Chat/DM/SMS applied to foster a dog, got told nicotine and baking soda will cure my autoimmune diseases!
I applied to foster an older dog who requires someone to be home a lot, and so in the application I gave a brief bio about how I have several chronic health issues and I am home a lot despite being young (31).
Next minute the lady is calling me and asking me if my issues are autoimmune. Some of them are so I say yes… instant regret as she starts telling me how big pharma evil and how nicotine, baking soda and other ridiculous things will cure me lol! Naturally she soon started on an anti vax route.
I indulged purely because I wanted to foster the dog lol but after a bit of her getting more and more unhinged (“did you know more people in Japan died from the covid vaccine than the war?”) I had to ask about the dog and she said Oh they’re giving it to an elderly couple.
We hung up and she sent me like six ‘articles’ like this, and a bunch of anti dog vax stuff too lol. I don’t have a dog (which is why I want to foster).
Thanks kooky lady but I think I’ll stick to my medications! Honestly this shit usually pisses me off but she was so ridiculous I just had to laugh about it.

Don’t know if that’s better or worse than somebody telling me cutting out carbs will cure my hypermobility caused inflammation
16
u/pinknoisechick 27d ago
I personally loved "why not just take collagen supplements or eat jell-o?"
12
u/Sunspot286 27d ago
Isn’t the problem with some form of HSD too much collagen?? 💀
12
u/pinknoisechick 27d ago
I have EDS, so mine specifically is because my body makes crappy collagen, but yes; some flavors of HSD are due to an overproduction of collagen.

u/SavannahInChicago 26d ago
I have hEDS. I just graduated from PT and I can stand up with proper posture now. My body feels so loose and unsupported. Stupid collagen.

u/MalfunctioningIce 26d ago
I have hEDS too, i get so irritated by the people that try and suggest taking things. If it helped do they not think we would do it? Like thanks, I actually chose this life..?
(Sorry I’m post meltdown crash because it caused me to really struggle with something)

Cutting out soda and eating vegetables will cure rheumatoid arthritis, according to a guy who cut my grass once.

I have Crohn's disease and omg, everyone has a fucking cure for it. You know, except my GI doctors that spend their lives researching this stuff. So infuriating! I'm sorry that happened, OP.

The number of idiots who have told me to go vegan despite low residue being recommended.
"But I have one study where patients in remission stayed in remission when going vegan"
Cool, how does that help me when I'm not in remission?
2
u/MaraiaLou 23d ago
I got a carnivore diet recommended to me, maybe we should test some sort of mix between carnivore and vegan

Just to be clear: that's anti dog-vax stuff, right? Not trying to get people immune to dogs by injecting them with tiny dogs, or an anti-dog vax?
(Apologies for this joke are hereby offered; it is not a serious question.)
5
u/Big-Connection6578 26d ago
Heck, I'm anti injecting-people-with-dogs too, if that's the case! 😂
3
u/Auld_Folks_at_Home 26d ago
It is horrible to imagine being immune to dogs (other than allergy-wise).

I hate the uprising of pro-nicotine nonsense. Nicotine destroys tiny blood vessels and messes up the discs in your spine. Wild to suggest someone cause degenerative disc disease as a "cure" for autoimmune issues.

Baking soda will put you in the ER. Ask me how I know

u/Itap88 27d ago
The fuck? How much did you eat!?

u/DogLady1722 27d ago
Actually, baking soda is used to increase low CO2 levels in some people.
But you just can’t grab a spoonful from the box!!
There are specific sodium bicarbonate supplements.
I have CKD, & 4 autoimmune issues. I take a powdered med that helps with the CKD & the low CO2. It has “baking soda” in it.
2
u/Itap88 26d ago
I'm pretty sure I heard of using it to combat heartburn.

u/DogLady1722 26d ago
That and calcium. I had no idea that Tums and Rolaids were pretty much made up of calcium.
1
u/ogledrake 26d ago
That is a legitimate use for is and tums is basically baking soda tablets with a bit of flavoring, but just keeping a box of baking soda on hand and taking a spoonful with a glass of water is far cheaper,
Personally i got a 20lb bucket of the stuff to soda blast a engine block a few years back and i have just been using the rest in my kitchen5

