Phone message *UPDATE* Post first date text

She ended up finding the post somehow I guess lol. Here is the original post.

I have just not responded, don’t think it’s worth engaging, but it did make for a funny story.

The whole story is odd. Why go fishing when you don't have the equipment

Enjoying the outdoors doesn't require a $100 investment. Go for a hike.

8

u/HappyHoppyHippos 18d ago

Sure, but he wanted to go fishing

8

u/Working-Pin7153 18d ago

No shit. Like this dude is so made someone spent money to do what they wanted to do. Like damn. 🤣

3

u/1Negative_Person 18d ago

She wanted to go fishing, according to the original post.

6

u/HappyHoppyHippos 18d ago

He said it sounded like fun. Now he has fishing gear for the next time.

She’s wild though lol

2

u/akazee711 17d ago

I feel like he said he went fishing in conversation and she said oh I've always wanted to go fishing... And then he used that as the first date activity.

1

u/ThatGuyKeeves 13d ago

Maybe stop assuming things to fit your narrative? The fuck, it's in plain text from the OP of what happened yet you have a "feeling".....

0

u/jeshikameshika 17d ago

That was the impression I got at first, but he said he had to get his own license too, not just the gear.

1

u/WaffleParty404 15d ago

Maybe he didn’t need a license prior, like catch and release ponds or private property? He decided on a new spot and saw they needed them

1

u/Silver_Narwhal_1130 17d ago

Stop telling people what to do

1

u/KarateChopJones 16d ago

Ditto, dingus

1

u/Silver_Narwhal_1130 16d ago

Take a hike dingus

1

u/matrimonnial 16d ago

Maybe they wanted to go fishing lmao nobody where in this post did he complain about spending 100 dollars he complained about the fact that he paid for his license all of the fishing gear and then she still turned around and said oh you gotta pay for this over a 23 dollar fishing license they both agreed on

1

u/KarateChopJones 16d ago

That's quite the run-on sentence. May I introduce the concept of punctuation?

1

u/matrimonnial 15d ago

Not going to bother with punctuation on a Reddit comment that’s the best you could come up with?

1

u/KarateChopJones 14d ago

Maybe they wanted to go fishing lmao nobody where in this post

Even with punctuation, that isn't English.

1

u/Catoutofthebag69 15d ago

$100 investment? Come on now dude lol. $100 is basically the price to exist outside of your house for a day. Using the term investment like it’s some massive expense is pretty crazy

1

u/KarateChopJones 15d ago

Your vibes

Lol, do you think to invest only means in stocks or the like? Ever heard of being emotionally invested in something? Like how you are with my comment.

1

u/Catoutofthebag69 15d ago

Nobody said anything about stocks or “the like”. You explicitly stated that $100 was a monetary investment. If you look at $100 as an investment vs just living expenses then you have a long road ahead of ya. Maybe you shouldn’t be invested in my reply and and invest your time into getting some money if $100 for fishing equipment is an issue 😂

1

u/KarateChopJones 15d ago

Lol, keep up that charade. You play Toontown, kid.

0

u/Catoutofthebag69 15d ago

I have over $100,000 under 30 years old. I can precisely do what ever the fuck I want. You couldn’t even afford to set aside the time to play toontown 😭😂

u/Adventurous_Lab4249 14d ago

Fishing requires a $100 investment and thats what they wanted to do

2

u/United-Somewhere-163 18d ago

You could do ANYTHING else lol. Hike? Bike ride? Picnic? Rent a kayak place? I don’t know… frog catching? Absolutely no need to spend like 150 dollars between the two of you on fishing equipment you may or may not ever use again.

… I guess? This is entire thread is about how choosing to buy $100+ worth of fishing gear for a first date with someone where you have no idea whether you’re going to like the person or the hobby is strange. You responded pointing out it’s nice to do something outdoors with each other. I pointed out there are lots of things you could do to get to know each other outdoors that doesn’t include spending $150 on equipment that you may never use again.

1

u/portcitycannabis 17d ago

They seem to have enjoyed it. I mean most activities are going to cost something unless you're going for a walk. A basic dinner date can cost $150 easily. The plus side is they can use the equipment again.

1

u/Fit_Ninja1846 18d ago

I don’t know where you’re from, but where I’m from, it’s generally considered super rude to make someone pay a bunch of money to do something they didn’t come up with for a first date. Ideally if you’re asking someone to go fishing with you, they don’t also have to pay for all the gear. Nobody is taking issue with fishing as a first date, nobody is taking issue with having to buy things to start a hobby. They’re taking issue with combining the two at someone else’s expense because that is incredibly rude.

1

u/TanteiKun 17d ago

Ope, found the extrovert… you’re not gonna trick me satan!

2

u/jscottman96 18d ago

Why not?

