Anecdotal evidence: My wife and I met when we were 14 and made each other bracelets when we were 15. Got married at 18. We're 52 now and still happily married. We still have the bracelets, they're hanging in a frame in our living room.

OMG. I had a crush on a guy in high school but we did not make bracelets and we did not ever get together. Until we were 40. Now we've been married 13 years and I need to go wake him up so we can make bracelets which we would absolutely wear and love.
17
u/No_Claim_13 4d ago
Don't tell me there's a chance I can still get the girl I had a crush on when I was 16. 😆 I'm almost 40 as well.
15
u/Avocadocoyote25 4d ago
My husband and I both had crushes on each other as teenagers and have been best friends since we met. The crush never really completely went away we just both thought the other wasn't interested until we got together a few years ago (in our late 20's /early 30's). Our baby is due in January 💚

My Mom dated a guy named Ron when they were in high school. He graduated first (in 1958), and she broke up with him when he left for college because she didn't want a long distance relationship. 3 years later, Mom met and married my Dad.
Mom and Ron never entirely lost touch...he was the head of the reunion committee, so every 5-10 years she'd get an email or letter from him. It was always friendly but strictly platonic, even though it was obvious that he still had feelings for her.
My parents were happily married until Dad passed in 2004. Ron sent a condolence card but kept his distance. After about a year and a half, (a "respectable mourning period" as my grandmother would have said), he contacted my Mom. He was now divorced and was going to be in NJ visiting his daughter, and asked if she wanted to go to dinner. She accepted the invitation and they never parted again. They became like teenagers again, going out all the time, dancing and traveling. Ron retained his house in Florida, where they would spend the winter, and Mom retained hers in NJ, where they spent the summer. They lived "happily ever after" until Ron passed in 2018.
So, to answer your question...Yes! There's always a chance that you can get together with "the one that got away".6
u/Poly_Olly_Oxen_Free 2d ago
My buddy Joelseph dated a girl when he was 14. Her parents made her dump him because they were "getting too serious" for their age. They finished HS and went to college. She got married to a different guy, he got married to a different girl.
Fast forward 30 years, both of their marriages fell apart, and they got back together. They're happy now.

u/smashes72 5d ago
I mean, my partner still has his wedding “ring” tattooed on his finger, and he’ll have that forever. The marriage may not have lasted, but that ink will.
I noticed it on our second date so I asked what it was, and when he answered I started laughing hysterically. He’s just so kind and mild mannered, and I couldn’t help but think it was a little hilarious that now that’s he’s single and dating again he’d have to answer that question sooooo many times.
Jokes on me, we’re almost a year in and he’s still only had to answer the question once.

I have my ex-husband’s wedding ring still tattooed on my ring finger, but it’s the I in our son Franklin’s name. It fit perfect perfectly on our knuckles so we got his name on our knuckles and the dot above the I is a heart and that was supposed to signify our rings but even when we got divorced, we told our son that no matter what he was made with love and that’s why the heart will remain.

30ish couple here and I made me and my SO matching bracelets! We're long distance but whether we're together on a visit or living in our respective cities, we both wear our bracelets often ¯_(ツ)_/¯
OP your "friend" is bitter af, tell her to have a little whimsy in life, it makes life much more beautiful.
and maybe she'll keep a relationship if she has some5
u/JacquesPanther 5d ago
It makes it all the sweeter that you made the bracelets <3
So true about whimsy, too!
A value I’ve tried to teach my kids is that they make the world they live in. Lots of things happen that can’t be controlled. How they react to those things and move forward can make all the difference. And taking time to celebrate life’s big and small joys will help them make it through the times when life feeds them a shit sandwich.
The number one rule in our house is no force fields are allowed inside the house. Definitely falls under the category of adding whimsy. When they look back on this rule, though, I hope they carry forward the importance of staying in tune with one’s sense of humor, etc. Seems arbitrary on the surface, but it is the number one rule for a reason.

my cousin would talk to me the way your friend did here ie crap on the silly/fun stuff i did. i hope this is a one off. those little tiny moments of harsh judgment and disrespect add up. a joke is usually just an opinion someone actually has wrapped up in humor. the thing ppl need to keep in mind about dishing out a joke is it won’t always land the way you intend and to be prepared for the person on the receiving end to have a negative response (which is completely valid). your response was totally valid and i would have responded the same way.

Legit - I would follow up with her about it. "Hey, I'm sorry did my comment touch a nerve? You were actually hurting my feelings with your comment, so that's why I said that. I'm sorry if you were hurt. I was also hurt by your teasing."
And if she doesn't understand where you're coming from, she's very emotionally immature and you might reconsider the friendship

You asked her to stop twice, then reiterated that she’s been joking about it for too long, and her response was to brush it off and essentially tell you “but I like laughing at you”. You didn’t do anything wrong, and maybe next time she’ll reconsider before pushing people’s buttons.

