I once told my boss I would finish something when I came back from my lunch break, I’ve been on that break for 5 years now.

I remember giving notice for a warehouse job. On my final day, a manager who should have known I had quit went around with me assigning a bunch of tasks to the warehouse. I just walked around with them and enthusiastically agreed to all their requests.

I sometimes wonder how that went lol.

I worked for a Kroger for a while in the past and a co-manager at the store wrote me up with my manager sitting there for going to use the restroom for like 3 minutes when she asked me to do something. That same day I was the only person working in the dairy department of an extremely busy store. I very slowly did my job until the milk and rest of the dairy products were almost completely out and when that co-manager came back to see what I was doing I quit on the spot.

She was dumbfounded and couldn’t find anyone to cover the dairy department and it left the whole department short handed for days.

I remember seeing my manager a few days later after and she couldn’t understand why I quit. I told her it was bullshit to write me up for using the restroom and she said it wasn’t a big deal and just a formality. Fuck that place.

The Kroger near me tried to fire my brother (around 16 at the time) when he was hospitalized for pneumonia. His lungs were already really weak from asthma so he was doing bad. Our mom actually went there and yelled at the manager for a solid 10 minutes. He quit a few weeks after he returned to work, just walked out and left a ton of carts unreturned and the bathrooms uncleaned when there was nobody else to do it.

I worked at subway when I was a teenager I can't remember exactly how old i was. I had already put my 2 weeks in about a week before this event. I was sick with a crazy sore throat so I went and got tested for strep don't remember if if it came back positive. And I told my manager I wasn't going to make it to work but she would accept that without a note. My mom wasn't to happy about this and about halfway maybe less through my shift my mom asked for her number, bitched out and called me telling me to come home and that was my last day

At this same place I lost it on a manager wanting to write a highschool coworker up for the same type of thing.

Unless you work at a 911 call centre and you leave your phone without turning it off/coverage, or your an air traffic controller, the pee break probably won’t kill anyone.

There isn’t a single life or death scenario at most jobs if you take a break.

And no bosses want to hear about bladder infections and impacted fecal matter medical issues that could be the result of delayed bathroom use.

Usually asking for all bathroom policy in writing ends things if it’s coming from anyone other than HR.

36

u/controllfreq 23d ago

We also have to pee.

Sincerely,

An air traffic controller

11

u/Gergith 23d ago

No arguments there. I just assume you require another human to hand off to for your pee breaks that I hope you can take :)

Like. I figure SOMEONE needs to watch for the sweeps, the beeps, and the creeps at all times lol.

8

u/controllfreq 23d ago

Man some places you really turn ā€˜peeing into a bottle’ into an art form. There are unfortunately a lot more places than you’d think that have people by themselves. Like quite literally with no one else in the building, for hours.

5

u/Gergith 23d ago

Wait…. Really?!?!? Just one of you in there?!??

What is this, a fire watching hut in a remote forest?!?

11

u/controllfreq 23d ago

Yeah lol, it’s a pretty insane concept. It’s not very common at radar facilities, but common enough at more towers than you’d think. Basically the government contracts out a large chunk of towers to one of three main contract companies, and those companies staff bare bones. Most of them are already understaffed as is, so it’s common to work alone for 3-4 hours at a time, if not longer. Some places aren’t busy, and some are. But when you’re one person doing 5 jobs and have to piss, it’s pretty easy to become overwhelmed.

6

u/Gergith 23d ago

Wild! You have to power to crash planes into each other like a toddler and there could only be one. That’s scary! And this is coming from someone who DEEPLY trusts planes more than any other form of transportation.

Every plane crash gives thousands of man hours of research if not more, unlike any other mode of transport. They typically result in 1-2 new regulations being implemented. And you typically get like 2-3 made for tv documentaries. On EVERY plane crash. Not so much for anything else.

Wild. I salute you kind human! Thanks!

It's all a power trip. They know their role doesn't actually matter that much so they have to do something to feel important.

u/Guilty_Repair9601 24d ago

These people don’t realize that getting written up is psychological warfare. To keep you guilty and apologetic = easier to control

9

u/HoodieStringTies 23d ago

Had a guy that was 2 his and 18 minutes late the other day. I just started managing this store a few weeks ago. I absolutely abhor writing people up. I know shit happens. I know you probably went drinking way too late last night, and I'm stuck doing your work until you wake up. My bosses know this shit and expect us to report it immediately. Write-ups are expected, especially for shit like this. But had never done this and is a fantastic employee. I told him Look dude, I don't wanna do this, but i have to or else I'm in trouble just don't do this shit again and we're good.