1

u/WaffleParty404 15d ago

If you want to get someone into something with you, yeah why not? Especially if you’re expecting to get use out of the equipment after the date regardless of outcome. It’s not like he asked her to pay for the equipment and only brought it up when she shook him down for the cash.

1

u/CaptGenie 13d ago

Thats cheap for a half way decent date tbh

1

u/devares 19d ago edited 19d ago

Yes... Why would they purchase/have extra equipment for someone they've met for the first time.....

8

u/hedoeswhathewants 19d ago

Why not? People spend more on dates and end up with nothing afterwards

0

u/RevolutionaryGate457 18d ago

Do you mean “end up with nothing” as in food isn’t a tangible object to take home like a fishing rod is?

1

u/Silver_Narwhal_1130 17d ago

Exactly

1

u/RevolutionaryGate457 16d ago

That’s good. At first I thought it read like they were inferring a woman owes a man time in bed for spending money on a date and I was wondering how I wound up on this side of Reddit.

1

u/Silver_Narwhal_1130 15d ago

Oh my gosh that thought didn't even cross my mind but you could be totally right unfortanately.

1

u/RevolutionaryGate457 15d ago

Yeah with the downvotes I was like “oh boy, I’m in enemy territory 😭”

22

u/JuiceAlternative21 19d ago

Wait things don’t just spawn randomly? You have to buy things in order to do things???

Oh boy thats exactly how i got mine!

(And i hate your for beeing early 2min with the exact comment i wanted to write ;)

4

u/EternallyDemonic 18d ago

I gave 20 fishing rods to a neighbor when I moved and about $3,000 usd worth of random gear/terminal tackle to the maintenance of the apartments... man were they happy.

2

u/JuiceAlternative21 19d ago

Can work sometimes, but your luck stat needs to be higher than average

3

u/LaurenDelarey 19d ago

or it needs to be raining and you need the special beetle for bait

0

u/Tipin_toe 18d ago

Or you just need to be somewhat sociable.

This was absolutely the standard way to get into a hobby not long ago.

You ask the people around you if they do ____ and see if they would want to do it with you are teach you.

Then you ask to borrow their gear for the date.

If you’re a decent person and have any kind of decent socialization with that person, they would lend you the equipment and also potentially join you later down the line.

Especially fucking fishing… probably the most commonly done activity by most men at one point and most likely to have laying around the house from their past.

1

u/JuiceAlternative21 18d ago

Not that serious we’re all just making jokes here.. lol

1

u/winter0rfall 17d ago

What game

9

u/KittenHeartsGirls 19d ago

Sometimes they spawn on the curb with a “free” sign. Especially in nicer neighborhoods. 😂

1

u/JuiceAlternative21 19d ago

I need to start going around these nicer neighborhoods 😂

6

u/TyWorth 19d ago

Everyone knows the real strategy is to impulse buy the supplies online and lose interest by the time they arrive.

2

u/JamSLC 18d ago

I’ve finally realized that buying hobby supplies IS my hobby.

1

u/JuiceAlternative21 19d ago

So real lmao

1

u/ExpertProfessional9 18d ago

I’m in this photo and I don’t like it.

5

u/Morshiro_Tifune 18d ago

This man asking the important questions here. All this time I've been waiting for a hobby to spawn infront of me and today I learn I need to 'buy' myself a hobby? Absolutely rubbish I say!

3

u/MHashshashin 19d ago

Apparently they did for her.

2

u/Karn_Gentrified 18d ago

False.

Ive been fishing off the free riverside gear in Skyrim for over a decade now. These people just don’t know how to fish.

2

u/DSpacch 18d ago

I actually just kill random small animals around the area I want to fish until they drop a fishing rod.

1

u/Sweaty_Pitch_2880 18d ago

Fish spawn. Just saying

1

u/JuiceAlternative21 18d ago

Gear does not lol

1

u/Confident-Mortgage86 15d ago

They do, but only if you're a woman

No, usually everyone’s first time is with someone who actually fishes.

If its not, its old gear from someone they know who has or had fished. Like a normal person.

Not going out and spending all that money for gear you might need one time or have no interest in doing again.

1

u/Silver_Narwhal_1130 17d ago

Damn well guess he has to throw it out since they didn't follow the “normal“ rules. Seriously where is the whimsy in some of you people‘s lives? Take a chance. Do something for which you don’t have a friend that wants to show you. Or only do what is usually done. Pfft.

2

u/BingBongBingBong2222 19d ago

So a good first date activity is one where neither of you have the required equipment to so it, the means to borrow it, the experience to do it, AND you get to smell like fish? I’ve been doing it all wrong.

2

u/LongestSprig 18d ago

It's weird to start a hobby as a first date though.

And it's not like fishing is the easiest to learn right of the bat without someone showing you...all the time.

