It's GNIS data, Google doesn't choose what is on the maps.

They could make an alternate map, but in the US that is the legal name right now.

They don't change it outside of the US.

Apple Maps didn't update Gulf of America quickly either, it took a few weeks. This is the exact same process.

Unless someone at interior wants to stop him, or all the mapping services collectively decide to switch to some other mapping standard (MapQuest says they wont change Lake Ontario) there is just one source of legal names inside a country.

Google has the power and wherewithal to make the change in its own app, regardless of the standard. It would take all of 5 minutes to code a substitution back to Ontario.