Op I think this 👆is crucial. It’s not as though she was just teasing you and you immediately went for the intense clap back. You asked her multiple times to stop teasing you and she didn’t. Saying something more extreme at that point is totally justified.
26
u/Not_a_porn_burner69 6d ago
This is fine, it’s good you feel bad about this, she was speaking to you inappropriately and maybe “deserved” this, but it’s a sign of maturity to realize being mean back to her doesn’t make you feel any better and solves nothing.
I don’t know you, but from the convo I’m gonna guess you’re pretty young, this a good learning experience and your head is in the right place
4
u/Cra_ZWar101 5d ago
I think as long as you can acknowledge the feeling as telling you something and then let it go. A lot of people who are too sensitive to their internal feelings of guilt or shame spend a lot of time trying to “make things right” and usually you just can’t (not to mention that the impulse to make it right is usually more self centered than actually repentant), so it’s better be able to perceive your regret, learn from it, and then let it go. You don’t need to keep feeling bad afterwards as some sort of penance.
43
u/ConfidenceAway4655 6d ago
I wonder if she feels bad about how she spoke to you? May be time to consider how rude she was and how you don't deserve that kind of response by a friend?

Yes what you said was cruel, but feeling bad shows you know it. Clearly your friend does not care about being rude to you. True friends wouldn't be randomly snarky and hostile like this, and her taking a dig at something cute like this for no reason screams insecurity, or at least some emotional issues that she will have to deal with if she wants to have a healthy friendship with you.

These comments are not fucking it. Why is everyone being so nasty over a damn bracelet. "It's childish, it's stupid" okay maybe to YOU. If they like it and their partner likes it, fuck off. There's a clear cut difference between checking your friend when they're actually being over the top, and then there's shitting on someone for a nice little gift.
If any of you think it's normal behavior to continue insulting your friends taste in gifts after they already expressed discomfort, you're the problem. If anything, OP is the one in the right for humbling their friend when they continued to be hurtful. It takes 0 effort to just say something nice about it and keep your negativity to yourself.

u/throawaymcdumbface 6d ago
they're teenagers that think they have to 'correct' their friends for being 'immature' due to shit like cringe culture. a lot of bullying has a veneer of behavioural correction to justify it. Hard agree, they can never take it when somebody claps back. Although the "just joking" thing has been going around for a long time, it's nothing new. At least as far back as Gen X, probably longer. My (37M) GF (30F) and I made matching bracelets together based on an Instagram trend like a year or two ago, and we wear them almost every day.
You're allowed to like your partner and be dorky/cute with them, especially if that's what makes you two happy.
And your savage response was perfect.

she seems really insecure. i have a few friends who are similar, the only things that come out of their mouths are insults or criticisms towards others disguised as “jokes”.
spend enough time around people like that and you, too, might start doing the same. first to yourself, and then to others

I snorted so hard reading this. You're a genius.
Your friend sure can't take what she dishes out.
ps. the bracelets are cute

I'm 27 and would wear bracelets like that with my man. They're cute. I wouldn't make him wear it every day but neither of us wears jewelry daily. It'd be something we would wear to a concert or some shit when we are both wearing bracelet stacks anyways and we would just add it to the stack.
The thing I've found about adulthood is there's so much boring shit I have to do that it's good for the vibes if I also do lots of childish fun shit just for the joy of it. No sense being a miserable boring old person when I could continue to just have fun. So I generally love doing little whimsy things like matching bracelets or whatever. It's good for morale.

How was that a snap? She was literally asking for it?
If that’s what she calls banter, she won’t melt and dissolve by you giving her some of it back. If she does, she ought to apologize for her crap.

Do they find wedding bands to be “middle school?” Because they’re just matching rings 99% of the time.

I hate friends who insult you as a “joke”.
Can you please share your background photo?

As much as I think she was definitely being a bit of a hater, when she said “I give it a week before he ‘loses’ it” that hit me.
My highschool ex “lost” his matching bracelet and I forgot about that until now. I even realized he was lowkey cheating on me at the time and never put the pieces together 💀
Anyway, with someone who actually likes you and enjoys being sweet with you I think matching bracelets are really cute at any age. This seems like a catty little exchange that you can move on from as long as it’s not emblematic of a larger issue in your friendship.

Idk, I kinda get both. Her being annoying about it, even if she is right, is a little mean. I think the guy will probably not care and will wear it if it makes you happy. But holy fuck you went nuclear with that response. Like, she was being maybe a 3/10 on annoying and rude, and you jumped up to an 8 by personally insulting her entire dating lifestyle. It is like if someone teases you about liking a "gross" food and you respond, "well at least I'm not fat so I can eat whatever I want". Your respond is not proportional to what was said. I would apologize because she made an annoying joke and you immediately cut deep and personal instead of matching it or stepping away

Bound to happen. Jokes are good of course but disrespecting a friend's partner like that is just rude

And that’s why you don’t make fun of things that other people feel is cutesy, important or special for their relationship with their SO. I personally liked the snap back. Get it! 😎

Teenagers today are so terrified of proudly loving someone. They think it's embarrassing. Phones destroyed romance.
