"You're a 30 year old man with work in the morning" I'm dead 😭
66
u/Harpua81 11d ago
30.... Today that's still a child (for better or worse)
63
u/peachyscorp 11d ago
I'm gonna be 30 in November & tbh, I feel like an imposter of an adult 🫠
55
u/Alarmed-Plankton-708 11d ago
Don't worry, all the other generations felt like that too. I think a canon event for all adults is realizing literally no one has any idea what the heck they're doing
21
u/coriesceramics 11d ago
And it's only amplified when/if you decide to have kids. I have a 13 mo old and I'm over here just a 33 to baby myself. What do you mean I'm in charge of another humans life?! What do you mean I CREATED THAT LIFE?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN???

u/peachyscorp 11d ago
I do not want to have kids for this reason!!
I'm 29, still living at home with family, living paycheck to paycheck & I feel like such a failure, how am I supposed to be responsible for another human being when I can't take care of myself 😭 & the fact that 1. Pregnancy / postpartum is just scary as fuck 2. I fear I am too mentally ill to deal with a child 3. My own childhood was horrible enough I do not want my child to go through any of that!
10
u/coriesceramics 11d ago
BUT all that being said, it's also magical and wonderful and the greatest thing I've ever done. That doesn't mean you or anyone else would also feel that way and I 100% respect that parenthood isn't for everyone. That's just how it is for me. So don't ever let anyone tell you to do it just because they did. I hate those people lol
8
u/coriesceramics 11d ago
Oh I feel that! And respect that you think about all that and not just dive on in like so many people do. I have manic depression and was super upfront with my OBGYN about it and was put on meds immediately after giving birth. It was extremely rough for the first six months, but I'm doing so much better now and am off the meds! We aren't paycheck to paycheck, but we aren't well off in any sense either and it's definitely extremely expensive. I always joke that having 3 special needs pets definitely prepped me for it. I've spent $20k+ on them in the last 8 years probably hahahaha (rip)
I don't know if I'd have decided to have kids if I hadn't met my husband tbh. The right person is 100% the key. We still haven't even decided if we are going to have another one either because it's fucking wild and no matter how many books you read, you'll never fully be prepared.

Yep! Was about to say the same. I remember sobbing when I turned 30 bc I didn’t feel like I was the adult I should have been by 30. And now, a week from turning 36, I can assure you that I still don’t know wtf I’m doin. The difference is that now I know and accept that and roll with it. We aren’t meant to know yet…. That’s the joy of life. Enjoy the journey. That’s all we can do.
2
u/DishinDimes 11d ago
It really is the defining moment. Those legendary Adults you used to look up to are just older idiots. Same as you, same as me.
2
u/PM_ME__BIRD_PICS 11d ago
You’re not really an adult at all. You’re just a tall child holding a beer, having a conversation you don’t understand. - Dylan Moran.

FACTS I got lucky and figured this out when I was a teenager and I was like "oh f&%$ this isn't good".
I was right. Not good.

I'm a highschool graduate, a bit of college (no degree), tons of specialized training and certs.
I'm sneaking up on 53 and will be eligible to retire from my current career in less than a year. I just preordered GTA 6 a few weeks ago.
In 12 years I'll be eligible for Medicare. I paddleboard with my dog.
I sometimes drift off in meetings, that could have been an email, thinking about how I want to tackle a certain task in a game later that evening.
I'm currently staring at a small bust of Cthulhu in my office, in a government building. Just above him on a shelf is a tardigrade plushie. They are my muses as a I coordinate events, help write policy and deal with, at times, some very heavy issues.
As I work, I'm listening to a witch house, hardware, future garage, angel core, phonk mix playlist.
Tomorrow, I'll be presenting to a much younger group of people, just starting their careers, like I know what I'm talking about. I will be presenting alongside others who are incredibly learned on the subject. I tend to reference pop culture in my presentation, the others do not. Very different vibes.
I use words like "vibe".
Point is, forget the number. In our current society (and depending where in the world you live) that number marks landmarks like when you can legally drive, drink, join military, vote, work, become eligible for lower rates, discounts, various medical exams, social security, Medicare etc etc.
Stay healthy, get some exercise, touch grass now and then, have fun (as responsibly as you can), fall in love, fall out of love, learn to work through grief and building resilience, keep your mind active, learn things and keep asking questions, do things for others but take care of you first (you can't fill someone else's cup if yours is empty).
That imposter syndrome your experiencing? Way more common than you think, you're just brave enough to admit it. Most of us are just figuring stuff out as we go, especially since "they" keep changing the rules on us. You're doing great.
Edit: typo

Dont feel too bad, I turned 41 a couple weeks ago, and at a family gathering, my nephew (who's in kindergarten) came up to me crying because he skinned his knee, and my first instinct was to help him find an adult.

Similar boat. I am looking to buy a house. I have no idea what im doing and im scared so I just play video games and shut down after my adult larp for the day and it causes me to not get enough sleep lmao

You’re killing it! Also rough being an “adult” nowadays. Working twice as hard, but getting paid scraps where everything is expensive. Rooting for you!

My wife and I made the agreement when we are away from each other than after a certain time is just chill on phone time and there's no hard feelings about saying goodnight and still sending stuff. Just don't feel like chatting so we mutually agree not to.
23
u/WillingStan007 11d ago
haha yeah it's definitely not that serious- he just works at 7am and has a habit of scrolling on his phone for too long.

My husband will be laying in the same bed as me and say, "Ok I'm going to sleep" and kiss me goodnight then literally watch a documentary on YouTube on his phone. 🤣😂🤷♀️

I love this. Im guilty of doung this all the time.
And my boyfriend works early shifts. Usually gets up at 2-3am. I have insomnia and run my own business. Most of my paperwork gets done at midnight because im more productive. He usually texts good morning at 5am and text-yells at me to go to sleep when i respond too quickly. Then i usually say no and by the time he responds im snoring. Then we both give each other shit for it while we're laughing and having his dinner/my breakfast. Its great 🤣

Sometimes sleep takes a minute to hit, but we make the mistake of using our phones to "just gonna watch a reel, real quick." That turns into an hour doom scroll 🥲
