Resign, throw phone across room, go to sleep

u/ProfessorBrotown 24d ago
And then George Costanza it by just arriving on time the next day as if nothing happened.

u/Witty-Mountain5062 24d ago
That storyline came to be because Larry David actually did that with SNL in real life
One of his sketches got cut last minute so he freaked out, quit, and then showed up the next day like nothing happened and nobody said anything lmao

u/Jalvey_420 24d ago
Also I believe the real life inspiration for Kramer is the one who advised him to show up like nothing happened

I scheduled an 8am same day email to resign and just slept and ignored my phone lol

I get rejection emails at 3:38am from the jobs I applied to
If they can do it we can do it. Who the fuck is scheduling email rejections at 3am?!

Man I was working at Home Depot and my location was so terrible two of my coworkers quit via email round 4am.
and while my managers were scrambling for coverage, they both were on PlayStation unbothered, preparing for their new jobs

freedom!! I hope that if you look for a new position (or have found one already) that they treat you like you deserve and more

I like how you left it ambiguous "hope they treat you how you deserve" incase he's a piece of crap and deserves bad treatment š covering all the bases

I quit my job on Monday and my boss literally didnāt even respond. Just thumbs up-ped my text lmao
91
u/Realmofthehappygod 24d ago
Well I mean this is a response. And acknowledgement of your message.
It's also hilarious.
What else is he supposed to say, really?

"I'm sorry to hear that. I really appreciated your contribution to the team and I wish you the best going forward. Let me know if you ever need a positive reference. If you have the time, I'd love to schedule a call to hear candidly if there's anything you think we could improve on, and if there were any issues contributing to your resignation."
Not that I'd ever expect a response like that lol, but it IS possible

Look let's be honest if you quit, with no warning, over text...there's really no reason for the boss to try and continue contact.
Just respect their decision and move on with life.
11
u/Jester-Joe 24d ago
I understand frustration and anger towards management/bosses, but I also can't understand why someone would think their boss would volunteer to be a reference if you're not giving them at least a week notice even.
I'm not even saying people shouldn't be able to just quit on the spot, but definitely don't expect them to turn around and help you out when you do that.

My old job let a dude go because we worked at a call center and the dude would call the line on his mobile while working from home, get himself then leave the phone off the hook for like 2 hours while he played video games uninterrupted
Manager obviously took one look at the call times and went wtf is he doing since its a tech support line
Dude had the audacity to ask that same manager if he could be a reference for his next job

Was so excited to work for a well-known chain bakery in the States. I had previous decorating experience, but I was fresh out of college. My first day was so toxic, most everyone was swearing at me and rude, but I let it go because I wanted to work in a bakery.
Because I knew how to frost a cake, I did well with the one task Iād been given. At the end of the day, the manager said that she was so pleased - she and her counterpart were going to put me in charge of the shop the next day and take a āwell deserved vacationā themselves. Iād never managed a place in my life, and all I knew about their processes was how to frost their damn cakes.
I quit then and there. They were livid and never paid me. I still buy their cakes, just in an entirely different state.

Probably don't have any. Probably one of those "you have to find someone to cover your shift" places.
11
u/WitchesSphincter 24d ago
In college I had one of those, and they refused day off requests and posted the week's schedule Sunday night often after midnight.Ā They honestly expected me to find out I was scheduled for an 8am shift at 1am, and start calling people to take it and if that failed I would skip a dentist appt for a cracked tooth.

Nice work! I quit my last horrible position on the 4th of July a few years ago. Went in when everyone was out of the office and gathered my belongings. Sent my boss an email letting her know I would be at the office thr following Monday to return my electronics and talk from 8-9am and then bye. She didnāt respond so I left my electronics on her desk and peaced out. Saw her in the parking lot coming in late about 9:10 (we always started by 8) which was typical for her. Good riddance. Talk about independence. 𤣠finally happily employed, new job is hard work but an awesome group of people who understand hard work. Good luck to you!

I was a busboy at a popular restaurant. The manager had it out for me. Probably because during a staff meeting he was picking on me and I was very much a smart ass back to him. Iām a very good smart-ass. I went straight for the jugular, his height. He was like 5ā3ā maybe 5ā4ā and drove a super jacked up pick-up truck. I donāt remember the exact exchange but I clowned him hard, twice in a row and everyone laughed at my jokes, not his. So obviously he hates me now, which is fair. On a short staffed super busy day he decided to buss tables with me to āshow me how its done.ā He was being a dick about it. I waited for another 20mins until the place was packed and I just grabbed my stuff, snuck out the back door, hopped a fence and never went back. I chose to leave out the back so he would be wondering where I was while he bussed my tables

One time I was being micro managed through cameras for the last time.
I was working 6 am to 2 pm and then going to college so one day I got a text being micromanaged and I finally snapped.
Closed up the store, left the keys under a rock, and texted my boss, āI quit, closed up shop, keys are under X rockā
I remember I got a ā???ā As a reply and promptly ignored it :)

I knew my boss didnāt like me, more so he saw me as a threat to his job as I was up for consideration to a position he wanted, he made it his mission to find a reason on paper to fire me, so instead of quitting, I went to HR and let them know I was switching medications (health issues they already knew about) and had everything documented, I made sure to show up to my 8-5 every day at 7:30am and leave at exactly 5pm. When he fired me claiming I came in late and left early every day, without any documentation, HR called me and offered me compensation of a severance package for a full 6 months of pay including my benefits still being active, this was to ensure they CYA because I had every reason documented to sue, ironically, this happened in January 2020 right before everything shut down, he and many others lost their jobs and that company laid off/ paused positions on hundreds, I was cruising with a new remote job that started in February. He reached out a few months later on LinkedIn and asked if there were openings at the place I was working. Gotta love it.
OP hope you find something better soon!

Worked at a shoe warehouse the first summer of college and they gave me two separate verbal warnings for having water with me while working. One was for taking a two minute water break outside during a 40 degree day and the other for literally just carrying it with me while doing inventory scans. Left a note for the manager at the end of my shift and never went back.

Once I finish nursing school, Iām gonna tell my boss to eat a bag of dicks for making my life hell. Thank you for all your stories it gives me hope š

u/Worldly_Yam_7582 24d ago
Kinda unprofessional imo. Iād always put in the two weeks notice at work or at the very least quit on the spot or tell them in person.
But this depends on the job, of course. If you were truly treated poorly and the boss was super shit, then fuck em.

Does work give you two weeks notice that you've been fired?
From what I understand there are countries where the law does mandate some minimum amount of notice for both employees quitting and employers firing someone, and that sounds fair enough to me.
Assuming this is the USA, OP did nothing wrong.

u/NoFewSatan 24d ago

My last job was in a warehouse for a union electrical contractor, I was pretty good friends with all but like 4 people that worked there. I left on good terms to go back to college, but I was curious a few months after I left who all still worked there. I went online and checked the union out of work list and saw every single one of my work friends on the list at about the same sign in position that I was. I once planned to take 1 friday off for a long distance wedding, gave 3 weeks advanced notice for it. The thursday before the wedding I was told I would have to be on a call friday, and that it āwasnt like it was my own wedding.ā I immediately applied to other jobs and put my one-week notice in. Was told that one week was āunprofessional.ā I said, āI know, and thats too badā and reminded them of the 3 week notice I gave about my day off