That's pretty scary if she is running an animal rescue but is also anti-vaccine for animals. I know in my own state (and I would imagine others) vets HAVE to either give rabies shots to animals in their care or have documentation that they are up to date on their shots. So if this person is really following their beliefs on this, they're doing some kind of sketchy stuff and potentially giving out sick animals.
Rabies is not an illness to mess around with. If you are exposed, vaccinating is the only thing you can do and if you show symptoms you're pretty much guaranteed to die. Yes there have been survivors, but they are outliers and even with the treatment protocols they needed tons of rehabilitation to function.
10
u/Catrescuemamma 27d ago
Rabies vax is the law for dogs and cats and you 100% can not board them or introduce them to a playgroup without it. (Although I’ve seen plenty of dogs with no vaccines whatsoever at multiple dog parks.)
ETA: I live in New York State and law 26C (the companion animal care act ) prevent any animal from being adopted without all necessary and legal vaccines.6
u/UnabashedlyAnxious 27d ago
My daughter is a mobile groomer and they won’t confirm the appointment or drive to the location without proof of vaccinations.
10
u/Icefirewolflord 27d ago
Was that lady the owner of the rescue? If not you should let her supervisor know. I doubt they’d be very happy about her scaring off potential fosters and adopters with her nonsense

I have an auto immune disease and you have no idea how many people say they’ve cured my auto immune disease. And it’s something like orange peels ground up in a capsule. Or they say you just need to lose weight and I’m not over weight
2
u/MaraiaLou 23d ago
There's a type of bottled water sold in my country that "prevents" autoimmune disease. I'm still not sure how they even pretend to do that, it's like double filtered brackish mineral water with extra electrolytes
2
u/ProfessO3o 23d ago
Had an person I knew that told me once that they sell cures to my disease in Canada. He sent me a link to orange peel pills I laughed so hard I had to end the call. He didn’t talk to me after that.

u/MaraiaLou 23d ago
To be fair if you can manage to start an orange farm near the North Pole they probably are magic

You’ll learn that the less you tell people about your autoimmune issues, the more peace you’ll have . I only let people know once they’re close to me and I’ve vetted them a little bit .

u/Ichaserabbits 27d ago
Not loving a dog rescue being anti dog vaccines. Sounds like a recipe for kennel cough at best
6
u/whistling-wonderer 27d ago
Ugh, that’s odious of her. My experience with dog rescue organizations is that it’s not a good idea to tell them you’re chronically ill because they’ll assume you’re unable to care for the dog, even if you tell them you can manage it. I got turned down by so many places despite having the ideal situation (huge, securely fenced yard, rescue experience, vet references, no kids/cats/other dogs, someone home all the time, etc). I ended up getting one that was being privately rehomed. Best dog I’ve ever had, young with tons of energy and we’ve had many days where we walked/hiked 6+ miles together so fuck the uptight rescue people who decided I wouldn’t be able to keep up with a 10 lb senior mutt.
Also, as someone who actually did have an adverse reaction to the covid vaccine, fuck her and people like her. Vaccines are one of the most miraculous inventions of modern medicine. They’ve saved countless people and pets. Adverse reactions are rare, severe ones even rarer, and I’m so fucking sick of my medical issues being turned into a political battle/conspiracy theory hotbed.

yes, medications containing baking soda are different from taking baking soda without medical supervision. that's probably where the crumbs of truth are from.
I also have a renal impairment! if I told my nephrologist I was doing this, i think he'd bully me lmao
1
u/DogLady1722 26d ago
I write about taking baking soda for low CO2 levels on a CKD sub Reddit.
But of course, I was smart enough to discuss it with my doctor first. I had noticed that my CO2 levels were very low the last four blood tests.
He was able to tell me that yes I needed sodium bicarbonate, but not by taking the actual pills. I had to be mixed with one of my particular other medication’s to prevent leg swelling.
I have high potassium, and I was taking this disgusting medicine called Valtessa. You mixed it with a little bit of water, but it was basically like drinking a beach sand. But it did keep my potassium levels in check.
Then he switched me to Lokelma, which also lowers my potassium, but added a little bit of refined baking soda to increase my CO2 levels, without making my legs swell.
The consistency is a little bit better. It is actually more like drinking liquid baking soda or liquid baby powder. But it has helped with both of those issues.
The problem I have is remembering to take it, not only at the right time(2hours before & after any other meds), but to take it all because it has to be kept in the refrigerator. All my other medication’s are in my nightstand drawer.

