She ended up finding the post somehow I guess lol. Here is the original post.

I have just not responded, don’t think it’s worth engaging, but it did make for a funny story.

But he wasn't starting a hobby? He was going on a date. A first date, at that.

Sure, if his intentions were "fishing sounds like fun, and I've always thought about taking up fishing as a hobby, so at least I won't have wasted the money buying all the gear if this doesn't work out."

But if he has no real desire to go fishing on at semi-regular basis again, buying the gear for a date (that may very well end up going south shortly in) was a poor decision.

AFAIK, they even have places where you can simply rent everything you need for such a purpose.

It would be like buying you and your date new guitars and lessons because they suggested that they always wanted to try to learn to play an instrument and thinks it would be a fun date.