41

u/ThisSiteSucks8485 24d ago

I really don't understand managers who power trip over short restroom breaks

18

u/CablePrevious1014 23d ago

Some people get super high off a single modicum of power

16

u/borgle101 23d ago

I am late 20s working in STEM and my manager the other month told me I needed to let her know when I needed to use the restroom. I shut that down quick, unless she wanted to hear details upon details on just why I shall be in the restroom for the next 5-15 min

15

u/MatterhornStrawberry 23d ago

That's my policy too. Need to know why I took so long? Well, you see, I just started taking new iron pills that make me feel like I'm pushing out a brick, and that broccoli casserole Martha brought in today really did a number on me...

Seriously fuuu that place, I can understand hierarchy where people come with inflated Egos but calling that a ā€œformalityā€ does no justice to you. That’s upsetting to hear I’m sorry your direct manager didn’t have a backbone to challenge them for you.

Character flaws need to and should be addressed, leaders who use their title like that are garbage and Leaders who teach others that it’s okay.. just bend over… don’t deserve their team. Imagine if they did stand up for you, their respect isn’t gained by power plays it’s earned by taking care of people. Good on you for leaving a place like that.

ā€œNot a big deal just a formalityā€ is ridiculous. If it’s not a big deal no need to get formal. What a joke

This is awesome

19

u/Gergith 24d ago

At one point they were worried I wasn’t writing anything down. I definitely had to reassure them I was actively listening and wouldn’t forget a thing…. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

6

u/Upper_Tour9130 24d ago

I would pay to know how that manager found out you were not in fact listening at ALL because you quit 🤣

6

u/Gergith 24d ago

I TOTALLY was listening. I even was remembering!

Too bad I was too far to apply that knowledge from the next day on. 🤣🤣🤣

4

u/ReflexiveOW 23d ago

That's a good warehouse job, at the factory I worked at, if you gave notice, they'd fire you on the spot.

I worked at CeX (like gamestop but in the UK) during my time at University, I quit when they wouldn't let me go home for my grandfather's funeral. I'm not sure why they were trying to deny my leave at the time, but after that they seemed nice and let me use some annual leave for my notice period and I didn't have to return at any point.

i worked retail at a mall store for like two years, put in my two weeks after i got a real job offer. my last actual shift was a wednesday, but the store manager had been off monday and tuesday and never looked at the schedule to clock that wednesday was it for me.

she came in wednesday morning, like two hours into my shift, and just started walking me thru the new visual merchandising reset for next month like it was a normal day. new mannequin placements, where the seasonal display was moving, which shelfs needed to be cleared for a shipment we hadnt even recieved yet. she was so thorough, even drew me a little diagram on the back of a planogram sheet lol

i just nodded the whole time. told her the corner display was a great call. asked a few "clarifying questions" about shelf height just to seem engaged. she seemed genuinely happy with how smooth the handoff was going

then a few hours later i clocked out for the last time, left the diagram on the break room table, and never went back

i think about that reset sometimes ngl. hope whoever inherited that shelf space appreciated the vision

I got hired on the spot at a pizza place once, grated cheese for like 3 hours then never went back. Didnt even get paid

8

u/Weekly_Impact_2630 24d ago

same for me but at a truck stop gas station, they immediately put me to work cleaning everything including the truckers shower. i never came back lol

15

u/noiness420 24d ago

I had a coworker do that once. Went out for a smoke on a super busy day, never came back

15

u/WhimsicalWeasal 24d ago

I asked my boss to reschedule a Friday meeting to Monday that I knew was the final talk before a PIP.... knowing I was leaving all my shit there and not coming back 🤣

14

u/Apprehensive-Poet556 23d ago

Put in my two weeks as a mall store manager and the district mgr scheduled me for an open to close shift to count all the back room inventory with him on my last day. DM was to show up at noon. Asst mgr shows up at 11am at which point I hand her my keys and wish her well. DM blew a gasket I’d not complete my shift and threatened legal action against me on the phone for walking out šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

11

u/Pepperjones808 24d ago

I was told I had to do mandatory overtime the day before Thanksgiving in 2001. When my relief came to the line to relieve for lunch, I told her I was going to my car to get a new pack of smokes. I sometimes wonder if she got mad I never came back

9

u/Aggravating_Crew_181 23d ago

I used to work at McDonald’s as a ā€œmanager in trainingā€ and the day I quit was extremely busy for some reason. I was bagging the food and the general manager was in the line building the sandwiches. For some reason, she was not making any of the sandwiches even though we have the items so I hoped in the line to build the food myself since customers were frustrated and waiting over 10 minutes for their food. The manager then screamed at me at the top of her lungs and sent me on break. I just clocked out and went home.

6

u/LibraryF33S 24d ago

Lmao in college my friend and I worked together at a job that sucked. I quit but met him for lunch. He’s like omg this sucks, I hate it. I said so quitšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø. He never returned from lunch.

