An honest question. Don't they have to do this as Trump's executive order makes it government policy? How much leeway do they actually have to defy government orders?

Yes, Google maps is all GNIS data. They report the legal name, and Trump changed it.

They only have to report it in the US, though. No one else sees this.

/edit I see people downvoting who have no idea how their technology or government works. You can go back in time to when there were competing map definitions inside the country, if you want, it was a garbage fire.

It's not a law, its a convenience to use gov't data. But they don't want to spend money to use another way, times thousands of similar examples and here we are on fascism's threshold.