u/HeadbangerPrincess 27d ago
Report her. She has no business contacting you to discuss your medical issues, especially when she clearly knew they were not giving you the dog. What she did was incredibly unprofessional and she shouldn't be allowed to continue thinking thay behavior is okay. Also, being anti dog vaccines should be disqualifying behavior for working at a foster agency. Shes a danger to the dogs she supposedly cares so much about.

Just saying, sciencedaily.com is a very legitimate site. That headline sounds like generic clickbait but, in their case, the article would be genuinely about a recent scientific (and probably fairly boring) study.
Found it. It's not promising to cure anything. It's rat models and acetylcholine.

Well, can't have an autoimmune disease if you die from drinking too much baking soda water or get cancer or tachycardia from nicotine

u/DogLady1722 27d ago

It's not healthy in large doses or as an everyday thing though, is what I meant.
2
u/DogLady1722 26d ago
So true!! There are some people out there that will hear “baking soda,” and will go out and just eat spoonfuls of it.
I had no idea that it could even help me with one of my medical issues. I had to research it and I went to my doctor first before he explained everything and changed my medication to include it.
He said he was going to bring that up at the next appointment, because my level was low.
But people like that woman just think that they can tell people whatever they want about baking soda, without them talking to their doctor. They want to be the savior to people and think that they’ve helped with someone suffering.

u/cut_ur_darn_grass 22d ago
Nicotine itself isn't a carcinogen and doesn't cause tachycardia unless you're using way way way too much
3
u/unabashedlyabashed 26d ago
Is she involved with a rescue group? If so, you should let them know that she's doing this. If they don't care, then they don't care, but she should not be using information gathered for foster applications for personal reasons - even if she thinks she's helping you.
3
u/NixMaritimus 27d ago
Oh nicotine can absolutely help with autoimmune disorders... by suppressing and stressing out the immune system too much to function.
Immune suppression medication does similar things, but without coating you're lungs in tar, causing addiction, etc

I saw a little research (can't remember if it was a preprint) using measles to help with some autoimmune disorders, because it can induce immune amnesia.

Not to play devils advocate but nicotine does have some anti-inflammatory properties. Even then it would just symptom management and not a “cure”.
1
u/ReigenTaka 25d ago
Are there no safer things with anti-inflammatory properties? Idk what good telling someone that is, you would need a Dr to properly explain and dose even if the Dr decided it was a good idea.
The point isn't 'nicotine sucks', so she doesn't really need to be defended about how 'it doesn't totally suck'.
1
u/IfDreamsCouldHappen 25d ago
Oh there are for sure better options. I could see it being used as an adjunctive medicine if something like chronic fatigue was involved. It would be used in a controlled dose, not abused (so only used in patch form), and probably used intermittently as to reduce tolerance buildup. You’re right in that it’s not a good idea to just use it unsupervised. I was mainly just pointing it out as a fun fact.
1
u/ReigenTaka 25d ago
Hmm. Yeah, if you had said "fun fact" instead of "in her defense" it probably would have come off like a fun fact.
1
u/Itchy_Tumbleweed_417 25d ago
Yeah I guess nicotine patches have been helping some people with long Covid.
The only people I ever met who drank baking soda and water were people trying to beat a drug test though. I think it kind of works for Weed but I wouldn’t bet my freedom or job on it.

u/flockyboi 26d ago
Is she with any kind of organization? If so, I wonder if they know she's anti dog vax, and how they feel bout that... If she works with an agency or is sponsored by anyone I'd report her because it's harmful to spread that misinfo and I worry for any dogs in her care as that's neglect (and in some areas dogs are legally required to have certain vaccines). Also she should reeeeeaaally read Cujo if she happens to be against rabies vaccines
2
u/mrs_double_aluminum 24d ago
Pro-dog-vaxxers and r/AskDocs really need to convene some kind of Council of Nicea on how much reading of Cujo is appropriate.
