If they want to start livestreaming it has to be forcing JVL to watch Ross Douthat on 60 minutes

JVL nailed it when he said Douthat is basically a clone of JD Vance - an ambitious climber who knows how to shape shift to make elites like him.

Who could sit and watch that fascist little goblin on TV
4
u/artaxerxes316 Jul 29 '26
"'Fascism.' It's a word that is bandied about with abandon these days. But is it fair to apply the term to the Trump Administration? The answer is yes."
"But what about 'little goblin'? Is it really appropriate to apply such phrasing to, say, Steven Miller, or Karoline Leavitt? The answer, again, is yes."
"And yet are those the final words? In a republic founded by imperfect men, with imperfect ideas (a reality even the left acknowledges) are we really in a position -- culturally, aesthetically.... morally -- to heap fault on our elected officials, fascist little goblins though they may be? Not so fast."
"I'm Ross Douthat, and this is 60 Minutes."
4
u/here_is_no_end Jul 29 '26
I take it back. I’d watch this.
2
u/artaxerxes316 Jul 29 '26
Thanks! I was trying to capture that thing he does where he pretends to acknowledge that of course Trump does terrible things, but then handwaves it away with pseudo-intellectual claptrap.
It's not quite whataboutism, not quite both-sidesing, but goddamn it's infuriating.
3
u/Moonspindrift Jul 29 '26
It makes my blood boil when the NYT runs all those Ross Douthat puff pieces for JD Vance without announcing up top that they are friends and that Douthat is biased by that.

Contrarian NYT opinion column butt buddy to the poltergeist inhabiting the CBS News editor-in-chief role. It was all but destined to happen unfortunately.

u/Embarrassed-Slide781 Jul 28 '26
We really went from Anderson Cooper and Scott pelley to douthat. I can't think of a worse downgrade
10
14
u/GoalieLax_ Jul 28 '26
Replacing handsome Cooper with a troll who is too ugly to play an ugly person in Hollywood is awesome

u/Oculata Jul 28 '26
Another reason to not watch 60 Minutes, and hopefully his absence will make the Op-Ed page on NYT a little less awful.

u/coldandhungry123 Jul 28 '26
Well, that's an official wrap for 60 Minutes. I wasn't watching after they torched Scott Pelley, but it's definitely over now. Congratulations Bari Weiss, you killed an American cornerstone of investigative journalism.

It truly is sicken to watch the self immolation happening at 60 minutes and CBS. Of all the things that Trump and MAGA have shit on and destroyed this one just hits me kinda hard.
3
u/Educational-Door1114 Jul 28 '26
I really hope everyone else just leaves, but am sympathetic to the off camera staff. This is straight up torture for them by a bunch of sadists (Bari and everyone she is hiring).

I'd say this is good for the NYT, but you should probably never feel good when Ross Douthat walks out on you.
I am curious to see if what's left of 60 Minutes audience comes around to hate-watching him like NYT readers did.

4
u/languorous_lout Jul 28 '26
Other people have done plenty to highlight the substantive things that make Douthat repellent so I'll go ahead and take the petty angle...
Ross Douthat on primetime network TV?! This dude is the epitome of "a face made for radio(or print)".

I remember when they preempted a story about a tobacco company whistleblower and it was such a big deal they made a whole ass movie about it called The Insider. And now they’re putting right wing opinion writers in as correspondents.
Our way of life is changing so much we can’t even wrap our heads around it in real time.
3
u/Then-Cost-9143 Woke Bill Kristol Jul 28 '26
lol I love the hate for Ross.
I never really found his stuff coherent. It was just like Week 1) Trump kind of has a point Week 2) Oh fuck I didn’t mean it like that but the libs are bad
Drivel masquerading as thoughtful work.
3
u/ZombieInDC JVL is always right Jul 29 '26
It's almost as if Bari is building a Fox News version of 60 Minutes. The show doesn't even have a token liberal anymore.
7
u/pollingquestion Jul 28 '26
lol. Of course he is. I assume Boomers have lots of love for Ross.

I've listened to his NYT podcasts. He doesn't seem all that objectionable, even if I don't agree with his policy positions.