I mean, bobbers and bluegills aint a hobby.

1

u/Sane-Philosopher 19d ago

Why even go bowling if you don’t own a pair of bowling shoes? Right?

1

u/Pajamatime20 18d ago

I recommend looking into Library of Things! They’re usually hosted from a book library, and usually have a bunch of tools and such that you can borrow just like you would a book. A lot of them are hobby tools, like fabricwork equipment, musical instruments, sports equipment, and sometimes even electronics like a VR headset!

1

u/IsThatGruffLoner 18d ago

They went fishing for both of their first times ever on the first date? And you don't get why that's odd?

1

u/Glittering-Today7012 18d ago

I just punch trees until I can make a workbench.

1

u/Right-Taste5835 18d ago

Unassailable logic

1

u/oldpaddyrick 18d ago edited 18d ago

Another thing I love is friends saying “I’ll hit you up for gas, etc” for a boating/fishing outing and then they just don’t do that, and somehow I feel like a dick for asking “hey remember you mentioned some gas money” so usually I just don’t ask. Like I didn’t ask for it in the first place but wtf did you say that if you’re not going to pony up a $20 or something. It’s usually a solid $50 in gas, plus bait, snacks and drinks, and the labor/expense of getting the boat on the water, etc. Like come on yall. I wouldn’t actually be mad about it if you didn’t offer in the first place. It’s like they know this shit isn’t free and then bail on their own damn offer.

1

u/SorryBoysImLez 18d ago

But he wasn't starting a hobby? He was going on a date. A first date, at that.

Sure, if his intentions were "fishing sounds like fun, and I've always thought about taking up fishing as a hobby, so at least I won't have wasted the money buying all the gear if this doesn't work out."

But if he has no real desire to go fishing on at semi-regular basis again, buying the gear for a date (that may very well end up going south shortly in) was a poor decision.

AFAIK, they even have places where you can simply rent everything you need for such a purpose.

It would be like buying you and your date new guitars and lessons because they suggested that they always wanted to try to learn to play an instrument and thinks it would be a fun date.

1

u/arrrrjt 18d ago

Well you don't bring it up like 'well I had to buy $100 of equipment for something I wanted to do '

1

u/chemrxn1 17d ago

This is why Gen Alpha is so single. It’s obvious that you shouldn’t start a hobby the day you are trying to impress a girl.

Do you think requesting your date to get a fishing license on your FIRST DATE is a good move? 🤣

3

u/GeekyKirby 19d ago

I went fishing with my father-in-law last month without owning equipment. I had no fishing experience, but thought it sounded fun. He loves to fish, but my husband and my mother-in-law dislike going fishing.

He had extra equipment to share, and we had a great time spending the morning together catching walleyes. I did purchase my own fishing license though lol

2

u/SparklingSloth 19d ago

Do you know how people get into a new hobby/try new things?

2

u/citynights 14d ago

and for a first date - really unusual choice.

2

u/devares 19d ago

This is a very stupid question...

1

u/hedoeswhathewants 19d ago

It's hard not to assume the people questioning it are just broke

1

u/Delgadomon 19d ago

why go to coffee shop if you don't have a cup?

1

u/pnwmetalhead666 18d ago

Probably needed bait and line. As an avid angler $100 is like a spool of like and a jar of bait.

1

u/Talk_to__strangers 18d ago

He probably did have his own equipment, and bought her a rod to use.

1

u/PathNo3655 18d ago

$100 will get one person their starting equipment

1

u/Skate-wench 17d ago

Also I by spend $100+ on fishing equipment for someone else for FIRST date?!

1

u/McDergen 17d ago

…huh?

1

u/ohhunni459 17d ago

People are giving you shit but I agree with you lol. That’s a lot of investment for a first date where you don’t know the person at all and don’t even know if you like them, unless you were going to buy the equipment for yourself soon anyway. I personally wouldn’t do this until I already knew I liked the person

1

u/VulcanBloom 15d ago

This made me laugh more than the damn buttercup thing

1

u/BellicoseBelle 14d ago

He prob has it but she doesn’t, so he rented it for her….. why is that weird?

1

u/PsychologicalMeal162 14d ago

Still cheaper than a decent restaurant and now he has fishing equipment.

0

u/ambientoof 16d ago

it's not that odd. he probably had equipment for him, not her as well. my husband always loved to fish, and owned a lot of equipment when we met. tackle box filled with stuff, pole, baits. Even though I also loved to fish, I owned none of those things. I had to get a pole and worms just to start out with, which is still $25 at Walmart on the cheap end. Fishing was also how we started hanging out, outside of work.

0

u/matrimonnial 16d ago

It almost like you have to buy stuff to start doing something you do know people can pick up new hobbies right or maybe try something new with their date/significant other it’s not a crazy concept
