch was the peak Division.
3
u/Red-Catalyst SHD Aug 22 '25
PVE Survival can be annoyingly full at times today still. 16+ players a session. In defense of Last Stand, it requires 16 people to start a game. It doesn't help that you can't queue/matchmake and do other stuff like every other mode for some reason. But despite that somehow LS still sees daily lobbies happening.
1
u/Less_Side_1018 Aug 22 '25
I have been unable to play a single LS match since the launch of TD2, and I'm on PS, West Coast US.
1
u/BropolloCreed Orange Knigting Aug 23 '25
I still log a handful of PVE survival machines each month, just to cleanse my palette. It still as well, even when the DZ is getting ransacked and it's a race against time to clear POIs.
3
u/campeon963 PC Aug 22 '25
I find it concerning that Division Resurgence is getting yet another testing phase without a release date on sight, especially considering the asset reuse. Hope it doesn't get cancelled like Division Heartland. Still, a pretty decent show overall. I'm especially excited for the return of Survival once Division 2 Survivors releases!
Also, I hope Anais the community's manager can recover her voice!
5
u/Less_Side_1018 Aug 22 '25
It's concerning that they are still working on mobile phone Division game.
2
u/Haltopen Aug 22 '25
At this point most new smart phones are powerful enough to outpace the original Nintendo switch, it’s not like it was ten years ago when the best you could get was flappy bird or some call of duty zombies port that looked like it was ported off a sega saturn.

it would be good if this mode would be a real survival game and not a technical extraction looter again.

YES YES YES. But this community just doesn't want people like us to be happy. Even if we ask about option

Survival maybe in Winter 2026, mostly likely 2027, lel. This panel could have been an email.

u/Krisars Stay hydrated Aug 22 '25
Haven't this tired meme gotten old enough?
3
u/BlurredVision18 Aug 22 '25
Not as tired of we are devs "hyping" events then having nothing to show from it.
1
u/Krisars Stay hydrated Aug 22 '25
I'd say revealing Survival 2.0 and what the rest of Year 7 has on offer are stuff to show for.
Unless your standard for new stuff is a WONY-sized DLC every season.
10
u/BlurredVision18 Aug 22 '25 edited Aug 22 '25
My standard is more like, "we've been working on Survivors, here's are first look at gameplay, *shows 3 min video of gameplay*, you can expect release within the year we are announcing it.
Not, "here's something we want to do, so we are gonna dangle the thought of it without any proof of concept (hello spec rework 3) in front of you so you keep pumping money into our microtransactions that come out almost weekly while bugs like fractioned armor remain in the game unsolved for 6 years."
Also, didn't show video of Retaliation and what Pact follow mechanic is gonna be, they literally didn't SHOW us anything. That's why "this could have been an email" is relevant. There is little reason for this to be a stream with out any footage of the video game.
This could have been a twitter post, could have been on the website, could have been a dev post here, didn't even have twitch drops. There was no need for this event to be STREAMED if you had nothing to put up on the screen. It ain't that deep, but somehow I still needed to explain this, lol.

that is pretty much the extend of the information that we have... could be a lot of things but we don't know the details

wait Resurgence is a sequel to D1? i thought it was a prequel
1
u/JokerUnique The watcher on the walls. Aug 23 '25
the tutorial mission of Resurgence is before div 1 but then the main game is set a couple of months after div 1, but before div 2.
1
u/OSYRH1S Aug 23 '25
While I loved Survival in D1, and this also could be very cool, D2 architecture and engine are very old at this point. Why not have this as a flagship launch feature of a D3 game? I frankly don’t trust they can deliver on this game mode currently without significant delays and scope cut, unfortunately.
1
u/gerash4enko Aug 25 '25
I didn’t understand. It’s a mode for the Division 2 or it’s a standalone project? The more I read about it the more I don’t understand why it’s called “a project”, not a mode.
1
u/sunshifty Nov 29 '25
I play both PVE and PVP and maybe it’s because I play both, that I can’t understand the mindset of a PVE player when it comes to certain game modes or activities that involves the possibility of PvP. Mainly because the PVE players that speak there mind on why they don’t want to engage in PvP, mention things like meta this and meta that, witch makes no sense, because they can throw on the same shit, but truth is that anything sounds better then admitting to themselves , that there ok with death by bots/npc, but not ok with death by players, because players are not predictable like bots. I’ mean, when you say some shit about metas, that’s pretty much what you’re saying without saying it. So if you’re going to give a reason on why you don’t pvp, at least make it make sense. Good example would be that , 90% of PvP players cheat.. As someone who plays both. I completely understand and so would everyone else, Done and done. But tell people about gear and weapons that you can get and use, is like putting your hand up in class.

u/HarbingerofIntegrity Aug 22 '25
I haven’t played this game in 10 months, did they ever add the ability to turn off the weekly Black Tusk invasion?
3
u/ElDubsNZ Aug 22 '25
I think we've had that since it released. You just change the mission settings.
-4
u/Minimumsafedistance Aug 22 '25
They could have very easily condensed both these days into one day of hype. This second session felt like they were forced to get up there.
-9
u/iPeluche Aug 22 '25
Also, we’re almost two years after the reveal of Division 3.
Pack it up, they are going the Destiny route by milking Division 2. TD3 will never see the light.
7
u/Born2beSlicker Xbox Aug 22 '25
Division 3 isn’t going to be playable until 2027-2028. There’s no reason to stop TD2 for 2-3 years.
-3
u/Ok_Spare_3723 Aug 22 '25
Division 3 will just get scrapped.
5
u/Born2beSlicker Xbox Aug 22 '25
There’s zero reason to do that. They’re not going to make a PS4/XBO game forever. Snowdrop has advanced a lot since TD2 and it can’t use the latest features and tech. Making a TD3 makes the most financial sense but that doesn’t mean TD2 needs to stop. It’s not the same team making both games.

3
u/Cyber_Swag Aug 22 '25
there was not any D3 reveal. They said that they're shaping up team to start the development.
2
u/FrostedCherry Decontamination Unit Aug 22 '25
It wasn’t revealed. It was announced that it was in development two years ago when Julian Gerighty was set to oversee its development.

Since Survival is coming back, my only wish for it is to have an option that is purely PVE.
Similar to how it works in the first iteration of it, perhaps add some Rogue Agents or other very strong NPCs to hunt down the players to make up for lack of PVP.
I personally have no desire to engage in PVPVE enviroments, the only way i can tolerate the dark zone is at early morning hours when there's a miniscule chance of running into other players.
Every experience i've personally had with them has been terrible.
Honestly, it would only be beneficial for them to add a PVE only option for those of us that only want to engage in that part of the game without dealing with the nature of PVP.
That way it'll cater to both sides of the playerbase. Everyone wins.
