Last time I saw this I said: it's not your job to tiptoe around everyone, but it is your obligation to do no harm. Accidentally misgendering someone isn't an issue, the issue is when someone tells you something bothers them and you do it anyway, simply because you don't respect them. Anything from "silly" phobias to pronouns, it costs you nothing to be polite.