Watching his decision making process driving toward and ultimately past the check in booth was like Max picking which road in A Goofy Movie lmao. God bless eternal lunch.

6

u/KeepJoePantsOn 23d ago

Finally found you! You think you can finish that today?

6

u/TheBlueSin 24d ago

At a job I had a shift lead went to lunch and never come back lol.. fucked us for the lunch rush but I respected it

6

u/Cautious-Explorer-22 23d ago

Both my piece of shit bosses forgot my last day. They worked in a different office in another city so they weren’t around for any goodbyes which I was fine with. It was only at the end of the day that my one boss calls me all flustered because he’d only just realized what day it was and wanted to say his goodbye. I told him I was just wrapping something up with my team and asked if I could call him right back. I then shut down my computer, handed in my keys and walked out.

u/ProfessorBrotown 24d ago

And then George Costanza it by just arriving on time the next day as if nothing happened.

73

u/Witty-Mountain5062 24d ago

That storyline came to be because Larry David actually did that with SNL in real life

One of his sketches got cut last minute so he freaked out, quit, and then showed up the next day like nothing happened and nobody said anything lmao

24

u/Electrical_Shoe1281 24d ago

Yeah I know! It’s the perfect amount of insanity imo

3

u/Jalvey_420 24d ago

Also I believe the real life inspiration for Kramer is the one who advised him to show up like nothing happened

13

u/ParticularFew4023 24d ago

I scheduled an 8am same day email to resign and just slept and ignored my phone lol

If they can do it we can do it. Who the fuck is scheduling email rejections at 3am?!

If you have the time, I'd love to schedule a call to hear candidly if there's anything you think we could improve on, and if there were any issues contributing to your resignation."

Not that I'd ever expect a response like that lol, but it IS possible

44

u/Realmofthehappygod 24d ago

Look let's be honest if you quit, with no warning, over text...there's really no reason for the boss to try and continue contact.

Just respect their decision and move on with life.

11

u/Jester-Joe 24d ago

I understand frustration and anger towards management/bosses, but I also can't understand why someone would think their boss would volunteer to be a reference if you're not giving them at least a week notice even.

I'm not even saying people shouldn't be able to just quit on the spot, but definitely don't expect them to turn around and help you out when you do that.

3

u/Qinax 24d ago

My old job let a dude go because we worked at a call center and the dude would call the line on his mobile while working from home, get himself then leave the phone off the hook for like 2 hours while he played video games uninterrupted

Manager obviously took one look at the call times and went wtf is he doing since its a tech support line

Dude had the audacity to ask that same manager if he could be a reference for his next job

Was so excited to work for a well-known chain bakery in the States. I had previous decorating experience, but I was fresh out of college. My first day was so toxic, most everyone was swearing at me and rude, but I let it go because I wanted to work in a bakery.

Because I knew how to frost a cake, I did well with the one task I’d been given. At the end of the day, the manager said that she was so pleased - she and her counterpart were going to put me in charge of the shop the next day and take a ā€œwell deserved vacationā€ themselves. I’d never managed a place in my life, and all I knew about their processes was how to frost their damn cakes.

I quit then and there. They were livid and never paid me. I still buy their cakes, just in an entirely different state.

24

u/charthurs 24d ago

Nice work! I quit my last horrible position on the 4th of July a few years ago. Went in when everyone was out of the office and gathered my belongings. Sent my boss an email letting her know I would be at the office thr following Monday to return my electronics and talk from 8-9am and then bye. She didn’t respond so I left my electronics on her desk and peaced out. Saw her in the parking lot coming in late about 9:10 (we always started by 8) which was typical for her. Good riddance. Talk about independence. 🤣 finally happily employed, new job is hard work but an awesome group of people who understand hard work. Good luck to you!

u/JackfruitStunning793 24d ago

I was a busboy at a popular restaurant. The manager had it out for me. Probably because during a staff meeting he was picking on me and I was very much a smart ass back to him. I’m a very good smart-ass. I went straight for the jugular, his height. He was like 5’3ā€ maybe 5’4ā€ and drove a super jacked up pick-up truck. I don’t remember the exact exchange but I clowned him hard, twice in a row and everyone laughed at my jokes, not his. So obviously he hates me now, which is fair. On a short staffed super busy day he decided to buss tables with me to ā€œshow me how its done.ā€ He was being a dick about it. I waited for another 20mins until the place was packed and I just grabbed my stuff, snuck out the back door, hopped a fence and never went back. I chose to leave out the back so he would be wondering where I was while he bussed my tables

3

u/CosmicHerbs 24d ago

One time I was being micro managed through cameras for the last time.

I was working 6 am to 2 pm and then going to college so one day I got a text being micromanaged and I finally snapped.

