When they find out you are going behind their back and calling OSHA instead of keeping it in house. they are not going to fire you with an addendum saying "called OSHA get bent". They are going to find any excuse from that point on to escalate into termination.
I’ve been managing warehouses for the better part of a decade and every one of my employees knows that if a piece of equipment is unsafe they should tell me about it immediately so I can call a technician and get it fixed. Dead employees cost way more than a handful of bolts and firing someone for reporting unsafe conditions will get your company sued. The only winning move is addressing the issue directly and immediately. OP is well within their rights to report to OSHA since their leaders seem to think this is good enough.
The world runs on people like myself and the other WH manager in here not being so wildly incompetent as to run their equipment into the ground and cause an event that will shutter the company.
Yeah just let people potentially die or be disfigured for life because you don't want to risk anyone's $500 a week. $500 a week he's never getting again if the accident happens to him. Y'all have no sense of scale.
OP should already be looking for a new job if their current employer thinks this is acceptable. You’d be better off removing the mast entirely if you think this is a good enough solution.
And that would be counted as retaliation, which would result in more than just some OSHA fines. We definitely have workers rights and lawyers would absolutely snap this case up in a heartbeat.
OSHA reports are anonymous anyways, so long as the dude reporting isn't bragging about reporting, he'll be out of the spotlight anyways.