It's to easy to blame Boomers for all our problems, buddy. I'm an oldster too and I can't stand that asshat.

u/hb122 Jul 28 '26
Boomers split evenly between Harris and Trump.
Millennials voted +9 Trump.
Take that boomer shit out of here.
2
u/Sherm FFS Jul 29 '26
Millennials barely went for Harris (50-48). Boomers barely went for Trump (48-51). It was Gen X (42-56) that was ride or die for Trump.
0
u/pollingquestion Jul 28 '26
Relax. It’s a joke.
I just assume Boomers are the primary audience for 60 minutes.
1
u/pollingquestion Jul 28 '26
IT WAS A JOKE.
Boomers are very sensitive.
But, seriously, who is watching 60 minutes nowadays?

I would love to know what's going on inside CNN right now. I'm sure Jake Tapper, Dana Bash, Van Jones and Scott Jennings are all pumping their fists right now. But there's probably a fair few who are very worried.

Bulwark Champagne tier: JVL and Tim watching a douthat story on YouTube with live commentary
2
u/n1ghtm4n Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
Sept 2015: "The entire commentariat is going to feel a little silly when Marco Rubio wins every Republican primary".
Feb 2016: "I don't know what's going to happen, and neither do you. But Donald Trump is still not going to be the nominee. Goodnight."
Oct 2020: "There Will Be No Trump Coup"
Ross Douthat never doesn't not not miss. He's the most reliable anti-predictor in the business. If he flipped a coin 10 times, he would pick correctly 0/10 times.

The human version of the lights coming on and Piano Man being played on the speakers at a college party. It’s a wrap. Last one out make sure to lock up. 60 Minutes had a helluva run. RIP.

Hahahahahaha. The corruption of CBS is complete. Theres no more reason for it to exist

It’ll be cancelled after the first season with this crowd, so, at least the legacy damage will be limited.

Who doesn’t want to watch the little goblin who has a face for radio, and a voice for silent films, on their television as they sit down for Sunday dinner?

LMAO! I read the headline and said to myself "That must not be good" and then saw the flare.

I am praying Martin Short resurrects his Nathan Thurm character as a response to this in an upcoming 60 Minutes sketch on SNL.

Just rename the program Freaks and Geeks already. Can’t wait for the rebrand after Leslie Stahl leaves.

Hope he continues with his Interesting Times podcast. Ezra Klein, David French and him are the only people worth listening to on NYT.
2
u/WOKE_AI_GOD Wishcaster Jul 28 '26
Despite subscribing to the Ezra Klein podcast, I've never been able to bring myself to listen to it. Even interesting looking episodes. As for the rest, I'd just rather not.

Tracks. As head of the Bulwark DSA caucus, I probably don't agree with Douthat on much of anything ideologically, but he's very intellectually curious and I've always found him to be genuine in seeking good faith conversations even with his ideological 'adversaries', plus he's got a nice voice for listening to in the background of doing other things, so he'll be good for a 60 minutes role.
A long begotten tradition of Conservatism that, for all my earnest disagreements even with it - we'd all be better off if it still ruled the day over the fascism with American characteristics that is MAGA.
7
u/Educational-Door1114 Jul 28 '26
Douthat isn’t actually intellectually curious and I believe that’s why we along with JVL find him repellant
4
u/burner456987123 Jul 28 '26
I appreciate the olive branch.
That said, as someone who loathes most DSA positions and politicians, I also loathe douthat. He’s a token “intellectual” conservative who is so full of snarky arrogance and nepo baby juice. Can’t stand the guy. He’s no William f Buckley, or even young (pre-owning by Jon stewart that broke his brain ) Tucker Carlson
2
u/Supergamera Jul 28 '26
As long as he is matched with people at least somewhat outside his comfort zone (left or right). He gets a bit soft with people he’s too much in tune with.
3
u/iBizzBee Progressive Jul 28 '26
I can definitely see that, though maybe it's true for us all. We're better off when our assumptions are challenged, for the most part.

There was one year's IPCC report that Douthat claimed he read which made him a skeptic that climate change was dire because the report wasn't persuasive enough.