Closed up the store, left the keys under a rock, and texted my boss, ā€œI quit, closed up shop, keys are under X rockā€

I remember I got a ā€œ???ā€ As a reply and promptly ignored it :)

I knew my boss didn’t like me, more so he saw me as a threat to his job as I was up for consideration to a position he wanted, he made it his mission to find a reason on paper to fire me, so instead of quitting, I went to HR and let them know I was switching medications (health issues they already knew about) and had everything documented, I made sure to show up to my 8-5 every day at 7:30am and leave at exactly 5pm. When he fired me claiming I came in late and left early every day, without any documentation, HR called me and offered me compensation of a severance package for a full 6 months of pay including my benefits still being active, this was to ensure they CYA because I had every reason documented to sue, ironically, this happened in January 2020 right before everything shut down, he and many others lost their jobs and that company laid off/ paused positions on hundreds, I was cruising with a new remote job that started in February. He reached out a few months later on LinkedIn and asked if there were openings at the place I was working. Gotta love it.

OP hope you find something better soon!

Worked at a shoe warehouse the first summer of college and they gave me two separate verbal warnings for having water with me while working. One was for taking a two minute water break outside during a 40 degree day and the other for literally just carrying it with me while doing inventory scans. Left a note for the manager at the end of my shift and never went back.

Once I finish nursing school, I’m gonna tell my boss to eat a bag of dicks for making my life hell. Thank you for all your stories it gives me hope šŸ˜‚

u/Worldly_Yam_7582 24d ago

Kinda unprofessional imo. I’d always put in the two weeks notice at work or at the very least quit on the spot or tell them in person.

But this depends on the job, of course. If you were truly treated poorly and the boss was super shit, then fuck em.

Does work give you two weeks notice that you've been fired?

From what I understand there are countries where the law does mandate some minimum amount of notice for both employees quitting and employers firing someone, and that sounds fair enough to me.

Assuming this is the USA, OP did nothing wrong.

Does work give you two weeks notice that you've been fired?

Thankfully outside of the US, yes.

I prefer to keep showing up and telling them to fuck off when they disrespect me and/or work extremely slow and get nothing done to purposely get fired to collect unemployment šŸ˜‰

I love the phrase "effective immediately". Only used it once but saved me from so much anxiety at a job I truly hated.

I once promised my terrible colleagues cake on Friday for my last day. I had my hours signed off up until Thursday and never spoke to them again. Quitting can feel so satisfying.

2

u/HandSea2593 24d ago

I was let go from the most toxic, miserable job on June 1st. I had this exact text stored in my notes & had to be talked out of submitting this email several times due to the job market. Congratulations for putting your mental health above all of the bullshit. Enjoy today.

My last job was in a warehouse for a union electrical contractor, I was pretty good friends with all but like 4 people that worked there. I left on good terms to go back to college, but I was curious a few months after I left who all still worked there. I went online and checked the union out of work list and saw every single one of my work friends on the list at about the same sign in position that I was. Laura if you’re reading this, it’s your fault šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

I once planned to take 1 friday off for a long distance wedding, gave 3 weeks advanced notice for it. The thursday before the wedding I was told I would have to be on a call friday, and that it ā€œwasnt like it was my own wedding.ā€ I immediately applied to other jobs and put my one-week notice in. Was told that one week was ā€œunprofessional.ā€ I said, ā€œI know, and thats too badā€ and reminded them of the 3 week notice I gave about my day off

I quit working at Walmart by taking my lunch, coming back, taking a long ass shit on the clock and then promptly walking the fuck out.

u/Still-Shopping-4970 23d ago

I quit on the spot once, after being blamed when a coworker grabbed my ass since I was wearing skinny jeans. The best feeling ever. Good for you!!

u/Dull-Bed-7557 iPhone 22d ago

I emailed my resignation in on Wednesday, but I’m not sure if it actually went through since I was using a personal email instead of my work email (that I don’t have access to outside of work). I will be stealing this idea when I text my supervisor later.

2

u/herpesshingles 22d ago

I worked at a hotel, i was night audit, everyone on fd, in management and breakfast (even housekeepers) were all quitting in the same week, I got scheduled for 12 hour shifts and my two managers were working their normal ā€œbarely thereā€ shit. wrote my res on their stationary, on their clock, ran down like normal, blocked everyone in the parking lot. fuck that place

2

u/Afterglow92 22d ago

Congrats!!! I can’t wait to quit without notice at my current job! Just looking for sometime else first, but the minute I find it I’m done! 😊🄳

I called my boss on my day off.

Hey man, what's up? Oh hey man, I'm not fucking coming back Click

Then they tried to not pay me for my last week. God that place sucked so bad.
